Hi everyone. Belle bunny is back home but the vet said her kidney test came back very bad – so I’m instructed with injecting her twice a day with fluids. Has anyone experienced this? More blood work is being done this weekend, so hopefully I get more details…
Baby bun had slightly off kidney function in one kidney according to her blood work done last week. to be specific her CREA level in the one kidney was too high. it should be in the range of 53 – 74.3 mmol/l according the paperwork my vet gave me but hers was 90 mmol/l. if i remember correctly, my vet had thought this was due to slight dehydration prior to her tests possibly because she was stressed by the events. the test was done right before her operation (mass removal) and 2 days after she had xrays done. if its due to dehydration then theres a good chance all is back tonormal now. we have to re-check this tomorrow. fingers crossed its back to normal.
maybe thats why you need to give her liquids? dehydrated from the last couple of days events? of course all of this could have nothing to do with your situation… they did have 2 different reasons for vet visits. hopefully you’ll know more after you get the blood work done. its hard to wait isnt it?
big hugs to you both
Oh no, my best to you and Belle will be in my thoughts. The vet said "very bad" but they give you the results to see for yourself? I hope she is O.K. and gets better soon!
No, I have not had to deal with that so far (knock on wood). But I bet Marcy (saveabunny) will have more than enough experience to share with you regarding this. I have seen her having to give fluids to ill bunnies before, but they each had varying illnesses so – I’d like to know the answer too- for continued education. How are you instructed to give fluids – do you have the drip or ???
I am just soooo sorry this is happening. How is she acting right now? I’m sending healing vibes Belle’s way!
I’ve done fluids for bladder sludge but I have never had problems so far with kidneys. Let us know what the vet says. I know this is very stressful.
Oops! I missed this post and I waffled on about kidneys on the other thread! I’ve not had experience of this with bunnies but lots of experience with my people patients and I assume the principle is the same. Like babybunsmum said dehydration=kidney issues and is normally (in people any way) easily fixed with fluids. As I said in the other post, might be a good idea to stay away from foods high in potassium (like bananas) until her kidney function is better as her body wont get rid of the potassium so well. How are you going with the injections? I hate doing them for my bunnies (we had antibiotics though). I found alternating the area helped to not make it too painful, just trying not to poke the needle in exactly the same place each time!
Hope it’s going well!
Thanks for all the responses! Belle’s kidney results were 133 – so way high! She is taking fluids through a syringe (after inserting the needle in her back). She’s eating and drinking normally now and running around all over the place, so fingers crossed the blood work will come back better when we get them done this weekend.
oh dear thats stressful. so glad her behaviour is back to normal! definitely post back when you know more.
Hope everything goes okay with your bunny! I know how stressful it can be when they are sick ![]()
I’m just catching up on this post! Oh I hope Belle’s work goes good this week *fingers crossed*
Huge vibes for Belle, and nose rubs!!
Ah, you’re giving the fluids subcutaneously. Is the 133 Belle’s red blood cell count? Did they do a urinalysis by chance?
Belle went to the vet today to get more blood taken – overall she was much better (temp etc), so we get the blood results on Monday which should show if the kidney issue is better or not. They haven’t done a urinalysis and I confess the last time I got the results from the vet on kidney and white cells I was at work and a bit stressed so my numbers could be off – I’ll be sure to listen more closely this time around! Belle’s still on the subcutaneous fluids — actually much easier to give than it sounds, although it is a two people job in my opinion (one to calm the bunny, the other to inject!) as well as the baytrol (sp?) antibiotics. Anyway, she’s happily shooting out of her room in the morning to try and attack the other bunnies in the house, so I’m v. happy her beeotchiness is back!
*chuckle* I bet you never thought you would be happy to see her heighness back to her beeotchiness huh? Well maybe the vet is going to wait to see about the blood work before proceeding with a urinalysis. You just might want to put that question on your list of things to ask your vet, just so you know the direction they are heading and you know where they are going with the diagnosis and treatment. I am so glad to hear she is doing better!!!
well I’m glad to hear that she’s been more feisty, since a bun with a high amount of beeotchiness, suddenly being docile is scary! I really hope this series of bloodwork will come back with a better result. She’s very lucky to have you taking such good care of her!
Giving meds and fluids via injection is scary at first, but gets much easier as both the people and bunny calm down about it.
It’s a good skill to have, since pretty much anytime a bunny is feeling under the weather the subq fluids are beneficial.
A happy update! Belle’s kidney function test is back to normal (wooo-hoo). Her white blood cell count is still high, so she is staying on the raspberry antibiotics (which fortunately she loves!) for the next two weeks. Thanks for all the feedback over the last week and a bit – really appreciate all the insights!
great news… yay for Belle!
Yay Belle!
Whew! Good news! I’m sending happy healing vibes Belle’s way! Keep us updated on her progress.
I’m so relieved to hear the results were much better!
That’s wonderful news! Yeah Belle!!
