I know I’m going to have to call my vet again (sigh) but the ketoconazole she gave me for Fiver’s ear gunk is not working apparently. The gunk has come back for the third time in as many months.

Anyone have any idea what the next step would be? I don’t see Fiver shaking his ears much, but this can’t be comfy for him. Neither of the other two has any problem with their ears, no dirt, wax…nothing. (Except Pip will scratch her right ear furiously sometimes, but it’s totally clean all the way down.)

        I’m at a loss…again.

Did she do a culture on the gunk? If not, that’s my advice.

Agreed. She should do some kind of test on the gunk to see what it is.

My doggie used to get ear gunk as an allergic reaction- could that be it?

Ketaconazole is an antifungal- and ear infections are usually fungus (yeast) and/or bacterial- so maybe the bacteria has taken over and the ketaconazole is no longer effective?

Yes, she cultured it the first time and it was deemed a yeast infection. I’ve tried to keep him on timothy hay only as a preventative, but we ran out for awhile and I wasn’t able to get more, so he was eating orchard and young oat. I think the orchard may have been what brought it back.

We’re back on the timothy now though. So I’ll probably have to go back for a stronger antifungal. They could all use a trip in for a look see anyway. Mimzy still has his nasal problems and we haven’t isolated the cause yet.

I know how you feel.  This can be so frustrating.   You try and try to get them well and cleared up.  Then sometimes like with this the med doesn’t work anymore.  So frustrating I know.  Then you have to decide what to do.  All so confusing to say the least.
