So I know today was Canada Day (for our Canadian friends) and July 4th will soon be upon all of us in the US. Did anyone do anything fun or is planning to do anything fun?

I have to work the city’s celebration, which is on July 3. We aren’t big on fireworks though, so we thought we’d go hiking on the 4th. Plus I really don’t want to sit around at home doing nothing that day. I need to be busy doing something. It’s going to be a hard day for me otherwise. Probably still will be.

Willow doesn’t need to be dried. It’s just very practical to dry for use when there’s no fresh willow.

Effi has had a happy day. Semi-long hike in a beautiful nature preserve. The previcox is working wonders. She also gets a joint supplement and sweet potato stew with chicken liver and turmeric.

I missed the whole white rabbit white rabbit white rabbit yesterday, but at least I saw Sarah’s Buttercup on Instagram so that must count, surely?

Jersey, I know, it’s hard to believe. Everything from her final days is still fresh in my mine. I’ve been having flashbacks for the last week that have been haunting me. I don’t think she would have ever wanted to go hiking in a state park like the one we’re planning to go to, but I do think it will be nice to get my mind off things. Hehe, she never was a very athletic dog. We’d take her for walks around the neighborhood and she would beg to be picked up when she got tired, even when she was young.

LBJ10, a walk in the state park sounds like a wonderful way to spend the day, taking in nature and enjoying the sunshine I know when Bandit passed away that I rang work and told them I wouldn’t be in the next day. The next morning came around, I hadn’t slept but I rushed to work because I couldn’t bear to sit in the lounge room looking at all of his things and just remembering all day. It’s good to have distractions

Still sick, finally went to the doc this morning. Apparently my lungs must sound worse than they feel because he’s given me the whole week off work if I want it. I was expecting to be covered for today and maybe tomorrow. Thank goodness I got access to the Alpha of the Cattails game the other day, that will at least give me something to do when I don’t have the energy to do anything else.

Did I say kitten? No, that can’t be right…

We only just got confirmation today, we are going to be getting a kitten! Before you get too excited, we have a 6 month wait which is going to drive me crazy I anticipated getting our first cat from a rescue, but hubby came to me just over a week ago and suggested/offered to get my dream cat for my birthday/Christmas. How could I say no?! We just got approval from our rental agent today though I already met the breeder and some of her cats yesterday. Dear, sweet Vovo who you can see in the July pics thread is the potential father. So we have to wait for that whole process, did you know cats are pregnant for just over 2 months!! It seems like forever compared to bunnies. So then the kitten will be 12-13 weeks when we get to bring (hopefully) him home.

I anticipate an epic, 6 month long naming thread, lol.

I’ve decided to go home to my family house next week to avoid the 12th of July parades here, I live in an area where there can be a lot of trouble and dont want to feel stuck inside for the whole day.
So without thinking too much I decided it, and then remembered Peep and Yumi arent bonded, Peep has never traveled for more than an hour and the trip home is around 4(depends on traffic and connections)

I currently only have a single carrier to transport them, as I left my second one in my family house, but Im thinking now it might be an idea to leave them together?
Yumi travels a lot, but needs something to snuggle when she travels or she does the horrible “wild animal” thing where they cower in the back of the cage. It’s awful. I’m a bit hopeful they will just cuddle each other…

A little part of me misses being just able to get up and go, without having to think of having to bring food and rabbits and the fact i have to reorganise the rabbit room at home to accomadate two singles instead of a pair.

On a related note, my father has a fear of rabbits, but a complete phobia of REWs. I have yet to tell him about Peep…

Maybe the single carrier will help them bond a bit more, a stressful experience? Of course we’d prefer the stress of the ride to be the ticket, not the stress of being snuggled together! Fingers crossed for you. Also, good luck with your dad! I’ve met so many people who can’t deal with the REW situation. Not even in a malicious way – they’re just totally weirded out. :] Hopefully he’ll come around.

I’ve been super busy lately. Missing catching up on news here. Work has been pretty busy and I have some summer visitors. Which, while great, seemed to make Olaf a little standoffish. He is fine but just seems more distant. The summer heat hasn’t helped. I’ve been sitting on the floor with him a lot to keep things close and bonded. Hoping he comes around soon.

Dface, you just have to be 200% that they will be stressed for the 4 hours and not get used to the situation and then start bickering / fighting, you reeeeally don’t want a fight on your hands in a carrier when you’re driving.

FYI when i bought Z&H back from the bonders when they were, lets say, 90% on their way to being bonded, i was advised to bring them home in 2 separate carriers, just in case….

Pink- Yumi is terrible for doing that when there are strangers around, she’s really creepy and sits and stares at them for hours..
My dad gained the phobia from actually being attacked by a REW as a child (he still has scars from it on the back of his legs)

VB- I wont be driving, its bus, train, walk, bus/train, car/walk. So I think the longest they have to be quiet is just over 2 hours. Main concern is attempting to lug two carriers around, Im trying to get boyfriend to come with me, as the rail service are sometimes funny about 1 pet to a person rule.

I am very much stressed by the decision- the day I got Peep they shared a carrier for an hour and a bit, so I kinda hope the constant shuffling about will keep them quiet, but not overly stressed. I hate this trip a lot D:

TM- Theres been people out marching every day so far since last Thursday. Its ridiculous. Im hoping to be out of here before the `11th and not back til after the 13th, and just avoid as much of it as I can. None of my friends stay in the city for it, they all find it really uncomfortable. Plus I’d not leave Yumi anywhere there’s a lot of noise (she panics if it rains too hard somedays) Plus my fire alarm occasionally sets itself off (theres a fault in the wire due to a leak from the shower)

Re the travelling, I have a small dog crate, which came with a divider. In that, they could nip, but not get into a full on fight, or snuggle side by side for comfort?

I was having some sort of dream with driving a car up a slippery hill, and a cat magician, and a present that wouldn’t wrap up. I don’t know.

GJ-ohh that might be worth looking into ! When I had Samp, I used to bring wet veggies and a waterbowl and they got them on the train, or if I missed one of the connections and had to stay in a station for a bit, although Yumi never took any-Samp was a very brave little traveller!
Its only a 2 and half hour trip if I had a car..grrr

Bam- Not as much anymore, but there is always a feeling that there might be- given the history of Northern Ireland the march is seen as a symbol of hate and triumphalism against Catholics, but it’s still allowed to go through catholic areas.
I’ve been jeered because my accent identifies me as from the South, and I’ve been told that I shouldn’t walk down certain roads alone either, which leads to a kind of oppressive feel to the place.

To be clear the people who were jeering aren’t actually representatives of the normal people up here-even Protestants dislike the parades now. Its just idiots who jump on the back of something and imbue it with their own racism and hatred.

My eldest has just got his results for his first year of university, studying physics. He got 84%

He is autistic, and was bullied out of school for being different, and was well behind his peers 5 years ago. I home-schooled, so I think I can take a small share of the credit

I had forgotten today was July 4th. I did go hiking with my dog, but she nearly passed out from the heat, so I cut the hike short and just went home. No fireworks, I hear them often enough throughout the year, don’t need to hear them tonight.

