Peppy had “her” first vet visit today and turned out to be a healthy little boy!   I knew it was a possiblilty, but I guess I didn’t prepare my daughter. She handled it well, even though she was pretty surprised.   Peppy got a carrot and some extra kisses for being so good for Dr. King.

I was pleased with the vet – she seemed very knowledgable.  She said all the right things about bunny care, including not fasting him before neutering, which she said we could do any time.  We will probably wait another month or so – the kids are going to camp and then we’re going on vacation, so he’ll need some time to settle back in. The only thing that concerned me was that she doesn’t send them home with pain meds after the neuter.  He’ll get a shot which will last the rest of the day and she expects he’ll be back to normal the day after the surgery.  Does this sound right to those of you who’ve been through this before?

Yes that sounds fine. We suggest that you request a dose or so of pain meds to take home anyway. Many of the vets don’t bother (you pay for it) but will give you some with a syringe if you ask for it. Other vets just do so automatically.

A boy recovers more quickly from a successful procedure than a girl, and the risk is from jumping around normally and pulling stitches from feeling fine soon, rather than not. Remove any platforms temporarily for the week after and don’t allow jumping up on couches or chairs, etc. That will help.

Congratulations on having a boy bunny! Another mystery solved.

Yes, for neuters they seem to bounce back pretty fast.

Our dog’s neuter went that way – he didn’t seem to notice at all! I’ll be sure to ask for the pain meds just in case.

My rabbits have all come “pre-neutered,” so to speak, but my mom’s rabbit bounced back very quickly from his neuter. He was sort of groggy when we got him, but was basically normal by the next day– he actually refused the second dose of pain meds he was sent home with. Anyway, congrats on your boy, and good luck on the surgery!

Pain meds are not always necessary following a male neuter. They are necessary after a female spay since this is a more invasive surgery. If your vet is close, maybe try with no pain meds. You could always call and ask for some and then drive to pick them up. If your vet is farther away, you might want to get them after the surgery, just in case to save yourself a second trip.
