From what I understand that sounds like it’s good, but is it good if she wants hay versus her food? Izabella is about 12 weeks old now and I give her unlimited amounts of hay, but it seems like that is really all she eats.  I fill her bowl of food (about 1/2 cup) about 2x’s a day and most times its still 2/3rd full.  Now that I am typing this, a 1/2 cup a food seems like a lot for a litle bunny, so maybe she is ok?  For now, I will not fill her bowl anymore until its empty. So, my question is Izabella eats way more Timothy hay than anything else, is this Ok and should I offer the hay unlimited?

Thank you all for you help, this website is great! Much better than any books I got from the library and having someone I can type my questions and actually get a response is just awesome.  Hugs to you all! And your Bunnies!

Absolutely, hay should be the largest part of her diet. You are lucky that she loves the timothy.

If she is a good hay eater then just give her that and introduce some veggies and you have pretty much a perfect rabbit diet. i wish rufus would eat hay

              Welcome Izabella!

That probably is way more pellets than she needs. Try giving her 1/4cup twice a day, or 1/2cup once a day. It’s good that she’s not overeating the pellets. Timothy hay is one of the single best things a bunny could eat, so I think she’s in good shape if she loves her hay!

What types of veggies are you giving her?

Izzy is less than 3 months old and I read a book that says not give bunnies anything other than bunny food and hay (and rare treats) until they are 6 months old, is this true?  If not, what type of veggies do you suggest? And how much? I have a rare odd disease and can not eat veggies myself, so what do you recommend I buy her that I will not throw out any unused leftovers?

                Thanks so much!

The theory behind that is that you are supposed to give them what mom was eating when she was pregnant and nursing and most rabbits who come from breeders have this diet – basically you are wanting to mimic the mom’s diet.

At 12 weeks the House Rabbit Society says you should start introducing vegetables so she is at the age when you can and should start slowing introducing vegetables – I would start with a small amount – maybe some sprigs of parsley or a romaine leaf for the first vegetable. You can get one small bunch of the parsley so it won’t go to waste. I find that the packaged romaine hearts last me a good while so you might try those as well but just start with one.