Have also just been told today that I’m getting evicted when my house gets signed over to the new owners.
They’ve not told me when it’s all being signed, but it’s before the 20th of this month, originally they wanted me gone by the end of this week, which I managed to argue my way out of that…a huge headache I didn’t want in the middle of doing a masters project.

Bam- it was indeed, I finally was rid of them and everything! This house has been nothing but a torment for the past year..!
The notice is a bit of a pain because I’ve so much to move back-rabbit pens and cages and litter trays and toys..take up so much space!

I have a meeting with my supervisors on Thursday, so I want to talk about attempting to work from back home, and only coming up every fortnight for meetings.
I’d been hoping to use some of the colleges computers adapted for this course, but I think I’ll just try and modify my project a bit instead.

Oh dear, it’s like World War III here. Thankfully, none of our immediate neighbors are blowing things up. Poor Wooly, it probably thought the world was ending! They are gone now. Tonight he seems to be doing OK. I’m sure he can hear it, but it’s far enough away that he isn’t freaked out by it. Dface that sucks We’ve been very lucky in our current rental that we’re just about to be signed on for a third year, where previously we had to move after just over a year in both previous places. I’m glad you managed to secure the extra time, at least here, 1 week is not legal notification for moving out. I think you have to be given about 1 month notice.

Question. Need some suggestions please…
I am willow leaf drying for winter stockage. I cut branches from trees and transport home. As buns don’t eat the branches and they would take up precious storage space AND the stalks take ages to dry, I remove the leaves from branches before drying, which in this weather takes TWO days. Soooo much faster than dandelion leaves ! and then i store in resealable Ikea food bags.

Actually, sliding fingers UP the branch rather than down makes the leaves fall away. HOWEVER its still a loooong old process as each branch has many sub-branches…. and there are maaaaany sub and sub-sub-branches!

Does anybody have another method to make life easier?
Its “willow growing time” and i can cut looooads…

Q8, I think they did sth similar in Romania way back when. The national temperature was determined in Bukarest and it never fell under 4 degrees C, because below 4 degrees there was a law guaranteeing heating in apartment buildings. Conveniently, and almost miraculously, during all of Ceausescu’s reign the temp never fell below 4! (This might be a myth though, or it might not.)

Not a myth, Bam. I was a child there during that era. My grandparents and brother and I lived in a smaller town near the sea, but winters were always ‘au naturel’ – no reliable heating via hot water from the state. We survived by burning anything we could in our gigantic cast iron stove that my grandparents selflessly placed in the room my brother and I shared. They made do with the bit of warmth that trickled through to the room next to ours.

I’ve been noticing how many bunny instas are out there! It’s insane! One thing that has been bothering me is people who seem to only care about making their bunny look cute or cuddly and seeming to neglect the bunny’s proper care. People keeping their bunnies on their backs for cute photos, holding the bunny high off the ground with one hand around the midsection, baby bunnies getting a small palmful of pellets a day, and things like that. I know I’ve been a bun parent for only a month and a half, but it bothers me so much I sometimes scream at phone. It makes me question if these people have read anything about bunnies before getting them. One of the biggest ones is a rabbitry in NJ. They repost their customers’ photos, and their customers are doing the dumbest things with the bunnies! Do they educate their customers at all? Sorry to rant, it just bothered me, and my husband is sick of me complaining to his about it. lol

AandB, it really can cut through your heart, seeing stuff like that! I follow quite a few bunny accounts but I try to choose with some degree of care. I often see people try to inform others about proper rabbit care though. How to lift a bunny, what to feed, not to place buns on their backs etc.

lol, ok Just checking Yes, that’s the other things. I may get all this great cat stuff, and then the sweet little kitten might hate it alll!! 

Regarding the willow branches, I know you said they take forever to dry, but drying the leaves on the branches would make them super easy to remove from the branches, they break off at a much lighter touch.

Q8, I can’t believe (well I can, but it would be nice not to) that that sort of thing regarding the temperature still happens.

Regarding instagram, I try to pick who I follow so carefully, and definitely avoid accounts where I do see a hold of incorrect holding for photos etc.

As, surely a kitten would love practically all toys? I remember it took quite a while for Effi to become interested in balls though, so maybe there are toys they need to “grow into”.

I bought my rabbits a Y shaped cat tunnel today. It came complete with a toy hanging in the middle. Terry chewed it off in 10 seconds. Later I found it relocated out of the tunnel!

On a different note what is everyone’s favourite baked goods? I’m not a huge baker because I don’t eat much in the way of sweets (I do actually like baking though) but I have volunteered to host an event for the RSPCA Cupcake day sale in August. So I’m after more ideas to try rather than just cupcakes. What would catch your eye at a bake sale?

Also does anyone have any pupcake recipes? Seeing as this is for an animal shelter I feel I need to sell something for the furry friends too!

The balloons and posters and stuff just arrived in the post. The sale isn’t until August, so I am working hard to resist not blowing up a balloon now!

Im sure pinterest has zillions of inpiration photos too.
Years ago I saw a photo of a big fake potted plant that had the base containing a hidden litter box.

Bianca is that the blue one from Kmart? I’ve been eyeing that off for a while, haha. The previous tunnel I had with Bandit also came with one of those dangly bits, I think it lasted about as long as yours, didn’t bother me, I just took it away

Almost all baked goods are my favourite, lol. Scones, cupcakes, caramel slice, chocolate chip biscuits, muffins, brownies, banana bread, carrot cake, and so on I’ve no idea on pupcakes though I’m sure there’s plenty of sites for recipes online.

Yes, I’ve been seeing so many different litter box ideas my mind is overwhelmed I’ve seen that pot plant one too. I was thinking a small cupboard would be good because then I could have some storage in one side for the scoop etc. Plus, there’s plenty of cheap second hand cupboards floating around that it wouldn’t be the end of the world if I broke it while modifying it

Also, regarding toys. I’m told that Somalis are very busy cats, so I need to have all the toys to keep it distracted from the very interesting bunnies and parrot

It’s a good example of why not to put intact bucks together, isn’t it. The dangy bits won’t last long.

Do you have back porch area or verandah? Down the track, it would be great to enclose with shadecloth (and something to stop that being torn). Then it could become a cat run, bun run &, bird flight zone. Not all at same time, obviously. 

ETA: Bianca, for pup cakes, couldn’t you just soak some kibble until it’s pulp like then press into moulds. Either pop in fridge or dry a little in low oven. Then just sprinkle something on top for contrast. Liver flakes? 

You could even stick a bite-sized chewy type treat inside the kibble cake.

I only managed to take Hunter out after dark so I went to nearby park area and let him run off leash. Since the light was so dim, I decided to join him aaand I discovered my pelvic floor muscles need some strengthening.
Nothing too bad, but I need to do this anyway. Im not getting any younger!

There was nothing like the exhilaration I felt when I was sprinting as a kid. I haven’t had that feeling for so so long. I think it was the last time I was truly fit. Once puberty hit, i just felt like a big ol’ slug.

V, is bathroom or laundy dark enough that you could hang branches in there for a few days? A sheet under to collect fallen leaves?

I tend use big cardboard boxes in the shed for willow. I cut pieces of branch short enough they can stand up in the box. Many of the leaves fall to the bottom.

