jaw abcess

one of my bins has a jaw abcess. we has gone to the vet where it was lanced, and we still push on it to get some pus out, and put meds in it. it doesnt seem to be getting better, but he is acting better.does anyone have suggestions as to how to deal with this without more surgery. i dont want to force him through trauma again, as he still gets very stressed when we have to put the meds in the lanced abcess.

Is your rabbit on oral antibiotics, such as Baytril or Penicillin? Sometimes they need both. Abscesses should be completely removed, which may mean more than just lancing, then the rabbit would most likely be prescribed oral antibiotics for a week to 10 days (or longer). Jaw abscesses can be tricky and they sometimes occur due to tooth problems. Did your vet check out your rabbit’s teeth? That would need to be done under anesthesia. I don’t know what topical medicine you are putting on the abscess. There is a holistic treatment where Manuka honey is applied to the infected area, but I don’t know about other topical treatments.

It sounds like you need to make another trip to the vet to have him looked at. No rabbit likes going to the vet or having medicines forced on them, but the abscess needs to be dealt with and you also should find out how his teeth are.

I hope that he will be better soon and that the abscess will be totally taken care of.

Abscesses can be difficult to treat and are notorious for recurring. Its very important for a culture to be done to determine the type of bacteria as different types of bacteria will respond differently to antibiotics. Did your vet do this.

I recently dealt with an abscess at the back of my bunnies mouth. The vet also took an x-ray of his head to see if there were any complications in his jaw or face. This was pretty costly but a very important part in determining the cause and treatment of an abscess. Jaw abscesses can be caused by tooth root problems.

Has this bunny ever had abscesses before.

Yes, ask the vet about pen-g shots – not oral penicillin but injectible.

he has otomax right now, with a long tip attached to it to get it into the lanced part

he has never had abcesses before, and yes, an xray was taken.
the infection had spread to a point to the bone actually being deformed, and “eaten away at”.
i just really hope the otomax will work, although it does not seem to be

I meant to say that the penicillin is injectible, not oral. Baytril is usually given orally, but it can be given as a shot also.

I’m not familiar with Otomax. I looked it up and I see that it’s used to treat ear infections. Since that doesn’t seem to be working, it sounds like the vet may need to try another antibiotic or the combination of oral Baytril with injectible penicillin.

I hope that another treatment plan will knock out that infection and that your bunny will be well soon.
