You may have noticed that one of our Forum Leaders, KatnipCrzy, hasn’t been around as much the last couple of months, until recently.  Toward the end of September she had to deal with the very unexpected loss of her adorable bunny Griffin.  I am posting this with her permission because at this time it is still hard for her to create such a difficult post.

This loss, especially because of how unexpected it was was devastating.  - He passed suddenly without any warning and Julie just found him with Schroeder cuddled up next to him.   We know that things like this can happen especially with bunnies, and it’s our nature as caring humans to blame ourselves even when there is nothing more that could be done.  Julie takes amazing care of her furry family and this just hurts as you can imagine.

Schroeder, Griffin’s bonded buddy, seems to be handling it okay now, as he still has Cotton to keep him company even if they are separated.

Griffin was such a precious boy who couldn’t have been loved more.   Hugs, and healing vibes to Julie and her husband.

I’m so shocked and saddened to be reading this. Julie, I’m so very sorry.

***Binky Free beautiful Griffin*** We had the pleasure of seeing him grow up here. I’m always fascinated to see pics of him, there not being many english lops on BB. He will be missed!

Thanks everyone. Losing Griffin was devastating. He showed no signs of being ill and was eating and drinking normally. And to make matters worse my husband was at work (24 hour shift) when I found Griffin.
Schroeder and Cotton are in the large NIC pen with the divider back in place. Cotton is very territorial and I don’t know if she ever will bond with another bunny- but at least they could touch noses if they wanted to. Cotton is such a Diva that as we are dropping her greens into the pen you can hear her growling at the other greens being dropped. But while they are ignoring each other it is obvious it is deliberate and with thought- so they have the company of each other. I can’t bear the thought of getting another bunny again. : (

Oh my gosh, Julie I am so sorry! Griffin was so beautiful, I remember how happy and proud you were to bring him home to your bunny family. His pictures and stories of him never failed to make me smile.
I will miss him very much. I wish I had words to help ease your pain. Please know I am thinking of you. (((((((Hugs)))))))

Your rabbit was absolutely gorgeous, and I can’t even begin to imagine how you must be feeling right now. Losing a member of the family, especially suddenly, must be devastating. We’re all here to support you, KatnipCrzy. Healing vibes to you. And sending lots of binky thoughts to Griffin on the Bridge.

I’m so very sorry to hear about the loss of your beautiful Griffin. It’s so hard to lose such a dear friend. He must have went peacefully, though, all snuggled up with his buddy.

Although I’ve never met him, the loss of a BB bunny really touches my heart. Know that you have my deepest condolences. ***Hugs to you and Shroeder***

I’m still in shock about this. When other members have lost older bunnies, or have had to make the difficult decision to let them go, it’s at least been somewhat expected. I compare this to when Lesley lost Kokanee. They were both so young and healthy and should have been around for 10 more years. When you see a rabbit from a young, young age, rescued from least than ideal conditions, or from less than ideal potential owners, you want the very best for them. And he had the very best best. I wish he could have lived to be a droopy eared old man, and my heart breaks for you. (((HUGS)))

Griffin was such a beautiful boy.
I know we have found ourselves counseling other members on the loss of a younger bunny because part of what we have learned as FL’s is what vulnerable creatures they really are. How many times have we known that a bunny has a genetic issue that is common to their breed, or strained through the over-breeding that led to bunnies being abandoned to rescues or pet shops, where we find them, only to have a mysterious illness or sudden death? From simple heart failure to undiagnosed strains that cannot be detected, we see our beloved little friends taken. It has no cause or fault. It is a fact of life with house bunnies. Griffin was one.
He had a constant beloved companion to snuggle him at the end. He had another friend and parents who gave him the best of care and the most love possible. A bunny’s life is uncertain and filled with fear daily – unless they’re lucky enough to have someone like you, Julie.
I hope your grief is beginning to ease up now. He is watching over you from the bridge, and sending you hugs just like these:

When I first joined at BB, I saw Griffin and I fell in love with him. I think you were on a vacation when I made a post for you asking for more photos of him. Even though I didn’t really get to know him, I was always jealous (a good flattering jealous) of you having such a freaking amazing bun in your life. His face just looks like he is such a character and such an amazing rabbit to have in your life. You can see it in his eyes. I am so very sorry for your loss. I just lost my favorite rabbit I’ve ever seen since joining BB. I am so sorry, and my thoughts are with you and your family. I hope he is up in rabbit heaven with my Bagheera having a heck of a time being stinky binks together. Oh god I am trying not to cry now

Thank you for the kind words everyone- it really helps. It is just so hard to lose them unexpectedly and with no warning. And I think of all the bunnies that live for years in small hutches with hardly any human interaction and it just seems to unfair to lose Griffin.

It’s so hard when we feel like we’ve done everything right, and we still lose our beloved bunnies to something completely unforeseeable and undetectable.
