I normally buy Oxbow hay for my buns. But today, I went to Petsmart to buy food for my dog and cat, it’s a better deal than private pet stores.  I was planning on going to a different pet store to buy hay afterwards.  But there was a big bag (96 ounce) of Kaytee hay on sale for $10. So I figure I would save some money and be lazy by buying the bag.

When I opened the bag, I realized that I paid the price for being lazy. The hay was more brown than green. Didnt smell like hay at all.  And it was mostly thin flakes!!   I gave some to my buns but Pumpkin just peed on it.  I guess they were pissed.  So I had to drive back to Petsmart to return it and eventually drive to the other store to buy Oxbow.  I probably would’ve saved more money in gas if I had bought Oxbow in first place.

And people say animals dont think????????

I guess Pumpkin told you what she thought of that hay! Have you tried the Bink Bunny hay ? It’s great. So easy to just order online and it’s always fresh.

It seems that once a bun takes “quality” hay they dont care for anything else!

Another idea though to help with cost-check your craigslist in the farm area-you may find a local farmer who has timothy hay they sell. We just bought a timothy hay/orchard grass mix that is nice and green and smells just as good as Oxbow. We paid $7 for a 60lb bale!!

Isn’t it the truth? Yes the Kaytee Hay leaves a lot to be desired lately. I give my hay the ‘allergy’ test now…if it doesn’t make me sneeze, it’s only worth lining the litterbox with if I use it at all! Lately, I haven’t been sneezing when I open a Kaytee bag.
I got a bale of bunny blend myself. I was also given a sample of the blue mix hay, which I used as a treat for my bun…. Now Mim won’t eat anything else! (hey, he’s no dummy either!)
