One of my favorite root vegetables here. I love how it slices up so well and is so light and crunchy. I discovered it years ago when I forayed into vegetarianism for a bit.

I am curious. Can bunnies eat this? It would seem a lovely change from carrots and their sugar, as I don’t think jicama (pronounced HICK-ah-mah) has a high sugar content?

BTW, it’s great chopped up on salad! (YUM!)

Jicama reminds me of radishes, which arent good for bunnies (only the leaves). I’m interested in this answer, too.

Radishes are actually fine for bunnies, leaves, roots and stems.  Beets too, although your bunnies may get a bit of the vampire bunny look after feeding beets.  I find no references to rabbits eating Jicama, so my suggestion is to avoid it.  Other tubers are on the no list like potatoes and yams, so I would advise against feeding Jicama.

The actual radish bulb and the actual beet bulb are not good for rabbits, right?

From what I am reading online, most of the lists I am seeing say that the radish TOPS are OK, but I don’t see much information on the radish itself. In my opinion, since there are so many types of veg that are safe-foods, its best not to chance it on the more “iffy” ones. I would have to say that Osprey though is probably more of an expert on this than myself, so I’ll defer to him

I feed my guys radishes occasionally, in the spring when the organic farmers have them with the tops.  I also grow my own in the winter.  The buns seem to like the crunch of the roots, particularly Deanna.  I’m not sure where the idea that radishes and beets are bad for bunnies comes from.  Maybe they can be gassy like kale or broccolli, I am not sure.  Whenever I have a question about bunny appropriate greens, I refer to this list from Medirabbit: http://www.medirabbit.com/EN/GI_diseases/Food/feeding_en.pdf

You’re right Osprey I think its either gas producing or sugary…but yes I’ve often read that they are fine to feed.

Man, I’m sheltered, never heard of jicama! LOL never had heard of collard greens or ridichio before buns either :p

The salad bar places here in California like Fresh Choice usually have jicama as a salad ingredient.  I have never prepared it myself, but I really like it in a salad at these restaurants.  It is quite crunchy with a very mild flavor.  It is usually server cut up into small strips.  It is a root crop, I don’t know much more about it.

There is a lot of starch in jicama that is converted right into sugar and it isn’t the best choice for a bunny. Since it sounds like you’re looking for a yummy “desert-type” goodie, try a sprig of mint or small piece of fruit instead.

Oh no, I was just wondering if it would be okay to feed them…a little variety and all that. ^_^

I get guilted out of enough treats as it is. No need to make it worse! >.<

                            Thanks for the info, everybun!

Mimz You’re right there, my tow have me wrapped around their paw and get plenty of treats too. In fact I was just stink-eyed into giving them some. LOL
