OK. I’m 13.
And I got Jerry about 4 months ago.
I had 3 other bunnies before him.
2 lops,
Mr.SnickerDoodle and Mr.MuffinMan. They were outside bunnies… cage top blew open and I have 2 dogs. So…you can figure out what happen.![]()
1.regular.
NutMeg.Was too mean.. I got her wild. So…After I got jerry she had to go. It wasn’t my choice. But I don’t really regret it.
And Jerry keeps hurting me. Nipping/biting and stcrating …( i don’t know if i spelled that right)
when I come where he can see me, he runs a fast as he can away.
It’s like he can’t stand me. ![]()
I don’t know what’s wrong.
PLease some adivce.
Well He might be afraid of you try sitting on the ground with him and some treats let him come to you, altought it might take forever it is worthwhile. once he trusts you. as for the scratching and biting
1. Are you in his way?
2. Is there any was he might think you are being dominent or aressive?
My bunny scratches and nips me when She wants to go in that spot right then. so be patient and DON”T GIVE UP, to many animals are sent to shelters anyway they don’t need anymore.
I would never send one to a shelter btw. I gave NutMeg to this sweet girl and her mother.
He nips me sometimes when he’s hungry.
But i always have a bowl of pellets for him. Does that mean, he wants a different kind?
For being in his way… I have no idea…
I have another question. He keeps going under my bed.
And I don’t like him under there. I’ve tried to block it but somehow he finds a way.
I sprayed purfume around and under it. (someone said that might work)
But it doesn’t is there any way I can train not to go under there?
Btw. Jerry stays outside. I bring him in everyday. Because it’s over 90 everyday here.
But he has to sleep outside, sometimes. I put gatorade one of his water bottles.
Isn’t that suppose to raise his elecronlites?
welcome here.
is he neutered? this sounds like puberty. there is really no way to fix this other than to get him neutered.
was Nutmeg spayed? if she was not, that would more than likely describe why she was so mean to you.
check this link… http://www.rabbit.org/faq/sections/spay-neuter.html
also… after considering what happened to your first two bunnies, why is Jerry kept outside? is there a reason?
Welcome here! Firstly, we need to identify some facts about your rabbit, however, I would suggest to not put gadorade or anything in Jerry’s water … plain water is perfect ![]()
We need to establish:
What type of rabbit you have?
His size.
What are you feeding him and how much?
Has Jerry been neutured?
Has he been vet checked?
I know so many questions, but before we can help you out we need to know about Jerry.
oh. i didn’t see gatorade. yes, Dawn is right, no gatorade. waaaaaay (way!) too high in sugar. that’s not made for bunnies. all he needs is plain water.
OK, none of my bunnies have been spayed or neutured. But if I get him neutured, Are you guys saying he’ll go through a stage and then be a little nice-r? And about the gatorade the woman I got him from ( she breeds lops) said it was good for hot days. I only put in 2 lid fulls? not the whole bottle……
ABout keeping him outside…Well it’s not my house for one thing.
My parents are dirovced so I stay at my mom’s and Jerry stays at my dad’s
My dad prefers jerry outside.
But i got a way to prevent that from ever happen again.
I put a blanket over the lid.For shade. ANd the I put this huge paper weight type thing. (it ways more that 10 lbs)
OK for Dawn’s questions:
We need to establish:.
What type of rabbit you have?He is a Male,Red,Lop-ear.
His size.Not sure.
What are you feeding him and how much? Small World Rabbits pellets. And Everynow and then some Timothy Hay.
Has Jerry been neutured? No.
Has he been vet checked? Not That I know of ….But i did the examine thing. where you put him on your lap. His gums, ears, etc. are good.
I know so many questions, but before we can help you out we need to know about Jerry. Goodie! I love answering questions.
bunnies need to have an unlimited amount of timothy hay and not too much pellets either. theres more info on diet on the site and im sure someone will be along and link you to it. don’t worry i had no clue either when i first got my bun and now im like a pro at it lol. keep us posted and good luck. oh btw try freezing a water bottle then laying it in the cage so it keeps ur bun cool in the heat. the bottle will sweat n the bun will love it.
i would definatly read everything you can on the site. All the info is soo important to have a healthy happy bunny. See if you can get your dad informed too. Maybe he will consider letting Jerry inside. Bunnies are very heat sensative. If your bunny is only 5 months or so you might want to give him some alfalfa hay mixed with the timothy as well.
as far as the bunny nipping and such. He does need to be neutered. This would help alot plus makes the bunny’s urine not smell so bad which would be a good thing to tell your dad. You will probably have to block off the underneath part of your bed with something to keep him out. The perfume dosen’t always work.
