Hi guys! Found a mix from the store that’s kind of like spring mix but with less variety and hardly any spinach. It has arugula, mizuna, a variety of lettuces and spinach. I picked all of the spinach out when I was washing it and made a yummy green smoothie. I was under the impression that arugula was high in calcium but I haven’t been able to find anything about that anywhere. Is this combination safe to feed daily? I gave them some today and yesterday about have the mix and half green leaf, but I’m running out of green leaf and it’s getting crazy expensive, and the quality sucks 🙁 .

        Thanks guys!

Arugula is fine to feed every day. What’s mizuna? Is that mustard greens? Those are high in oxalic acid.

Darn I think it is 🙁 . :sigh: I tried to pick all of it out of the mix, I should have gotten most of it. Is this okay to feed for the next few days until I can get more veggies?

I think it’s fine!  Veggies with high calcium and oxalate are fine to feed in rotation, and even one week of maybe too much of one thing isn’t the end of the world, it’s more of a cumulative thing.

Since arugula is low oxalate and the mizuna is higher, that’s still only 1 high oxalate veg, so that’s a good combo. Mustard greens/mizuna are also high in vitamin A, which is a good thing. 🙂

The calcium debate is interesting. Rabbits do need a lot of calcium and excrete excess in their urine. Usually you only need to worry about calcium if your bun is prone to sludge or has had kidney issues. I’ve also noticed personally that veggies like kale seem to produce more sludge than other high calcium veggies. Maybe just because kale tends to be a lot more voluminous. At the shelter we definitely notice more calcium in urine when we feed a lot of kale.

So if you were concerned about calcium you could keep an eye on her urine output and make sure it’s nice and liquid.

usually the quantity in these mixes of mizuna is pretty low too, so I totally agree with @DanaNM. Even a few spinach leaves are not going to hurt your bun unless they are sensitive. From everything I have read making sure you have a good variety is the best course of action as then you get a more balanced nutritional profile and is closer to what they would naturally eat.
