is my rabbit… actually a…. holland lop?

when i adopted him from a rescue i was told that he was a holland lop but he really looks like a mini lop… (when i visited there was another rabbit that was an actual holland lop and he looked totally different compared to my rabbit)

so i just said that he was a mini lop. but he is around 6 months old and 3 and 1/2 lbs… i know that rabbits stop growing at 6 months and i highly doubt that he will gain 3 more lbs especially since he should not grow that much anymore? his face is oval and not round. his ears are skinnier than a normal holland lop ears and they are a tad longer than a holland lop’s ear. his head seems to be small in comparison to his body.

What a cutie! You know, it’s sort of hard to tell from the pictures. Is his face really that long or is it the broken pattern creating an optical illusion?

I’m trying to find a good pic of Leopold. He is for sure a Holland lop, so maybe we can compare?

BTW, Leopold weighs about 4 lbs.

hm you have a point! the broken markings may be creating some optical illusion… but his face does look more oval than a normal holland lops face and awww your rabbit is so cute! and hmmm in the first he really does look like my bunny.

but what i’ve noticed was that he doesnt have a “flat” nose/ face. his nose is pointy-ish rather than flat like a hollands nose.

the only thing different between your rabbit and mine is that my rabbits nose is pointier.. thats about it. maybe a TAD bit more oval but not that much

Def a Holland. He’s at prime weight, rabbits reach full growth at 6 months, 3 1/2 lbs would be a holland, a mini would be closer to 5/6lbs. His ears also reach past his chin, which mini’s stop just at the chin.

oh really sam? i thought it was the other way around! (with the ears) because i saw on youtube this gray mini lop eating parsley and her ears were past her chin and she was a mini lop ;o

@ roberta, thanks for the pic! but my rabbits face isnt as round and his nose isnt flat. and his nose is quite “small”. and my rabbits head is small compared to his body… and im pretty sure hes not over weight! lol

It could be that whoever bred him, some gene in either parent was expressed and is shown in his phenotype, like his nose being a tad different than the breed standard of a Holland Lop. But he looks Holland to me.

I wouldn’t worry about the head shape, that can be affected by many things, including different breeding. Not all lops are standard show quality, either, so there can be some variance in ear length and head shape, however there wont be in weight. If you had a mini, he would be closer to 5-6lbs by now. Since hes a healthy 3.5, hes definitely a holland. And a super cute holland at that

I think he’s a Holland. The others are right, sometimes they can vary a bit and not display the breed’s standard characteristics.

ahh that makes sense, tipsy! and aw thanks sam ! so its NOT possible that a mini lop can weigh 3 and 1/2 lbs at 6 months of age? on his adoption paper she said that he weigh “approx 3lbs” and when i visited him i also held an actual holland lop and they were both the same weight (or so it seems!)

No, its not possible, he’d be pretty emaciated. Head shape isn’t a part of determining breed. Why don’t you want him to be a holland lop?

oh okay, and no its fine if hes a holland lop! holland lops are adorable, in fact i’ve always wanted a holland but they didnt have any in the rescue group i was adopting from. (except for him and the other rabbit that i visited; the one with malocclusion) but i just want to be sure lol… thanks

At his size, he’s definitely holland – minis aren’t that small. Not all bunnies are going to look like those bred for show – it’s very common to have a non-show quality holland whose face looks more like a mini lop so at that point you just have to base it on weight.

Huh weird! When I asked about my lop here on BB I was told that she wasn’t a Holland because of her face and ears, even though she weighs 3 pounds. Bleh rabbit breeds are confusing.

I spent alot of my time learning about different bunny breeds when i was first looking for first house bun here. it’s amazing how different they can be, but have similar traits hen not “perfect” show bunnies.

Actually I was incorrect, both Holland and Mini should have an ear length of 1/2 to 1in past the chin. So it really depends on weight then, to differentiate. Any length shorter or longer doesn’t mean its not a lop, just not the breed “standard” or whatever. I personally love the longer ears <3

My bud is a black tortioseshell holland lop..which i know of a few buns on here are.

I have always had a soft spot for lops.

she’s a holland lop and weighs 4.5 lbs..My other holland weighs 3.  They can definitely vary quite a bit.  And they’re both pure bred.  Either way, you’re bun is adorable   And I’m completely biased because I love lops…

I have also noticed lots of people breeding holland lops with other dwarf breeds. I had a mini lop and he looked identical to my holland lop, just twice his size! I also just rescued a lop who is slightly larger then my holland lop, but has a very pointy face, so its possible that she has some other kind of rabbit in her, though the spca said she was an american fuzzy lop (definitely not though!) because thats what her previous owners said she and her family was. I think that a lot of rabbits just haven’t been bred with “show quality” in mind. But they’re still all cute!

ohhh yeah, he most likely is a mix. and yeah i guess (: i honestly dont know how much he weighs exactly (but im going to check today) the rescue said that he weigh 3 and 1/2 lbs and i havent held him yet because he wont let me pick him up

I dunno, I would just say holland lop. I’ve seen plenty who look just like him – he doesn’t look like a show bred holland, but there are a ton of non-show bred holland out there. His face looks very similar to my holland’s except for the slightly longer nose and ears which isn’t much variation at all.

oh alright then! i re-weighed him yesterday and turns out he actually weighs 4.2lbs which is how much a holland lop should weigh.

4.2lb is on the big end for a holland. It’s possible that he’s a holland at that weight, but it also overlaps with mini lop weights, so now it’s hard to tell! Haha.

I checked my records..and Oreo was 4 lbs @ 6 months old… And like I said, I am sure she is pure holland lop. She’s now about 4.6 and has been the same for the past year and a half… Just my 2cents! Everyone thinks she’s a boy because she’s so much bigger than Blu…

Show quality. Oh my.

That is why I have my Chacha bun.

She is a Netherland Dwarf, but a 4 pound one She tops the scale, and isn’t the typical 2 pounder! She has longer ears, bigger booty, long limbs compared to the show quality dwarf. She doesn’t have a smooshed face that dwarfs have.

It is quite interesting as to what is ‘show’ quality and what isn’t. Either way, both make really damn good pets