All good advice so far!
Welcome to binkybunny.
He needs to be neutered, and examined by a vet. If you want help finding a vet who will see rabbits (not all do) just say so, and I’m sure someone who lives near you can help you find one!
He needs unlimited timothy hay to stay healthy.
Are their dogs in your dads yard? Any chance you can convince him to let the bunny stay inside?
There is loads of information on this website which you should read … under Bunny Info … With regards to Jerry’s diet … look under Diet Section … this will advise you on all Jerry’s needs to ensure he gets a good quality diet. Unlimited hay is extremely essential, however, depending on how much Jerry weighs will depend on the amount of pellets he needs. Too many pellets can cause yukky poops. Keep away from the pellets with all those colourful bits in … they are unhealthy for rabbits … just the plain, bland looking pellets are fine. There is also a list of healthy veggies which can be given to bunnies … however, go steady and just introduce one item at a time … if he is ok with that one then you can perhaps try another veggie … but do stick to the list and not too much sugary foodstuff like carrot, apple etc … just a wee sliver of one of those every other day.
If Jerry it ouside and its hot, you can always place a wet towel over his cage to keep him cool and also one of those handy frozen water bottles, which someone else mentioned here will keep him even cooler. Its great that you are bringing him inside when its hot too … just make sure you don’t let him roam all around .. maybe set him up in a small area … otherwise as Jerry is not neutured he will poop and probably pee everywhere.
If you decide to get Jerry neutured .. generally around 6 months for males (but do check) he will settle down (probably take about a month after his surgery) … his nipping/biting, peeing and all those nasty habits will be eliminated .. and that way Jerry will be a nicer bunny and both you and him will be much happier and content.
It is important to get Jerry vet checked, however, the cost is expensive … so maybe if you ask you Dad nicely he will oblige to taking him to the vets for you.
Hope this is not too overwhelming for you … but the better informed you are and the more you research and read … the better a bunny owner you will become … thus enabling you to pass on your knowledge to others.
Hope all goes well for you and Jerry ![]()
Welcome!
Oye Ugh, that’s just very sad about your first two bunnies. ![]()
Maybe if we can address your dad’s concerns, then there will be a way that things can change. Please list why your dad doesn’t want your bunny inside, and then we’ll go through them one by one.
FYI: Neutering your bunny will make his urine less pungent, make him less territorial, and allow him to be more successful with litter training. Territorial behavior can include aggressive, overly amorous, frustration and marking. And these behaviors can increase when you have more than one rabbit. Rabbit is happier because he is not dealing with all these crazy hormones (that he will not be using), and you will be happier because your bunny will be more at peace.
I know your breeder told you to put gatorade in the drink, but I too think that is just too much sugar. Ultimately, you have to do what you think is best but there are healthier less sugary ways to keep him hydrated. The best thing to do is get established with a rabbit savvy vet. You want to do that anyway so that you are not stuck if there ever is an emergency.
OK, lots of people thought he was 5 months old….No!
I didn’t buy him as a baby. Tell you the truth I got him at a flea market in Texas.
He’s Prob’ly about 10 months old. or at least a year he’s pretty big.
And I use some tips about not petting him so much and not getting on the floor as much.
And he is being a lot nicer. I been reading through websites, magazines, gone to petco and asked and everything.
So I got tons of info now.
I will take him to the vet and get him some frozen water bottles and stop putting gatorade in the water.
Btw. There is no way I can let him stay inside 24/7.
I let him in when I’m there and that’s it. I take back outside when I leave.
He sleeps in the house when I’m there. When I got to the mall or something he roams around and my room.
That’s as good as it’s going to get till I’m 18 and live in my own house…inless we moved.. Which won’t happen for years.
I got enough info for awhile,I’ll keep you update and send pics. SO THANKS A LOT for all the info/ help.