We do have a back verandah, it would be nice to have a catio/condo area out there. Better for a house you own than one you rent though.

I always loved running Probably not so good at it anymore, haha. I consider myself physically fit in the way of strength since I lift and pull things at work all day, but I doubt I have stamina for running.

Vienna, maybe you could half dry the branches before removing the leaves? I don’t know. The leaves might fall off easier but not be so brittle. You can buy rose de-thorning tools, I imagine it would work for leaf removal.

I am vegan myself, so everything will be vegan and I’ll let the vegan community know. I just won’t advertise it as all vegan because for some reason that puts people off.

I’m thinking I might make one fancy large cake too, and see if I can do a raffle for it.

Az, I know… spending the $$ when renting is a bit of a waste. Though I do like the challenge of coming up with removable and portable (i.e. take it with you when you go) solutions for rentals.

One side of my house is a shadecloth enclosed area. Ive not let the rabbits have run of it as I think there is rat bait that go into the soil and I don’t want to risk it. Plus it is over run with plants. When I first moved in, I thought about making ramps down from the window of the bunny room to this area outside. 

@Vienna, you’ll have happy crunching bunnies in no time. I REALLY need try grab the last of the willow around here. The weeping has already changed colour and is dropping the leaves. The other type is a bit later with this. But the only tree I can get to now is near a busy road bridge and lots of pigeons roost there and the tree gets poo-bombed.

I don’t know. Studies have shown that if vegetarian dishes are mixed through the regular menu at a restaurant there will be 50% more sales than if it’s in a separate vegetarian menu.

My local bakery recently changed their vegetarian pasties to vegan. They has so many people ask “can I still eat it?” People seem to genuinely think if something doesn’t contain an animal product they can eat it.. literally the only change to the pastie was the milk used on the pastry.

I’ve had conversations with people who go “I can’t eat it, it’s vegan” then when I ask them why they reply “because it’s vegan” and when I ask them why it being vegan makes it inedible, they reply “it’s vegan.” I resist replying sarcastically because that won’t help anyone, but it does make me a little sad that some people think they can’t eat a product for the sole reason being it is vegan.

I also don’t want to use this event to push veganism onto people, it isn’t about that. If people (apart from the vegan community) see that it’s vegan they will see it is a preachy vegan event and probably not come. So I’m just advertising it as a bake sale, but everything will be vegan. And hopefully some good gluten free options. I’ve just started to not tolerate gluten well so I’m not very good at gluten free baking yet!

If you don’t have a good choccy cake recipe, this one is good. Ive copied it from another thread I’d posted it in. Can put measures in imperial if you prefer.

This is a vegan chocolate cake recipe Ive made before. It makes a dark, moist, yummy cake! It’s easy recipe too.
This is for 20cm tin but you can make cupcakes instead if you wish. They work great.
Bakes in a 180C oven for 45 mins. Cupcakes would only take about 25-30 minute, depending on your oven.

You’ll need:
200g plain flour
200g sugar ( I use caster sugar for baking if using white sugar)
4 Tablespoons cocoa
1 teaspoon bicarb soda (baking soda)
1/2 (half!) teaspoon salt
5 Tablespoons vegetable oil (I use sunflower oil)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract or essence
1 teaspoon white vinegar (I used apple cider vinegar once and it was fine).
250mls of water

Sift your flour, sugar, cocoa, salt and bicarb soda together. Then just add all the liquid ingredients and mix until it’s a smooth batter.
Pour into the tin or into cupcake cases. I grease the tin and also line it with baking paper. Makes taking the cake out easier.
Bake 45 minutes in 180C oven. Less for cupcakes!
This is nice on it’s own, but you could top it with your favourite icing / frosting. I made some using a vegan margarine, icing sugar (powdered sugar) and cocoa. It would be equally nice with just a vanilla version of that.

I think it would work well using an alternative milk also, if prefer. It would possibly make the cake lighter in colour. It is very dark just using water but Im good with that. Makes it seem more chocolatey.

Speaking of meat, I’ve been looking into raw feeding for future kitty. While I was at the supermarket today I took down the prices of things I would use and then spent some time doing an approximate cost based on how much I would feed each day etc etc. Long story short, it’s cheaper for me to feed a balanced raw diet (and better for the kitty too) than it is to buy almost any tinned cat food (except for the really cheap stuff like whiskas in the big bulk cans etc). The only issue is, I need freezer space. But the cost of a new fridge/freezer would be offset in only 1 year by the savings made from feeding raw vs a premium tinned food Get cat, buy a new fridge/freezer for cat. Makes sense, lol.

I thought about a separate chest freezer, trouble is we do need the fridge space as well since we have the tiniest fridge/freezer ever. I think it’s about 230 litres total. If we upgraded to a fridge/freezer top/bottom combo of about 450 litres, we’d gain almost 3 times as much freezer space which might be enough. Do you mean one of the upright side by side fridge/freezers? The main trouble with those is that they are more expensive again than the top/bottom combos, and they are too wide for most rental properties. At least with a top/bottom combo we have a chance of fitting it into most rentals if/when we have to move again.

Effi’s (dog) tests for Lyme disease and anaplasmosis came back today. The levels of anaplasma were so high the vet has put her on antibiotics. It would be so great if it helped, anaplasmosis is known to cause joint inflammation and pain.

Here she is, she’d just taken a nice bath in a stream so her legs look extra skinny.

I got an extra freezer to store raw dog food in, (I had to buy like 50 kilos at a time), then they stopped selling that particular brand of raw dog food, so I didn’t need it for dog food. Somehow it magically stays full anyway. I don’t know how I managed with only one freezer before, because now both are always full. I bet if I got a 3rd one I’d fill that one too in no time. Sens morale: It’s no use getting an extra freezer, there’s still never enough space =D

Wow 50kg, lol. If I can get the organ meats in measured amounts from a butcher instead of just 1kg packs at supermarkets, I should be able to get away with only having about 4kg in the freezer at a time which should last about 4 weeks. I’ve hit the willow jackpot – whilst at a warehouse earlier I noticed 2 willow tress in their forecourt…. asking if I could take “some” branches, they guy looked bemused and said ‘you can take the whole tree if ya like”….. so I almost did – (slight exaggeration) – filled the car up and spent the hour drive back home scratching and killing ants who had made it from the back seat to my arms !! LOL

My miniscule garden is now a bed of willow branches – trying the “dry-before-you-strip” method… I shall try D+6hrs, D+24hrs and D+48hrs…
And then I go back next week for more !!!!

MY BOYFRIEND IS MOVING!!! I’M SO FREAKING HAPPY AND EXCITED! We were together about six months when I got promoted to a new area a few hours drive from him, and we’ve been long distance ever since (this was over a year ago), but he’s taking a new job and is moving about 45 minutes away from me. I’m so happy. The last six months of him trying to find a job have been so stressful on our relationship, and I’m just so proud of him and relieved and happy. It’s going to be hard on him being further from his family, and we haven’t sorted out all the details just yet, but it’s amazing to think in a few weeks we’ll be able to go on dates and hang out without having to book holiday days off work and make a huge trek across the country. We’re not telling anyone yet until it’s all official but I’M BURSTING WITH EXCITEMENT!!!

