Storm is now 4 months old and weighs ~3 lbs (1.36 kg). According to the breeder her mom weighs about 2.5 lbs and dad weighs 3.5 lbs. Is it time to start reducing the amount of pellets to only a 1/4 cup once a day or should I continue with the current amount of 1/4 cup in the morning and 1/4 cup when I get home from work?

          Hi!
It depends on what your vet says. Do you have a picture of him? he still seems like a baby and might still have some baby fat on him.

Mine were 3 pounds at 4 months and now they’re about 4.5 pounds. They’re false dwarves, which is something you might need to consider if she’s already that size. I didn’t decrease until 6 months. Now they only get two tablespoons a day. But it honesty couldn’t hurt to lower it to a third.

I personally think 1/4 cup daily is plenty for a 3lb rabbit, even one that is still growing.

In my experience, no harm in trying to limit. In no world will the rabbit shrink to an unhealthy weight so rapidly you wouldn’t notice, so try it out and keep monitoring weight and health as usual. Wick was limited at around 3 months old because the high calcium didn’t agree with him, but it was obvious he wasn’t gaining weight/maintaining healthy weight, so no harm no foul. We bumped up his diet and bam, he’s all good!

Just out of curiosity but why does no one recommend going with the recommended servings according to the Oxbow bag?

If I reduce Storm’s pellets now, do I run the risk of her not reaching her healthy weight when she stops growing?

I assume it’s because the companies have a vested interest in you using more than is necessary.

In the wild rabbits grow to a healthy weight without pellets at all, so I can’t see how a rabbit won’t grow to a healthy weight because you’ve reduced their pellets slightly.
