Hi all! Today I rescued a bunny from a terrible living situation and set up a quarantine space for him in our spare bathroom, but it might not work out because my dog won’t stop screaming at the door because he gets weirdly fixated on things. The screams sound like he’s being tortured and it’s scaring the cotton-tail residents. I was thinking of just moving the new bun (who I named Fresno) to the bunny room where there are two spayed girls, and he is a (supposedly, I haven’t checked yet) unaltered male. They would not be out together. Should it come to this, is it safe to do? Is there much to worry about regarding him spreading an illness to the others? Would putting him in the room while he’s unaltered affect a possible bonding process in the future after he’s been neutered?

Oh, poor bub! Thank you for taking him in!

If your dog is screaming and wont stop, the situation is intolerable, of course.

If you are in an area where there is RVHD2, housing the new rabbit in the same room as the other rabbits would pose a risk. This disease is highly contagious. I dont see that you have much choice though, given the dog-situation.

There are several parasites that could spread between the rabbits, both parasites that live on the skin and internal parasites. Has he been seen by a vet? A vet can prescribe Revolution (selamectin), which is the best and safest anti-parasitic for rabbits. (And while were on the subject, a public service message that we always give: Never use any compound containing fipronil on a rabbit. Fipronil is sold OTC for dogs and cats, under a whole host of brand names (Frontline is a common one). It is deadly toxic to rabbits. End of public service message.)

Don’t let the other rabbits come into contact with new bunny directly nor with his pee or poop. If you can, set up some form of barrier between the cages to prevent particles from floating freely between the cages. A bed sheet, blanket etc if it’s not possible to make a hard barrier.

Wash your hands when you’ve handled new rabbit, before you do anything with your other rabbits, even refill food, hay or water.

This bun is very lucky to have been rescued. Thank you again 💗

Thank you so much for rescuing him, he looks pitiful, I can’t imagine what he must have endured. You saved his life.

Bam gave great advice. There are many nasty diseases and parasites that could spread between them, personally I wouldn’t risk it. I think the best and simplest solution would be to focus on your dog, remove him from the situation and don’t allow him to get fixated on it. It might take a little tough love but in the end it will be good for the rabbits as well as him, it sounds like he’s whipping himself into a frenzy and causing himself a ton of stress.

Thanks guys. I’m trying to correct my dog instead but he’s an old, deaf, half blind, and stubborn guy so it’s been a pain in the butt lol. Fresno was kept outside in a dog crate with no shelter from the rain and we get really bad storms here in Florida. When you pet him all you feel is his spine, ribs, and hip bones. He’s such a sweet boy and despite never being potty trained he peed in his litter box right away! I feel like the odds of him having some kind of parasites must be fairly high because of where he was. I’ll try my best to keep him in his quarantine area and will be taking him to the vet hopefully tomorrow, fingers crossed!

Poor Fresno, I don’t understand how people can be so cruel. How did you come across him?

                    Bam – Will do!

Hazel – craigslist. They were advertising him as a breeding buck and the pictures they had of him were abysmal. They supposedly bought him from a livestock auction to “give him a better life” but if the way he was living was a good life to them I don’t want to know what a bad life is… I didn’t want him to end up in another bad situation. 💕

Wow, I don’t even know what to say to that. To think that someone would put a clearly neglected animal on Craigslist, not even worrying about possibly getting in legal trouble is just unbelievable. And then having the gall to say they were giving him a “better” life? People make me sick. 😡

Hazel – Agreed. A report was made to animal services so hopefully they do a home check to make sure they don’t have any more neglected animals on the property.

Glad to hear it, nice going kanin! Lets hope they don’t have any other animals. If they do they need to be removed from their “care”.

Fresno is very lucky you found him, he probably thinks he won the lottery! 🙂
