I was just walking down the hall at work and a woman was coming towards me so I naturally stepped to the right side of the hallway to pass her. I’ve noticed that most people do this to avoid collisions and I am sure that the reason we all choose to go to the right side is because that’s what we do when we are driving. That made me wonder though, do people in other countries where they drive on the left side of the road naturally go left when walking?
Not sure why I got to thinking about this one but now it’s going to bug me until I find out!
I think so. When I was in Australia a couple years ago I noticed they would pass on the left. It got us all screwed up!
the worst thing is that annoying little dance when each person tries to go the same way and they continue to flip flop back and forth.
lol. i think so. when i walk my dog he’s always on my left side and so when we pass people i like to pass on the left. there’s more room to pass because the dog doesn’t mind stepping off of the sidewalk – especially in the winter or on soggy days it’s more polite to make the dog go ‘off-roading’. plus he has a tendancy to excitedly jump up on people if they look at him and not everyone appreciates this so it’s just easier to keep him furthest away from whoever we’re passing. anyways… it screws people up that i go to the left so i tend to shift there far in advance of approaching people. this one time a university kid would not move to his left. he stopped right infront of us and stood his ground with a verrry irritated look on his face. so… i passed him on the right and let bogart jump on him & knock him into the snow bank. lol.
Oh I know!!! Isn’t that annoying?
or you meet a left-handed person like me, and I ‘naturally’ go the wrong way…lol.
Hmm I think its annoying when people don’t move and you end up being the one that has
to move every single time someone is passing by on a small sidewalk or whatever. I just get to the
point where its like, if YOU dont move then I guess you’re bumping into me. (I can only be nice
so many times. haha) What really annoys me though are people who cross streets without looking
both ways…it’s like those people have some sort of confidence that won’t get hit by a car. SAFETY FIRST!
Floppy, omg I hear you!!!
I am ALWAYS the one to move for people. So lately, I’ve stopped. Being on a university campus, with snobby university girls, they don’t move. I was tired of succumbing to their confident walking so I stopped moving. I’ve had quite a few bad collisions (shoulder/side) with several girls but tough @(#* for them! I’m not moving anymore! LOL.
there are some dumb people out there I am riding my 3 wheel bike on side walk these 3 boys are takinjg up all the sidewalk I went to the right but refuse to leave the sidewalk and stupid ()& kids wouln’dt move so I about ran over 1 of them. stupid idiots.
then the olympic rowing team was jogging on the sidewalk I always take my walks on and had my dog with me. they would NOT MOVE and ran into the dogs leash and tripped herself and another tiem on my bike and she had plenty of room on the left of the sidewalk she ran smack into my bike lol. those olympic team people I deduced were sheer idiots.
LOL !! those stories are sooo funny!!
I find the best way when people won’t move out of your way and your not going to move is to confidently stare “through them” look at their face, but no eye contact, no smile, and don’t drop your head (submissive); Then walk, and they’ll move. If it looks like the aren’t going to put a mean face on, clench your lips and raise one eyebrow heheh I too have lots of experience in University hallways where everyone is pushy so that’s what I figured out.
LL- do you find that people on your campus always stop and chat in doorways/intersections during class breaks? Like when you have no time and it’s flooded with people and they are causing a catastophe??? I finallly (probably in my fourth year) got fed up and I’d just push their backpacks to move them out of the way!! LIke grrr…What are you doing> ? That’s like stopping in the interesection and looking for your cellphone!!
LOLOL Krals space your not kidding. I feel like i’m always going the wrong way. I’m a lefty too!!!
Kokanee – yes, you are SO right…
It’s so funny that walking on the sidewalk can be such a power struggle. The streets here are usually busy, people running to get to a bus, a cab, or need to walk into or out of a shop. I just dodge and weave.
It just struck me this morning, that here in Texas, at least in smaller towns and cities, people don’t walk on sidewalks much. You drive everywhere, park, get out and go in. Unless you’re in a mall or something like that, there are few places where people just walk places, everything’s too spread out. It’s funny to imagine living in a city.
My current pet peeve is how people keep cellphones stuck in their ears and go off into their own little world and lose track of where they are. These are the ones I see wandering aimlessly out into traffic, stepping in front of your car, just paying no attention to their surroundings. You have to really watch out for them and stay out of their way. The bad part is I drive a nasty 15 mile stretch of interstate everyday to work, and these same people are trying to drive and talk. They weave across the lanes, slow down and hit the gas without warning, have no hand to turn on the turn signals and tend to realize they’re about to miss their exit and swoop across all four lanes of traffic without warning, as if making a right hand turn. Geez, and all at 80mph.
I step to the left as we drive our cars on the left. 🙂
lol lisa makes sense tho when you are used to driving on the left. ok so stare thru people and they will move ok. sound like a good idea. lookin like you have somewhere to go and don’t see them or something. good thing it works i will try it sometime. malls I hardly go what i cotton doing he is darting all ove rhis literbox lol. guess he is happy. oh he just did a bunny flop and rolled on his back no whe is up covered in litter there he goes again wow another bunny flop lol he is having fun lol geesh never know what gets into them sometimes.