For clarification; we both work the same job in the same company and we both work shifts, so we don’t have weekends off or anything like that, which made a seven hour round seem like such a huge distance. So, judging by the stinky mess Luna left in the litter tray, I may have overdone it on the treats yesterday I was making a big batch of food for Dory, so I took a tiny piece of capsicum (the size of my little fingernail) and gave it to each of the bunnies. Apollo snubbed it so Luna had his piece too. Then I also gave them a similarly small piece of snow pea each, again Apollo snubbed it so Luna reaped the rewards. I skipped their greens last night to encourage more hay, but it doesn’t seem to have mattered Poor Luna butt. Needless to say, I already cleaned out their tray because it was STINKY! lol. I think certain bunnies will be getting probiotic on their veg tonight

I also found an awesome pet meat place that will make feeding balanced raw food, cheaper than any canned food for our kitty

I am the woooorst putter offer in the WHOLE wide world… where I am concerned. Curiously, I am THE best and most efficient and even bossy, if you’re my friend and you need something done….!
BUT I always find that if i have a huge hurdle of clearing up in front of me, i go get 10 cups of tea…. and do nothing (or get on BB, like now… :whistling but if i start with clearing a table, or emptying one drawer then it escalates and i find myself an hour or so later still doing stuff…. you just have to keep going rather than stopping for a cuppa.

So try small things to do. Manageable small things that you can cross off one at a time. It is satisfying crossing something off a list.

I am tackling the house just that way – one cupboard, one draw, one wall of the bathroom (mould ) at a time. I am making slow but steady progress.

I also have a timetable to work to Tomorrow, my youngest is heading south to spend some time with his gf and her family. Then she will be coming to stay with us in August, and we want the house nice and welcoming Yesterday I did two kitchen cupboards. Maybe the freezer today???

But ive just realised why nothing else is getting done in this house… since ive had 4 dependent creatures…. by the time I’ve finished cleaning litter trays and hoovering and stripping willow branches, its time to start cleaning litter trays again….!!!!!

BTW. I def prefer stripping fresh willow branches rather than dried branches…. the fresh leaves stay intact rather than breaking into a zillion pieces when they are dry. I’m leaving a few branches to COMPLETELY dry to see if the leaves fall off on their own but I don’t think so….

I’ve just spent an hour in the sun stripping a third of the willow stash i got on friday….
THAT is where my time goes….

I find it easier to complete everything if I write a list. And not just a list that says “tidy bunnies” and then “tidy house”
It has to be super broken down into small, manageable pieces. It makes it less daunting (though the list is longer) but easier to complete things because the tasks are smaller, so you get more achievement and set yourself up for success, which makes it easier to keep going.

So it’ll look something like
“clean bunny litter tray”
“sweep around Dory’s cage”
“take out recycling from kitchen”
“tidy coffee table”
“put shoes away”

and so on That way, I can easily cross off so much stuff, because putting shoes away only takes a few seconds. But, I have to actually write a list for it work. I don’t always remember to write lists

Whew, I’m alone again. It was quite a busy weekend, I had people coming over for dinner on both days. I love it that our friends like to visit me frequently, because I can’t really get out of the house. But my lack of energy combined with the time they stay is usually a problem. After 2 hours with people I get so tired that I nearly fall asleep at 8 in the evening. Many of our friends like to come for dinner and tend to stick around afterwards for coffee, and before you know it they’re there all evening. The Dutch usually dine at 6, so that’s pretty early. It doesn’t help that many of our friends are single and not really eager to go home to an empty house. I decided to be pretty blunt with my friend today: I really enjoyed it that you dropped by today, but I’m getting so tired that I can’t keep up a conversation anymore. Really saw no other way to put it, because most of our circle of friends are quite socially awkward and don’t do subtle hints.

Today is my rabbits last day in this house-I’m moving them home tomorrow, but wont be moving myself until sometime next week.

My boyfriend is devastated, and I feel awful for him. As much as he loves Yumi( who has fully embraced him as the softie who will give her treats if she begs),-we adopted Peep together-making Peep his first pet, and he not-so-secretly harbors a serious soft spot for him as a result (though so far Peep has been more of a mammies boy if we’re honest.)

All in all the whole thing is a bit sucky!

It’s so difficult being away from your beloved buns. I hope everything will go quickly and smoothly and I wish you all a lot of happyness in your new home!

Well, I got some surprising news today. My BF has been through a lot to get his bachelors’ degree (he’s only 1 exam away from obtaining his degree now). After all these years of stress and frustration I always thought that he’d jump at the chance to leave uni and find a job after getting his degree. After a chat with his study counselor he made the decision to go for a masters’ degree next year. Although the job market for BME bachelor students is pretty good, you’ll always get more out of a masters’ degree.

Last trimester he took some classes in another field: Health Studies. These classes focussed on the financial side of health care and how to guarantee good healthcare in the future (at reasonable prices). He was super enthousiastic about it, and found his motivation to study again. He’s been doing really great the last couple of months. It turns out that HS has a specialised master track in that field: health care optimalisation. It’s a one-year track, so that should be easy enough to oversee. It’s not like it’s going to be several years of studying again.

Downside is that we have to put our plans to look for a house together on hold for another year. We’re really eager to move in together and make a home for the three of us, but that won’t be possible until one of us has a stable income. Of course I support him in his choice, but I was really dreaming about taking the next step. Ah well, I can wait another year if it’s for a good cause. It’s really good to see that he seems to have found his field of interest, and I hope it’ll be a great career choice for him

I’m glad for Bas since it sounds like he found his happy niche, but I do feel for you since I know how exhausting positive anticipation can be. I guess you’ll have to pass the time consoling yourself with ridiculous amounts of cuddles from your tiny whiskered doctor. On the bright side, it seems to me that each passing year goes by faster than the last, so this year’s bound to zoom by much quicker than you expect.

Preeettty good.. I survived the day with 2 teenagers and a tweenager. So that’s something…  It’s School holidays here so I was with my nieces and nephew.

Buns are all okay. I hope they’re happy for the willow I was able to find today.  Yay!!

Dog is doing good too and currently snoring in front of the heater.

Haha, good question! I suppose because our winter is so mild?
The weeping willow is in the process of losing it’s leaves now and non-weeping varieties are not far behind. The willow I found today was not an established tree. It had sprouted by the creek either from a fallen branch or cut wood that was thrown there.

Well today could have been better. Found out my Nanna has congestive heart failure. So that’s obviously not good. That being said, she is relatively well, it’s not like she’s in a hospital bed, she’s still at home in her unit. So she is well enough to still be at home which is good. It’s really a matter of how long it takes to progress, it could be a few weeks, it could be a year or more. She’ll be 90 in January

On a little plus, I did buy my first cat related item today, lol. I found a cheap rubbery brush in Kmart on clearance. Although I’m thinking it could be nice for the buns and I may have to get a second one (not sure how they’ll go at sharing a brush).

Thanks everyone Yes she has always been an extremely active and independent person, and I think the worst thing would be to see her hospitalised or in a home for any length of time. Her mind is still as sharp as it’s always been, so that would only make it harder for her. But it’s early days yet, the medicine may do wonders for her.

