Hey. So I got my bun spayed 3 days ago. She has her hutch in my living room I may have made a rod for my own back here but her behaviour has always been a bit like well now you’ve let me have a bit I want more. And I’ve let her she now has the whole living room to run and now I genuinely believe she thinks we’re in her house. Since she was spayed she’s become worse as in chewing more things and banging her door till I let her out. I’ve tried to ignore the behaviour in the hope it will subside but she’ll just demolish the hutch I reckon. She’s got tons of toys but has never really been bothered by toys. Not only that when she went for her op they said bring food I read how important it is to eat straight after so I sent her with everything fruit veg hay pellets treats you name it she had it. She never really had too much veg (as I’m  typing this I’ve just had to rescue her from the back of my sofa she jumped from the floor to the back of the sofa thought she was landing on something else and fell down the back) she always has had hay and pellets and a bit of veg and fruit. Since coming home she will only drink water if I try to force it and even then sometimes she’ll just push it right back at me, I left her a bowl of water and she didn’t really care for that either. I don’t know if the soaked veg she’s been having since her op is giving her enough water. She is going to the toilet but not as much as before. she was always drinking before and now she’s just not bothered apart from the naughty behaviour which is normal apart from the extra naughty business she’s been displaying at the moment she seems fine in herself she’s eating fine and I’ve noticed 2 wees today and is pooing ok. I don’t know if I’m being so paranoid about it or not. Today I thought maybe I’ll just give her the amount of veg she had before, in the hope of her drinking water again but then I was so worried and felt bad about her not getting enough water I gave her more soaked veg again. I feel like a bad bunny mum now checking on her all the time I’m probably getting on her nerves. 🥴

          Hi there,

Sorry if I am not following, but it is important to restrict her space and prevent her from jumping up on things while her spay heals. Most vets will have buns on cage rest for 10-14 days after spaying.

It is important that she eats. I don’t quite follow from your post whether she is eating on her own, but if she isn’t, you need to syringe feed her critical care or pellet mash. Did your vet give you pain medication for her?

It is normal for there to be behavior changes for up to 4-6 weeks after spaying as her hormones settle down. Most important for now is to make sure she heals correctly and keeps eating and pooping. The spay surgery is pretty invasive so she needs extra care.

As Dana said, she shouldn’t be jumping at all right now. If you let her jump on and off the couch she’s likely to bust her stitches or worse. She won’t like it but you have to restrict her movement or you’re going to end up back at the vet.

Hey yeh she is eating on her own it’s just the lack of water that I’m more worried about and wether the uptake of veg would account for this (I know I waffled). I have kept her contained up until today when she decided to jump over and out of her pen and land on the sofa next to me and it’s quite high sided I’m sure she’s part hare. The vet checked her yesterday said it’s healing nicely and I was ok to let her out. But yeh not to do some of the wild stuff she randomly does. But she’s never on her own and if I can catch her before she does stupid stuff I do but she just keeps banging on the side wanting to be in the whole space again. Part of me didn’t know if she wasn’t drinking that much because she was annoyed she was penned in. She’s got medicine it’s the only thing she’ll take without a fight. probably because it tastes sweet.

I wouldn’t worry about the lack of drinking if she’s getting wet veggies and as long as she’s peeing. If she isn’t eating a lot of hay she might not drink as much.

But you really do need to prevent her from jumping or running. Hanging a towel on the side of the pen might help her calm down a bit. And providing some extra boredom buster toys to work on.
