I just got Hedwig a week ago. He’s 10 weeks old and he’s my first rabbit.

I can’t tell if the pulsing I see is his breathing or heart rate, but it freaked me out the first time because it was so fast. I thought maybe he was just stressed since he’s so young and in a strange new environment. But even when he warmed up to me and was relaxing after playing around happily, I could still see him pulsing/breathing so fast. Is this just the norm for rabbits?

Rabbits’ heart beat and breathing is generally more rapid than you might expect, and becomes even more rapid under stress or when it’s warm. Plus most mammal babies have faster beats than their grownup counterparts. So it looks normal to me.

Seems normal to me. Bunnies do have quite fast resting heart rates. As we age, heart rate decreases. So young bunnies beat especially fast.

no worries! (Also I love the name Hedwig! Harry Potter inspired?)

I was also worried about their heart rate at first. I came across this which was very helpful for me:

                  http://rabbit.org/temperature-and-respiration-rates/

I check respiration by watching chest cavity movement. They say you can check by feeling breath from the nose, but I haven’t been very successful with that method! “Was that a breath or … no? wait yes… or .. no?” hahaha.