I’ve just finished stripping branches for TEN – that’s TEN! – whole Ikea food bags of dried willow leaves for winter….. of course, thats not enough, but not bad for one haul.
And they only survived on rations of 5 bags last winter…. so another two or three hauls and ill have to buy a storage cupboard just for them….

Hazel, how big is your little Maine Coon kitty now? Mosby I think (hopefully I’m not remembering wrong). I hope the other pets are well too, just wondering how much he has grown

Thanks for asking, they’re all doing well. Mosby has been plateauing at 12 lbs for a few months now, and we’re starting to think that’s as big as he’ll get. He might be a dud… We were hoping he would get to be around 20 lbs, but every time he jumps in my lap, I’m thankful that he’s on the smaller side. I think a lot of those giant Maine Coons are overweight, people like to ignore their weight because “they’re Maine Coons, they’re supposed to be big”. Although we have seen some that are that heavy, but not fat. It depends a lot on genetics I guess, there seems to be a wide spectrum. Mosby’s mom was on the smaller side too I think.

I can’t wait for you to get your kitten, how exciting!! I have a couple of names for you, but I guess we should at least wait until he’s born.

12 pounds of cat sounds very good to me. I have a friend whose bridge American Bulldog always insisted on sitting in her lap. If her lap was un available, he chose somebody else’s, f ex mine. It was very flattering, of course, but 70 pounds of affectionate ambull in your lap is very impractical.

I keep wanting to participate in the chat but with a 2 year old and 5 month old plus the 2 new baby bunnies I’m working hard on socializing I fall behind from the get go lol!

So a few e months ago my mom had quintuple bypass surgery for her heart. The thing is I’m not sure how much time she has left. I’ve grown up always feeling like my mom was a ticking time bomb but I seriously think her fuse is running out. A month after the bypass she waa having a lot of pain. Turns out her bypass collapsed, causing a major heart attack. They did a few test and apparently the veins they used were already clogged so her heart isn’t working well. So they fixed the collapsed vein with a stent. Which they have yo watch because she has a blood disorder that is very thick and clots. Couple weeks later she was having issues again. A lot of pain and couldn’t breathe. Now she’s in heart failure and gets fluid build up around her heart and lungs. She weighs herself twice a day and if she gains 4 pounds in a day she takes a diuretic. It seems to be helping her. I just really wish shed take care of herself a little better. She smokes and doesn’t eat the healthiest. I’m not sure at what point she will realize her life is in danger! Sorry I had to rant somewhere anonymously lol!

I’m sorry about your mom. I don’t know how you deal with the stress of looking after pigmies and bunnies AND worrying about your mom. I can only hope that she is as comfortable as possible in the wake of all these complications. You are a very strong person, from the sounds of it, so if venting to us ever helps ease the burden even a little bit, vent away. *hug*

That sounds very stressful NBO, please take good care of yourself. It can be really difficult to make time for yourself, but if you feel guilty about that remember that you can only care for others if you’re taking care of yourself.

It’s totally okay to vent, we all understand! It’s very frustrating to see someone who’s already in poor health engaging in an unhealthy lifestyle. Many people with a severe health problem think: it’s too late to change my ways, the damage is done already. But it’s never too late to go for a healthier lifestyle, it’s been proven that quitting smoking alleviates several symptoms of lung or cardiovascular diseases. Same goes for eating less sugar, salt and saturated fat.
Would she be open to a talk about that?

Just been watching Naked Attraction – a programme where a participant chooses his/her date based on naked participants !!

@BM: yes, it’s really interesting to watch. I don’t mind joining Bas or friends of mine when they make their trip to the blood bank. A friend of mine donates plasma and that takes 45 minutes, so it’s better to bring a friend and have a chat. Here in NL it’s not allowed to be paid for blood donations, and it’s all voluntary. This makes the atmosphere super relaxed, and people get a lot of treats. They even have gluten-free snack bars with chocolate.

One time I managed to shock the operation staff a bit during a surgery for which I was awake. I had a blood clot behind one of the valves of one of the major veins in my leg and that caused blood to flow back into the leg, so the whole vein had to go. They did that by lasering the vein shut from the inside out, creating an artificial burn which makes the body absorb the vein. It’s a really quick and easy procedure and I didn’t find it a bad experience at all. While lasering it gives off a really good smell, not different from BBQ pork. I got some really odd looks when I said: “Never thought I could smell so good.”

Well, Otis has cherry eye. It started on Thursday, then got better and happened again a few hours later. If any of you have experience/advice it would be much appreciated. We got some ointment from the vet, but of it doesn’t improve in a few days, he might have to have surgery. Some people have had success massaging it back into place, we’re trying that as well but it keeps popping back out.

BM: We’ll definitely keep applying the ointment and massaging it, hopefully it will work at some point. With the surgery they would either stitch the gland back into place or remove it entirely, but that’s not recommended except as a last resort, since it plays a major role in keeping the eye lubricated.

Vienna: Thanks, we’ll try the warm towel. It’s hard to do anything to his eye, he’s just wigging out at this point because we’ve been keeping him in his crate most of the time. If we let him out he’ll just go bananas, running into furniture at full speed… which probably wouldn’t help his eye heal. We can’t even take him for a walk because he still needs one puppy shot in three weeks. Yesterday he managed to scratch his eye bloody, I made a cardboard cone for him and he’s wearing that for now, we’ll get him a proper cone later today.

I just wish we could fix it ourselves, there’s a lot of videos on youtube about it and it just seems to pop back in easily for them. I don’t know if we’re doing something wrong or if his is just too messed up.

My father visited us tonight to celebrate both our belated birthdays. Bas’ birthday was in May, but I wasn’t finished with his present yet. I made him LARP-gear, the theme of the whole set is brass, dark brown and navy blue. First I made a sturdy hand-sewn canvas backpack with several accessories (2 bags and 3 pouches for small items such as inkwells) and a hidden pocket for valuables. The main gift was in the backpack: a renaissance style writing kit. My father made the box from pine wood, which I painted in chocolate brown. The box was lined with navy blue velvet and contains an embossed leather journal and 2 calligraphy pens, 1 with a decorative quill.

That took a bit of work, but it was so worth it. Definitely a great project to work on, and I hope Bas has a lot of fun with it Everything turned out great, even the vlaai I baked today. It was a bit stressy at first, but I managed to make something of it. If people are interested in the recipe, it’s in the GF baking topic.

My dad really enjoyed it, he said the balance of the flavours was great. Many store-bought vlaaien are too sweet, bypassing the whole idea of the bread-dough crust and the naturally sweet filling. Breintje also had a small piece, but he just made off with the apricot filling and left us with the crust.

I’ve been away from my bunnies since Thursday and I think I’m going crazy.
My mam and brother are minding them at the moment, but they are both fairly bewildered by their sudden move (I’ve been informed Yumi has been sulking since I’ve left, refusing to leave her cage, and when they take her out,she jumps back into her pen to continue her sulking.)

It also means they are going to have been separated for an entire week! Their litter trays are beside each other and they can still interact somewhat between the bars, but I feel like its going to set the bonding back a fair bit *sigh*

BM – 96 grids on one level would be bigger than my entire house… !!!! (! or did you mean with one shelf, so =2 levels?)

