› FORUM › DIET & CARE › Just noticed a large cut on Thane’s back
It’s never straightforward with Thane! I noticed while petting him that he had a circular ‘incision’ type graze on the middle of his back. Like, the fur all covers it. There’s no blood and it’s a perfect circle. My vet isn’t there right now, so I can’t ask about it. Could this have come from his neuter? I’m just in complete shock, I dunno how it got there. I’m just scared it happened when I wasn’t watching him. He’s not in pain and doesn’t seem upset.
Help? I’m upset something is wrong!
I’ve just thought, could it be mites? I then realised I used see teeny gray specks in his coat and think they were dust!! He’s also been shaking his left ear a lot recently. He has just come back from his neuter last week, I’d imagine a weakened immune system did not help.
hard to say. Check around his habitat for something sharp sticking out that he might have walked under that grazed him. Does it look like bites? Is it large or tiny?
I would make an appt. with the vet for as soon as you can get in to have him seen in case it’s at risk of getting infected. You can put a dab of Neosporin on it now after gently washing it with a tissue to keep it from getting infected first, and call the vet if it gets worse or stays the same.
p.s. that would only help a cut or scrape, not bug bites or mites.
Thanks Pam! It is possible he cut himself, I just have no idea. I will take him to my vet first thing Monday. I have a picture, but can’t upload using my iPhone. He’s eating and drinking fine and he was on Baydril for the last 10days. Fingers crossed it is just a cut though!
At first I thought could be reaction to where he had a needle but you said middle if his back?
So fur is growing now in the spot?
Maybe he’s shedded fur out there and new us growing in. Or it being perfectly round, ringworm? Idk
Edit: I *think* you can open the options on the photo on your phone then email it to a pic sharing site. Like photobucket or to Facebook. Then you can get the HTML code and paste it here in a post.
has he had any vaccinations recently for myxo or RVHD?

That may help. We were gonna have him vaccinated after his neuter, which he is recovering from.
I noticed this on Rigby today too! But Rigby’s is skin colour and i can see like “blood veins” I teared up and freaked out. There’s no vet until Monday, so I’ll have to wait. I’m scared that Lucy might have done it to her, it just looks like too much fur was pulled out. But I’ve never seen her bleeding or anything, so I don’t think it could have been that.
She’s eating, drinking and pooping, so she doesn’t seem to be in pain. I don’t even know how long it’s been there.
I am in the same boat! It’s so frustrating.
looks bit like a healing scab. Like had fur & skin pulled off from a tussle.
The reason I asked about vaccine shots is sometimes it causes a reaction at or near the injection site.
You think? I was freaking out about it. No clue how on earth he got it, unless it happened at the vets last week. It’s not sore on him anyway. Thank you do much for your opinion, I will take him to the vets on Monday anyway, keep you all updated!
Yeah, I do that a lot… Freak out about the buns!
For sure, follow up with your vet. Good luck
To me that looks like a scab but the color it is and the size of it is alarming. We had a guinea pig get a cyst on her back once that size and they had to drain it then we neosporen-ed it and it healed fine. I say this because that slightly reminds me of it but it’s not elevated right?
It’s not elevated at all, no. It appears concave, not even. It is the strangest thing!
It looks like a scab to me. Either fur got pulled out or the circular shape even reminds me of a burn.
It definitely looks like a healing scab — if there was an abscess underneath brewing you may be able to smell it as the scent of the an abscess smells really bad. Has he been around other bunnies where a tuff of fur could have been pulled off? You had mentioned that there were gray flakes— could be just part of the scab flaking off, but if it’s darker — like little black dots, it could be debris from fleas (not the fleas themselves).
Vivian has an allergic reaction to fleas and has gotten two small scabs similar to that before — but closer to her bum. They healed up quickly once we the fleas were taken care of. Her fur is so dense and dark toward the skin, it’s hard to see those little buggers. Note: she’s an indoor only bunny, but this season has been bad around here for fleas and so fleas can come right in on clothes, other animals, etc. The fact that your bunny is white though should make fleas easier to spot, and though they may not stay on her all the time time, the flea dirt (flea poo), they leave behind will be noticeable once you look closer– usually along the spine line.
He was checked for fleas before and has been fine. I’ve never seen anything on him, but I will mention it to the vet on Monday. The only time he could have been near another bunny was when he stayed overnights at the vets for his neuter. I have noticed when he grooms his back, the hair is falling out there. It is definitely a scab, I just have no idea how he got it!! could it be an allergic reaction to an injection he got at the vets?
Thank you so much for taking the time to reply, it’s really helped put my mind at ease.
Is where the scab is closer to his head or his bum. If closer to his head, then it could be where a needle may have went in, but it seem rather big to be a scab from a needle. hmmmm. ???? Keep us updated as to what you vet says on Monday about this mystery mark!
I will do! It’s kinda smack in the middle lol! I thought the same, but again, it’s huge!
I called the vet and they say he had an allergic reaction to his anaesthetic and to keep an eye on it. Would they not have TOLD me this and saved me the upset over the weekend?!
Anyways, I’ve to keep an eye on him. I’ve seen him scratch at it once or twice, but I’m concerned and want him better ASAP. Should I confront the vet about this?
So they were aware of a reaction before they sent him home with you? Or did they say it may be an allergic reaction?
They were aware he had had a reaction, they just never told me! ![]()
