I have my rabbit Jingles at the vet today – he has a possible bladder stone.  I took him in last Thursday and the vet could not really tell from the x-ray whether it was a stone or not – she just suspects it could be.  We discussed doing an ultra sound but the cost is $180 and she was hoping between now and then she could sneak him in for one if someone else had one scheduled – apparently the people who do this are very nice and would have been willing to do a quick scan on him to check for certain but that didn’t happen

So instead she is going to sedate him and see if she can feel anything – she may end up doing surgery on him if she suspects a stone.  In the meantime he has not eaten for a week and I’ve been handfeeding, administering sub-q fluids and giving baytril and buprenex or metacam – the buprenex and baytril may be why he isn’t eating but he wasn’t eating before either.  I hope we can get this resolved today.   I’ve known of other rabbits who have had stones removed and have recovered just fine.  He’s a very large rabbit – about 10 pounds so he can stand to lose a few pound and still be okay, but still….

I also have been helping a friend of mine with her Holland Lop who decided that baby aspirin would be a very tasty treat and ate about 10 of them this week so I’ve been doing fluids on him for her – he’s a skinny little bunny too because he has dental issues and he’s just small anyway so doing fluids has been a test for  me since all my rabbits are rather large and robust.  I took him to the vet today since I had Jingles in so they could do fluids.  We are having to do fluids for 5 days plus 2 days of a sulfa medicine for his aspirin overdose since their is a concern of liver or kidney problems with overdosing on aspirin.  So keep your medications away from rascally rabbits

Anyone ever dealt with either of these issues?

I take a lot of meds.  I divy them out for the day into a plastic holder every morning.  I get so scared when I drop one.  I search frantically to find it so the buns don’t get to it.    That is so scary.

Poor buns they are having a hard time little sweet creatures. Hope everything goes well for them.

I wish I had some advice for you on these two bunnies. One thing I wanted to mention though…isn’t there a non-invasive treatment for kidney stones using ultrasound? (They vibrate the stone to the point that it breaks up into dust and passes harmlessly.) Wouldn’t this be an option for Jingles if so?

I will keep you all in my prayers. You poor thing, so many to care for! You be sure to get some rest too! (((((((hugs))))))))

Luckily Jingles did not have a bladder stone – she ended up doing a bladder flush though. His x-ray showed his bladder look much improved. He had been evacuating quite a bit of sludge the past week when I was hand feeding him – I guess I ended up actually expressing his bladder and getting all the sludge down so he could evacuate it. She also thinks the baytril helped – apparently this is good for urinary tract infections.

However I just need to get him to eat now – we took him off the baytril for 24 hours – while this is great for UTI’s it also can cause an upset stomach so I’ll see if he eats when I get home. If not, well, more hand feeding and some reglan for him.

The other bun is doing well, just 2 more days of fluids and he’s done with that. She said normally he would have already shown signs of distress at this point.

Sophie has had what they called “bladder sludge”, was given Baytril and all is well. Now that I know she is prone to this, I know the signs and what to look for. Soph didn’t eat for 3 days, except raisins. she would eat her raisins, which were a treat but since that’s all i could get her to eat, i gave her as much as she wanted due to the weight that she had lost. Is it the oral baytril with the syringe in the mouth or are you lucky enough that Jingles will take the pill? Sophie was having none of the pill….

Make sure Jingles is drinking. i put gatorade diluted in her water bottle to replace electrolytes. The vet recommended this.

Best of luck. They did tell you to watch for UTI’S and bladder sludge in the future, right?

oh no! Thats a lot to deal with at once! I’m glad to hear that Jingles is doing better – I am not familiar with bladder sludge, but I’m glad they were able to help her out. What were the signs that it was a possible bladder stone or bladder sludge?

I’m glad to hear the holland lop is doing OK after the Tylenol incident (it wasn’t Dicken’s, was it?) I agree that probably the most likely time to see the signs would be immediately, right when the medicine was taking effect. Is it sub-q fluids that he is getting, or does “giving fluids” mean by mouth?
