My 2 y.o. neutered male lop and I have been moving around quite a bit lately. In apartment 1, I had a mattress on the ground which he never even came close to. He pooped almost exclusively in his litter box, but peed on the rug a couple times a week. In apartment 2, he loved hopping up on my bed. He peed on the bed quite a bit, then stopped, then started up again all on his own. All poops still in the litter box. Now we’re in apartment 3 and he loves hanging out on the bed and cuddling. Everything was great for a day or two after moving in, and then he suddenly started pooping on the bed. Not a stray poop here and there, but whole bunches. I left for a day and a half (don’t worry, he was fed!) and came back to 50+ poops on my bed and a couple of fresh pee stains.

What is happening?! And what can I do? I can’t block off access to the bed because he lives in my bedroom and doesn’t have a cage. I tried asserting my dominance by gently pushing down on him but that didn’t change the behavior. More recently I’ve been removing him from the bed when it happens, but he hates being picked up so now he’s just angry and scared of me. Please help us enjoy cuddles in bed again!

Lots of bunnies like to pee on beds – really the best solution is to block the bed off.

Asserting dominance with bunnies by pushing their heads down is a myth – it won’t work and will just upset him.

Since it happened while you were away for a day and a half (which really isn’t very safe even if he does have food), it could be that he was lonely and was expressing annoyance?

They’re like babies, they DO know the difference between a scarey sounding “no” and a higher pitched “good boy”… that’s if you catch them in the act !!
I would propose cornering him off with litter box in area and enlarging gradually the area….
Other than that, waterproof your bed or have cuddles on the floor….