Mine is 5 wide, 4 high and 2 deep. Which makes 5×4 = 20 x2(front and back) = 40 +10 (roof) + 16 (8 each side)
= 66 total ! (I know Azerane used grids to make her jump-up steps, but I have a box) and thats really quite big and I have 2 big buns. Of course it could ALWAYS be bigger, but I have space limitations and they are freeroam when I’m home.

I’d be looking at 2 level if you’re going to have three buns in there. Preferably 2 level with a pair as well, but it depends on what dimensions you’re going for. Just the bottom level of mine 5x2x2grids is only 38 grids. If I include the top level and shelf it’s 5x4x2 and 77 grids (including those I used for the steps). If you extend it out to 6x2x2 it’s 44 grids or 6x4x4 it’s 89 grids (I think). So long story short, it’s plenty

Also I had a dream where Dory escaped her cage during the night. She spent her night shredding an entire roll of paper towel!

We took him back to the vet today. The ointment seems to be having no effect so far, it actually looks a bit more angry than before. We told the vet that we tried to massage it back into place and she told us to stop doing that because it’s probably aggravating the whole thing. She said surgery is the best option at this point, and quoted us just under $400. Quite a chunk of money, but I know it could have been much worse. We’re taking him to our previous vet on Wednesday (he moved further away so we had to switch). He’s really good and we want to get a second opinion from him before putting Otis through surgery, although we don’t really think he will be able to give us any other options. The vet gave us a tranquilizer for him, he was spazzing out so much that all three of us had to hold him still so she could look into his eye. I had actually (jokingly) said to the hubby before that we should ask for a tranquilizer because it’s becoming almost impossible for the two of us to administer the ointment. Follow-up vet visit for Effi (dog) today. The antibiotics haven’t made any radical change, but the anaplasmosis must of course still be eradicated. She’s back on the pain meds, she got a prescription for a huge pack of Previcox (NSAID), the vet thinks she has arthrosis. I’m inclined to think so too. Poor girl, I think she’s way too young for arthrosis, but it’s apparently not uncommon in 9 year old dogs of her size.

@bam: Poor Effi, I hope the meds will give her relief. Arthritis is indeed a common problem with aging big dogs, and there a several therapy options available. I know that there are vet clinics who specialise in dog physical therapy. One of the treatments for pain relief and mobility is hot water therapy. I hope your vet or another vet can give you advice about further treatments.

I don’t want to get snarky here, but I quit one of my hobbies in a rage yesterday. I love cooking and I used to cook for people with special diets (vegetarian, allergies etc) for our LARP club. The other members of the catering team cook for the large group of people who don’t have any diets. The ratio of diet/no diet is about 8 out of 70 people. One of these volunteers is one of those holier-than-thou hipsters, and he proposed to make all meals vegetarian by standard. He said: “If people still really insist on meat they can check that option on the application form.”. The others started to chime in: “I bet people won’t even miss it.”. Nobody stopped to ask themselves: is it right to do this?

I’m opposed to pushing your own lifestyle upon others, it was really a matter of principle for me. You’re there to cook a great meal for our paying visitors, not to push your lifestyle ideas upon other folks. Only a small percentage of our group wants to eat vegetarian, and we already have a special diet cooking group for them. Nobody understood my opinion in this, and they started to attack me for hating on vegetarian food. Ehm…guys…you remember that I cook for the vegetarians at our LARPs? Grr, I hate it when people try to force their lifestyle upon others, and I told them that I wouldn’t cooperate with this. It’s very disrespectful to our visitors. So I left.

Ellie: The vet also suggested physiotherapy. Their physiotherapist returns in September. Until then, when her abx course is over, we’re supposed to do stuff like walk in water. She’s in excellent shape according to the vet, but she mustn’t lose muscle.

Mmm… bread and cheese… Hubby and I went to one of those Medieval Times dinner and show things, which has a jousting show with other showy horse displays etc. They literally served us a either a giant chicken drumstick or turkey leg on a plate, and that was about it, haha. I’ll just focus on making the costumes, and if I really want to attend the LARP I can always volunteer as costume & make-up assistant. Many people volunteer as actors for the game masters, they’re sent out to interact with the players and to give the story the twist that the game masters intended. These NPC’s can give quests or act as dignitaries, merchants or monsters. The costume room is always a mess with all the actors quickly having to switch costumes between roles, and they could definitely use a helping hand now and then. But first I need to work on my health, and making costumes is something fun I can do in my own time at home.

Ellie- I dislike anyone telling anyone how to live their life. Particularly when it’s not an event to do with food per say-they want to be fed but they arent there for their food choice to be ammended for them. Plus the reality is feeding them a vegetarian meal isnt going to change their mind on how they eat, so it seems very pointless?
Im vegan and I cant stand other vegans/vegetarians half the time. They get so high and mighty over everything. One person told me I wasn’t a real vegan cause I was wearing a woolly jumper (it was actually acrylic-wool is expensive!)

I put an awful fear in my poor mother, telling her to make sure the rabbits didn’t get heatsroke in the warm weather we had the last few days.
I was updated the other day she couldnt handle the stress any more and had gone and bought them an electric fan just in case.

Pff, somethimes having a bun around feels like having a toddler around. Breintje decided that -starting tuesday- he’s too spoilt to eat all his veg. He eats the juicy carrot top leaves and the crunchy celery, and I’m left with a plate full of carrot stalks. Tuesday evening I put the stalks in the cage with him when he went to bed. This seemed to work, but he ignored them this night. Now he’s walking around being very cranky that his evening veg hasn’t arrived yet, and I’m waiting for him to finish his plate. He decided to nibble on one or two stalks, and then threw everything off the plate. *sigh*

It’s that bunnies don’t eat desserts, but he was flipping his plate and being so cranky and thumpy yesterday that I was in a mood for “off to bed without dessert if you don’t stop your antics right now, mister…”. I was nearly in that stage where moms start to use full names, including all Christian names inbetween (which is quite a litany for me with 2 Catholic grandmas).

@bam: Wow, I never expected indoor buns to be so in touch with the seasons. It does make sense when you put it like that: in times of plenty: pick only the tastiest bits. Thanks for letting me know that bam also does this. How do you manage this behaviour?

@AZ: isn’t that just the best thing about other peoples’ kids, that you can have fun and then leave them with their parents when you’re going home? I really like the kids of friends of ours, I can have a lot of fun with both of the young tots, and I’m more appreciative of my quiet orderly home afterwards.

Although its never good for someones pride, i see it as a good thing when animals are indifferent if you are there or not…. having had a rescue dog with major separation anxiety, it made me feel bad / worried when i wasnt there with her….

Live to work and work to live. Sad, isn’t it?

We took Otis to the other vet. We told the tech about his eye ointment and the tranquilizer, when she saw what it is she was pretty shocked. The vet later explained to us that this is a very old school drug, and something that you might give to a dangerous, aggressive dog, certainly not a puppy. On top of that, he showed us how bloodshot his eyelids were, and said that this could actually make his condition worse because it messes with their eyes so much. He has seen some dogs that were prescribed this drug, and then developed cherry eye because of it. I guess the first vet knew that, but didn’t think making it worse was anything to worry about, since she had already decided to do the surgery. He was very much against it, and was actually able to put it back into place (something the other vet didn’t even try). We took him home, it popped back out during the night and we haven’t been able to put it back since then, it’s almost impossible to hold him still. The hubby took him back today and they’re keeping him for a few hours to try and put it back and make sure it stays in place this time. I hope they’ll give us a different tranquilizer in case we have to work on his eye again. We’ve both gotten bit already. The good news is, he’s all done with his shots and we can take him for walks now!

