  Hi all. I am new here, and I just had my bun for about 4 days now. I was wondering, is it ok to give fresh picked grass and weeds? Along with the hay of course. Also, I found an ad in the newspaper that has a bale of grass hay for $3.25. Can I give grass hay instead of timothy hay? I know when I feed the fresh grass to my guinea pigs there coat has gotten so much shinier and smooth, I didn’t know if it was ok to add that to my bun’s diet. By the way, thank you so much on the other topics about not giving carrots. I didn’t know that.

  As for fresh grass, as long as there are no pesticides this is good to give rabbits. I would start out in small quantities though as with anything. As for weeds, dandelion greens are good. Rabbits in the wild eat fresh grass, that’s how they survive.

  Geez, I feel foolish. I didn’t know that timothy hay was grass hay. I guess i just assumed that they was different…LOL Anyway, I didn’t figure it would hurt to give them fresh grass. I know that’s what they eat in the wild, but i just wanted to make sure before I did it. Thanks for the quick response.

  There are different hays out there that are good to feed buns. Meadow hay Orchard hay and Brome hay are what I remember seeing at the pet store. Some bunnies are finicky about their hay and refuse to eat Timothy. So the owner will feed one of these other hays.

  Just be very careful with the fresh grass that you select and you will be fine. I live in a subdivision and we do not treat our yard with pesticides, fertilizer and all the junk just the have the greenest lushest lawn that needs to be mowed more often- but our neighbors treat their yard like they have something to prove- they even walk around and HAND WEED anything that the chemicals have not eliminated. And of course they mow in 2 directions ot have a crosshatch pattern on the grass after mowing. In a nutshell they are insane and insane about their lawn. And I won’t feed grass from our yard on the small chance that their chemicals have spread to our yard thru wind or water.
  
  My parents have a huge yard with no close neighbors- and from there I have gotten apple branches and clover (grows as a weed) that I know for sure have not been treated and neighbors are not close enough to affect their lawn. But if you live at an apartment or have a small yard (live in a subdivision, etc) I think you are better safe than sorry.
