Tomorrow he is getting neutered.. My poor sweet bunny.  He goes in at 8am, and I do not get my baby back until the next day at 4pm! I am sure it will go well, I have full faith.. but he is my baby.  Got any suggestions.  How to make this smoother for him.  I can’t imagine trying to get him out of his cage into the carrier without food.  He will do anything for food, but hates to be  picked up.  He is going to be so mad no food or water after midnight.  Does that mean I have to clean his cage out at 11:30 pm? I usually go to bed at 9pm.  I hate to starve him until his surgery.

Oh suggestions please..

Has your vet told you nil by mouth? I personally would clarify that – I have never heard of rabbits requiring being starved before anaesthetic and am not sure its a good thing.

Thank you grumphybun, for your reply. I called the vet back, and then actually ask the vet assistant to check with the vet. And wahoo you were correct Not the vet assistant. Thank you so much. I just want my Izzy to be as comfortable as possible and not starving, and staying safe at the same time is what is best. Thank you, thank you..

We were worried when Bumblebunny was done, however he came through fine. The vet used glue and dissolving stitches and what he called a long lasting pain med. Some vets may give you pain meds–best to ask. The vet also called the next morning to ask about his behavior. When he got home bunny was not happy. He just stayed in his bed for several hours without moving around much and we just sat with him. We put some of his favorite veggies in a bowl near him and after about 4-5 hours he started to nibble and by the next morning was eating normally. We did remove all the levels in his home so he could not jump around and also limited his activity for a few days. You can check the surgery site by offering a treat and seeing if he will stand up on his hind legs. It is amazing how fast they seem to recover.

June had to wear a cone. He was pissed. Fresh yummy herbs help. Also try putting a little of his pain meds on a front paw so he will lick it off. I totally understand the nerves, but Izzy should be ok. Grumpy but what else is new with buns.

Carrot baby food and apple sauce help too. When nothing else works bribery does.

My boys didn’t even notice anything was missing – they were a bit dozy for about 24 hours but they nibbled and drank just fine. One long lasting pain med was all they needed.

Be cautious with the cone if he’s given one. Only have him wear it if he’s picking at his wound – buns don’t get on with them very well, so it’s best to avoid it if you possibly can.

I’m sure he will be fine – best of luck! No harm in a nice bit of food for when he comes home

Izzy did fine.. The vet wanted me to leave him in his cage for 5 days after the surgery, but Izzy was getting anxious being locked up. The first 24 hrs home he was not a happy camper but was physically fine. pooping and eating (although less) fine. By day 2 home Izzy was downright angry being trapped in his cage, he was used to be out 3-4 hrs a day. Finally he decided, running and jumping around his cage was the best way to express his displeasure. Afraid he was going to hurt himself I called the vet, and she said if he was eating, pooing, peeing, and moving fine let him out before he became too anxious. Once out, oh Izzy was happy.

But, I am not sure if he is still expressing his anger or what, what he has turned into a major chewer. On anything he can get ahold, including his plastic litter pan! I have cardboard boxes for his chewing, but its not enough.

So, physically he is great, mentally is running loose in the house. But he is hearing NO! a lot!

Many recently neutered buns go a bit nutty – I think it’s the hormones still raging. He’ll settle down soon!

Was the vet assistant just unaware about not fasting rabbits? It’s a good example of misinformation really. Just staff being unaware, not the vet. It’d be good if all staff were clear on differences with rabbits v’s cats&dogs. Not all clients would have called to clarify like you did.