Vienna: Yeah, chances are that it will happen with the other eye too at some point, but hopefully it won’t. It happens more in puppies than adults, so if his other eye can hold on until he gets a bit older, it might be alright.

jersey: It is more common in certain breeds, mostly bully breeds. GSPs aren’t on that list, so hopefully it’s just because he’s a puppy and won’t happen anymore as he gets older.

I found Rumball today with his head through hole in fleece blanket. Who knows how long he’d been like that. Ive seen TimTim do this and have pics of him but it been when I was there and he’s good at slipping his head back out. Not so much Rumball ! Im not sure he’d be able to chew his way out.
I normally have the blanket doubled over and folded around some carpet tiles that sit up on top of old chest of drawers. He and Ailis hang out up there. Ailis has been chewing at it and bunching it up, so I went to take rug out yesterday but it fell down like a curtain. They both thought this was great and took a lot of interest in it. So I left it like that. Mistake! The chewed holes were obviously bigger then I realised unless Ailis did it overnight. And Curious George investigated….

I had to tear the thing more to get him free.

Ive been wanting to make the fleece strips curtain attached with velcro, so this incident will get me moving on that!

@jersey: Some buns have all the ways to get themselves into trouble. It’s really surprising how fast they can chew holes in blankets or curtains. Our record stands at a 15 cm hole through a thick curtain overnight 0_o

We have a one-day summer here: this morning we had lovely sunshine and it was really hot (nearly touching the 30’ies). It’s already clouding over and my joints predict an awful thunderstorm for the evening. We’ve managed to keep our room temperature at a comfortable 23 °C, for which Breintje will be really thankful.
I wanted to make the most of the heat and the sunshine, so we went shopping. Because I’m sitting still in my mobility scooter it has to get really warm to be comfortable for me. The heat is great for my muscles and for my mood. It did help that I managed to fit into the loosest of my summer shorts again, and I could even sit down in them comfortably. So I finally got the chance to wear a cute outfit summer again, and Bas was cheering for legs ^_^

Jersey- no idea what caused it the vet had no ideas either it could be the fact that here it is really hot compared to usual and i have been tying to fatten her up for show. that’s the only thing i could think of.

Q8&Ellie- she is acting all drugged up from the pain meds but not really any change I got 25mls of critical care into her today pretty easily which isn’t usual.

the cages are both open so cedric can visit his sister. also it is kind of a test to see how poppy is feeling because she usually jumps right out once the cages are open. right now she is just loafing on her new ceramic tile that my dad brought home ( both rabbits have one). my poor sweet poppy. she still isn’t drinking or eating, through the whole night she only drank a tiny bit especially for her.

It was just a list for the day! Granted many of the things on it were well overdue for needing to be done, but I got the whole list done and then some. Needless to say I’m pretty worn out today, and my mum is coming over to help us tidy up the yard, so that will be fun when I’m already exhausted, lol. Here’s hoping the forecast rain kicks in so we don’t have to do much

Also the new hay rack seems to be working well for the buns. Less mess, less bunny poop outside the tray, and I haven’t even fitted the coroplast in properly. With a properly sized and cut piece of coroplast it should be super tidy They do have to work for their hay a little more, and I have to make sure I pull some through some of the holes when I fill it, but no big deal

We really trust this vet, and we will make the longer drive from now on instead of going to the one closer to our house. He’s our rabbit vet anyway, but we hadn’t been there since getting Oscar neutered.
Sadly they weren’t able to put it back in this time. The vet was already gone so we couldn’t talk to him about what to do next, but the tech said he would probably have to have it fixed surgically after all. If it does come to that, at least we know he’ll be on good hands though. She mentioned (as did the vet at our first visit) to have it done during his neuter at around 8 months of age. We really didn’t want to have him neutered before he’s about 18 months old, but I also wouldn’t feel comfortable leaving his eye like this for that long. Then again, I would hate to put him through two separate surgeries. Not sure what to do now, I guess we’ll talk to the vet again and see what he thinks.

bam, how is Effi doing now? I hope she’s feeling better!

Hazel, it does seem a bit sad to have a boy dog neutered at such a young age, but then again…I’m glad you’re back with this good vet now, so you can discuss the option with someone you trust.

Effi is much the same. Something is clearly wrong, but some days are good and other days not so good. I guess the best thing is to have the CT done so we know what joints are involved or if she has spinal stenosis or what.

Hi all! Glad to be back from a short vacation Sorry to hear about the dogs who are not doing so well sending many vibes!!

I was in the US Rocky Mountains and seeing bunnies in the landscape everywhere. I also saw some wild lagomorphs – pika! They are soooo cute, but too fast and small so I didn’t get any good pictures. Thor did pretty well without us, which was good. I’m glad I found a sitter to trust around here.

My big news is that for my birthday present this year, my husband and I have agreed to go look at bonding partners for Thor this week!! We will probably do speed dating this weekend. I have so much to do to get ready

Just talked to the vet, he thinks surgery is the thing to do. So Otis going in on Tuesday to get it fixed. We’re holding off on the neuter, even though it would have been much cheaper to do it all at the same time. But we know it’s better for him to wait, and the tech I talked to agreed. Some vets frown upon late neuters, so I was glad they didn’t give us a hard time about it.

There is a cow in the back field who I think went into labour last night..she’s been bellowing for hours the poor girly!

My pair of eejits have continued to make a show of me in front of my family. Peep is a pretty suspicious eater-wont always take treats from your hand cause he isn’t sure what they are, which is wildly disappointing as I like to feed mine ‘treats’ from the garden- we have a wild garden to help bees and other pollinators, and while there are toxic species in it, meaning the rabbits aren’t allowed out into it ever, it has some edible species like nasturtium, sage, thyme, mint, wild rocket, lavender, basil, hollyhock, yarrow,cornflower, chickweed, coneflowers, chamomile, along with raspberry bushes, and grape vines.

Peep eventually got the hang of nasturtium flowers(not the plant) and cornflowers, but it took a fair bit of convincing.
But, toilet paper cannot be left near him, as he quickly noms it down.

Do any of you watch Zoo? It’s not a great show, we actually gave up on it after a few episodes back when it first came out. But then we decided to give it another shot and watched everything on Netflix before the new season started. It seems to be getting slightly better now.

It was someone’s pet, but still an outdoors pet. I got a tetanus shot this morning but not the appropriate type of antibiotics. It makes me somewhat angry. I’ll have to go back tomorrow. And I hate that so much, but I cant have a melon hand.

No. Melon hands are definitely NOT desirable. How on earth did they not prescribe a Z pack or some similar antibiotics? Don’t they know the high risk of serious infection after a cat bite? Good grief… I suggest irrigating the puncture areas with iodine, tension wrapping the hand, and icing it elevated to reduce swelling.

