So long story short my friend bought bunnys for her son and now does not want them. So I basically took them, she told me they wer both boys and gave me the run down. Well after having them for like two months turns out one was a girl! I had them both in the cage she gave me but that was way to small and I let them out to have roaming time. But I look up on youtube for Ideas and this is what I was got. Excuse the boxes in the front the small babies can fit through -.-. What can I put down to help protect my carpet? they are not litter box trained yet I am working on it. But underneath I have puppy pads and a card board box then the blanket. I noticed the male likes to dig and chew the card board box. ( in process of getting him fixed). Thank you for all the help I am a new bunny mommy and I wanna do this right

Hi Bambii It’s a great thing you have done taking on these bunnies. Unfortunately something seems to have gone wrong with your image files that you have uploaded, I tried to insert them for you but I suspect that perhaps the file name isn’t allowing it to upload properly, but I’m not sure on that.

I’m assuming the female has given birth? Do you still have the male and female together? If so you will need to separate them otherwise she could likely already be pregnant again.

In regards to protecting carpet, if you have them in a pen, a sturdy plastic sheet can protect your carpet but it will need to be the vinyl type plastic and will need to extend beyond the edges of the playpen so that they can’t pull it up. You can also use cut to measure lino, foam puzzle mats etc. The puppy pads will work for now, however you will need to keep a close eye out for signs of chewing, as ingestion of those can be very dangerous.

Litter box training will also be easier if you have them desexed, while it is possible to litter box train intact rabbits, they are more likely to miss on occasion. Once you have your male neutered, you’ll still need to keep him separate from the doe as he can still get her pregnant for some weeks after. Probably best to re-bond them once the kits have been weaned, though you may not have much luck without spaying the doe as well.

I hope I have been of some help, I can imagine you must have your hands full with these new bunnies that aren’t yet litter trained and now babies as well!

Yes I most certainly do but i am trying. Yes I have them both separated I used the wire storage crates to make a 2X6 cage with a middle separator. I am going to get them desexed one at a time due to funding but it will get done. I believe I uploaded the images in a album of the cage. Yea what I did was i duct taped the puppy pads to the cardboard and then duct taped that to the blanket so they would have to chew a hole in the blanket to get to the puppy pads. Keep in mind trying to do this with two toddlers under five was well super hard.

Sounds like you have things well under control. Just watch out for chewing of the duct tape too, as you don’t want them to ingest any of it. In regards the divided playpen, it sounds great although I might recommend to have a solid divider, or a double divider with an inch or two gap in between because cheeky bunnies have been known to mate through bars.

Haha, yes, I’m afraid so I don’t think it will always happen, but it does happen. Sexing babies is difficult, and I don’t think it’s easily done until they’re about 6 weeks or so. I would suggest a vet to do it but even vets get it wrong. There are pictures and guides online for helping to sex rabbits though, and you can always look at your male and female and compare them to the kits, so at least you know you have a definite reference in person for each one, which can be more helpful than looking at photos at times. The good thing is though you don’t need to separate the kits until they’re 10 weeks of age, so you have time to figure that out Here’s one site with some good images: http://www.raising-rabbits.com/sexing-rabbits.html

Looking good, sorry to hear about the dad but at least you’re still taking good care of mum and babies. Is she using the ramp up to the ledge? I suspect it may be too slippery if made of coroplast and you could just have the ledge, without the ramp and she should be able to jump up to it quite easily.

Yes the hubby made that But I quickly took it out suspecting the same thing. I did put a blanket on the ledge, this is temporary for now because I ordered more grids. Yea I am bumed about the dad but it was their bunny and to resolve it without drama i told them they can have him but I am keeping the mom and with a bunch of arguing later I was able to keep the mom and the babies. I have been homing them but I have been requiring people fill out a questionnaire to see if they know much about bunnys (helps weed out the ones that want them temporary). but her cage is a work in progress but she roams for the most part of the day. she is only caged when I am running errands or at work.
