its only may and the temp is already hitting 90 degrees. i’m afraid we are going to have a really bad summer. Shadow is already starting to breath hard rest more.i’ve been thinking about moving him to the basement of my house but he HATES it down there. its way cooler but its also dark and quiet. its an extreem change of envirnment because he normally lives in my Sun room with my dog. i live in a ranch house with a total of 7 people and a dog. my bun isnt used to being alone. the last time i moved him to the basement he nearly starved himself to death. i had to give him medicine and force feed him until he started eating on his own again. really done want him to go through that again. what should i do? hes survived the summer countless times before but with every year he gets a bit older…. ![]()
Can you buy an AC unit that just cools your room? Let me go look them up, just a sec ![]()
Okay what about something like this – it’s not terribly expensive and you could shop around more for something more to your liking. My grandparents had a separate AC like this for their master bedroom to make it even cooler for my grandma. They lived in Hawaii. It was REALLY nice and cool and very comfy in that room.

there are no windows in the sun room XD
just a sun room and a door LOL. we have air conditioner but my parents dont turn it on unless the heat gets unbearable. they say the electric bill is too high
They make ones that just stand up too

If your dog and rabbit have to deal with the heat and it’s THAT bad – I bet you could come up with something to make the power bill even out.
We unplugged the refrigerator and freezer we had in our garage that we were pretty much not using and it knocked almost 100 bucks off the power bill. Maybe there is something in your home you could do without for the summer. I’ve lost pets before to the heat, and for something we are now in control of not happening, it’s not fair for peoples pets to die in the heat. I am rather sensitive to this because my mom killed one of my chinchillas to the heat while I was away at college and I will never forgive her for it. Such carelessness on her part and how lazy she was to move them outside and think it would all be okay. I don’t even want to get into it I am still so pissed about it even after 4 years.
I live in a 2 story house with no AC. I feel your pain and I am considering getting a stand up unit for my room this summer just because
A. I deserve it
B. My bunnies and fish tank deserve it as well.
aw i’m sorry for your loss. thats poor chinchilla
yeah your right the pets dont deserve to suffer. i’ll look into that AC. we also have a second fridge and freezer in the garage but we need those. um i think my dad has a fridge plugged in the the basement that he doesnt use. i’ll have to check that out too.
Our fridge and freezer were SUPER old. They were sucking out a ton of energy. I bet it would help to unplug that one if it’s not in use. At least you do have the basement if the AC thing falls through so you won’t have to leave him in the heat – even if he hates it, its better than melting in the sun!
Oh another thought if you do have to move him downstairs , what about those lights that are like fake sunlight? I thought I saw a post about them here somewhere. Those could be another answer. I was considering them for my room (after more research) because the back of my room goes into the hill, so my windows are actually at ground level which makes very little light unless I open my door and open the windows in the front of my house.
Agreed with trying to make the basement look more appealing. Are there any of those teensie high up windows in your basement? If so, put him near one. Then maybe put a little TV and a nice chair down there, and spend as much time down there as possible so bun isn’t feeling forgotten or anything. If there’s no window, maybe bring down a few lamps and turn them on so it’s nicely well-lit during the day.
Not sure where you live because in New York, bathrooms are still somewhat cold. You can take your rabbit to the bathroom. put him/her on titles and it will help him to cool off.
thank you for the advice everyone. i talked to my mom about the issue and she assured me that she wont let the animals burn up this summer. the basement is very homely to begin with. theres a TV, carpet, sofa, and even a bookshelf down there. it’d look just like a living room if it wasnt for the lack of light. i’ve never heard of those “fake light” lamps so i’ll have to look into them :3
@Taurus i used to live in New York. now that you mentioned it the bathrooms were pretty cool. cant say the same for the ones in Delaware. they are the same temp as the rest of the house
I’m experiencing some high heat (for Alaska) this summer too. (Lots of wildfires in our area as well, which makes it hard to open windows with all the smoke.)
Empty pop bottles with water frozen inside them is good for you bunny to lie near, plus plenty of water in crocks and bottles. I keep mine in the refrigerator so the water is cold when they need it the most.
Also a damp towel stuck in the freezer for awhile and then draped over the pen with a fan blowing by it (never directly on the bunny) is good for keeping them cool.
You can also sometimes spritz their ears with a little water from a squirt bottle (as long as you do not already use this method for a deterrent to behavior problems) since their body heat evaporates through the skin on their ears.
Frozen fruit like blueberries or strawberries are a nice treat for bunnies.
Keep him well brushed as well, since he’s likely to blow his coat if it’s getting too warm for him. My three just finished a huge shed and now are going through another due to the increased heat. >.< They're going to be positively naked within a month, I'm certain of it!
Ahh to be a bunny.
I’m envious of them, able to run around naked in the summer, and not get arrested… it’s too hot for most clothing when you dont have AC >.<
Sorry I did a terrible job describing those lights. They mimic the sun, I actually have them in my fish tank because I had sea anemones and was trying to grow seaweed in there. I heard they make some for humans and that there were studies that people are happier in sunlight so I wanted to look into it.
Mimz – I am trying to hold back Bee from seeing she NEEDS frozen blueberries and strawberries to stay cool this summer hehe. She’s such a piggy lately!