She gave me Flucloxacillin, it’s standard with hand injuries, although NOT if they’re caused by cat bites. Flucloxacillin has no effect against pasturella, and Penicillin V should always be first choice. Cat bites almost always cause pasteurella infections, and those are the ones that arise soon after the bites. But if you’re not a health professional, you can’t say that here. But I did find an article in the Swedish Medical Journal about an MP who was found guilty in a malpractice complaint (you can’t sue doctors here, only complain to a board), because he’d only prescribed Flucloxacillin and a tetanus booster for a cat bite. Person lost his finger. Q8, I wish you could go with me tomorrow, you’d not let them get away with it. I wish Chewie could come with. After he rids the world of Xenomorph, obviously, but he’ll be done with that later tonight, so that shouldn’t be a problem. Bam -that sounds horrendous. Cat bites are very painful to deal with. Honestly I think we’d all like Chewie with us wherever we’re going .his booplesnoot slays me.

So I bit the bullet and set up a permanent pen for Peep and Yumi. They’ve been in it 2 hours and they’re making themselves at home-flops and binkies.
Why won’t they just hurry up ans love each other!! (I feel like an impatient child)

Grandma and grandpa have purchased the indoor run Chewie will have to live in for a little over a month in April (for Canadian immigration at-home quarantine). He’s never had anything less than a two-bedroom apartment so we’re all nervous. lol Perhaps slaying Xenomorphs will tire him out enough to not mind too much.

Bam – we’d gladly go with you. I’d use all my bossy nurse skills on your doctor while Chewie threatens to customize her stethoscope and “dot” all the I’s in her patient files if she doesn’t take your melon-limb seriously and prescribe effective meds.

Well we went from about 230 litres total to 458 we got a Samsung bottom mount (freezer on bottom).We’ve more than tripled our freezer space and have a ridiculous amount of fridge space too We can now also buy ice cream and there’s plenty of room for pet food! I took comparisons pics but will have to wait until my laptop is back up and running again to upload them. It looks rather monolithic in our little kitchen but I’m loving it already.

I was admitted to hospital for the cat bite. Sensitive people shouldn’t look at this pic (although it’s just a pic of a very swollen hand and fingers ):

I got the appropriate antibiotics IV and they opened up the finger joint and irrigated it, apparently that must be done asap to a cat bite that has penetrated the joint capsule, or the bacteria will destroy the joint.

Now I’m back home and on oral amoxicillin, and extremely grateful.

It’s raining. I just read that this year Denmark (I live just a couple kilometers from Denmark) could get it’s first July without one single summer day in 38 years.

@Ellie: Thank you! The ER doctor was great. She understood perfectly. But I was very surprised when she admitted me. I knew cat bites were bad, but not hospital-bad. In Sweden, almost nothing is hospital-bad.

Yes, I get that, it’s the same in NL. It has to be pretty serious before you’ll be admitted, and you’re thrown out as soon as you can eat and go to the bathroom by yourself. Sometimes they’re even polite enough to let you pack your stuff first before they toss you out with your whole wardrobe.

But yes, animal bites can get pretty ugly, especially carnivore bites. Cats and dogs carry a variety of nasty bacteria in their mouths which are harmless if they are on the skin, but quite harmful if the skin is punctured. You already noticed how quickly your hand became badly infected, so it’s a good thing they finally took action. Infections can have nasty body-wide side-effects, which is why they should be treated ASAP.

Well I’m afraid we don’t have the box. We got premium delivery so that they could take away our old fridge, that also included the fridge being unpacked before it was brought inside. Now we can use the fridge at night without turning a light on too

Bam I’m sorry to hear about that cat bite. When hubby was telling me one day a few years ago about how bad cat scratches and bites can be to people i blew it off as him overreacting as I’ve had cats my whole life, gotten countless scratches and been bitten on a couple of occasions and i never did more than rinse the wound. But certainly they can be quite severe and I’m glad you got treatment before it got any worse.

Apparently my laptop is up and running again (though i have to double check with hubby) we bought a new harddrive yesterday. He’s yet to check whether my old files can be recovered from the other drive. But at least I’ll have a computer again.

ETA: Today (July 30th) is Apollo and Luna’s first gotcha day!

Jersey + Q8 : I think we’ve all been there. One of the saddest days was when i had a cookie in one hand for me and a treat in the other for the buns and in a sleep deprived manner ate their treat and handed them my cookie. *Facepalm*

I went to the petshop yesterday, and picked up a hay and carrot treat roller for the buns. Unwrapped it and handed it to them only to realise with horror it was crawling with bugs. I nearly threw up. I snatched it away but ugh it was absolutely disgusting. At first I thought they were maggots, but looking closer they were some form of larval stage with pseudo limbs, like beetle young. Still horrendous to find on a store bought item though.

Jersey, please don’t read stuff like that. It’s beyond our control. I liked being in the hospital because they monitored me carefully. CRP, vitals etc. I knew what they were looking out for (SIRS) and it felt so reassuring they seemed so on top of things. But there’s of course always the worry that you’d catch something worse from the hospital itself.

That’s disgusting DFace! Glad you found out in time! Did you throw it away in an outdoor bin? These could be larvae of a kind of moth which infects all starchy items in a pantry. They love flour, pasta and cookies and will eat through bags and cardboard.

Sadly, pet stores are a perfect breeding ground for these moths: nutricious starchy snacks stored in cardboard.

Bas gave me a scare when he brought home a toy for Breintje: the cardboard box contained some larvae and some sort of spider silk which this moth produces. I started yelling: “Out, out with that thing! There’s over €300 of gluten-free flour and special diet products in my pantry!!!”

Ellie, you must mean the Indian meal moths. I’ve had those. I never found the source. Always store all flour and nuts and cereal in plastic or glass containers with tight lids.

Ellie- it’s the same silky bugs. They’re in a bag in the garden (I’ll be bringing that particular treat back to the shop!) I know it’s not their fault, but I did have to spend money on something that should be as advertised!

Luckily i had carrot tops to earn forgiveness from my pair for stealing their treat back!

I often browse the “cute animal” section of 9gag together with Bas, and he squees in a higher pitch than I do

@Bam: yes, probably those. They’re my worst nightmare, because I have to stock up on basics. Something as simple as baking pancakes may require a whole afternoon shopping trip to 3 stores because store 1 doesn’t sell GF buckwheat flour, store 2 doesn’t sell plain GF flour and so on. So my pantry is the laughing stock of the whole group of friends. Words like “pack rat”, “feed an orphanage” and “zombie apocalypse” have been uttered

I store most of my stuff in these handy stackable Modula boxes. They’re made from clear hard plastic, come in several sizes and are firmly stackable. Totally in love with the stuff! I don’t know if they’re sold outside NL, but you can buy them at Blokker (major chain of household item stores).

@Dface: whew, glad you did. You don’t want those buggers in your house.

Haha, Jersey, I do love that one with the kitten and cockatoo, that popped up on my feed just the other day, cracks me up You’re probably right about it being Dory, lol.

We’ve had pantry moths before, they’re a huge pain to get rid of, and for us they got into everything, even well sealed plastic containers, it was an absolute nightmare. Then even after I’d thrown everything out, for months after we had tiny little moths flying around the house.
