Will spaying my original bunny, Trouble, help with spraying and mounting of the new bunny, Emmie?  By the way, both Trouble and Emmie are sisters, same litter, same birthdate.

Hi Niclole.  For now are you housing them separately?  Spaying both of your rabbits will help with the spraying but the mounting maybe not.  Mounting is typically a behavior of dominance and rabbits sort out who is the “top bun” that way and so some would still occur during the bonding process.  Is there any particular reason you can only spay one?  Female rabbits have an 80% chance of uterine cancer if not spayed.  You may also be able to find a low-cost spay & neuter clinic by you.

Here are some FAQ’s on spaying & neutering:

Here is a tool to help locate a rabbit savvy vet if you don’t have one:

Here are a few things to help you find low cost spaying & neutering:

I performed the search already and here are the results: http://www.neuterspay.org/cgi-bin/webdata_pro.pl

Here is info on the bonding process – especially since they have been apart and check out our Bonding section too:

Hello Nicole 8118, Welcome to Binkybunny!

Could you give us a bit more background on your bunnies? Have they been raised together and always been together, and were just separated for the one to get spayed? Is the other spayed?

I would recommend not putting them back together until Trouble has healed from her spay, sometimes females have more trouble recovering, so you’ll want to not stress out Trouble too much until she is feeling better from the spay. I’d probably wait a couple weeks until trying to bond them.

Also, be very careful when putting them back together – even if they were getting along well enough before the spay without fighting, the time apart may have broken the bond and they may need to be re-bonded.

Let us know if you have any more questions – and if you can give us a bit more information we can probably give you some better advice!

Yes, I am housing them in separate cages, across the room from each other.  I had just taken Trouble in for her first vet visit and she has front teeth problems and along with the spaying, her front teeth will be drilled down also.  Her bill will be about $300.00.  I figured I would let Trouble heal first then take Emmie a couple weeks later.  Trouble was the one and only bunny we had before Saturday.  She requires a lot of attention.  I think she will milk her recovery.  Right now we are showing Trouble extra love and attention. Of course she is more then happy to take it all in.  Emmie on the other hand isnt aggressive or attention hungry.  Currently we are allowing out together for 15-20 minutes, put one bunny in their cage for an hour and then switch.  I hope I am doing this right!  Meanwhile, Emmie is a lover and seems to be enjoying her hour being pet on our laps and exploring everywhere in her new house! She likes the kitchen unlike Trouble.

It sounds like you have a very good plan in place That is too bad about Trouble’s teeth problems, but it is very good that you got that taken care of because tooth problems can cause a lot of problems for a bunny if not addressed. That is so cute that Trouble is going to milk her recovery – maybe she figures she’ll get some extra treats out of it! I’d recommend keeping them both separate for the most part until both have healed, the spay incision is very delicate while it is healing and so you don’t want the bunny to aggravate the area. The switching the cages is a good idea, to help them get used to each others scents, but be very careful when putting them together so that a fight doesn’t break out before they are both feeling 100% after the spaying.

Let us know how Trouble does with her recovery!

Trouble and Emmie were not raised together. They were born on July 27, 2008. Emmie was adopted by my cousin when she was only 8 weeks old. I adopted Trouble on November 15th. Yesterday Emmie moved in. They have been apart for 5 months now.
