        Buttercup’s bald patch is filling in nicely but it’s still quite dry. I was using sudocrem but it didn’t seem to help so I thought I’d see if it would clear up on it’s own but no luck. Is coconut oil safe/recommended to use?

          It seems people use it on rabbits. I can’t find anything on PubMed about coconut oil on rabbit skin. There is however a pilot-study that deems virgin coconut oil safe for use as a re-wetting agent in rabbit eyes. That makes me think it would be safe for use on rabbit skin as well.

          The article says virgin coconut oil has anti-inflammatory properties.

            Thanks Bam. I couldn’t find anything specific regarding using it on rabbit skin so figured I’d ask here. Not sure whether to get some or wait to see the vet (this thurs) Her fur is really growing in fast and I don’t want the fur to just conceal the dryness

              I found this: http://www.centerchem.com/Products/DownloadFile.aspx?FileID=7148

              Skin Irritation:

              Undiluted coconut oil was applied to the skin of 9 rabbits by means of a 24-hour occlusive patch-test;
              no irritation was observed (Journal of the American College of Toxicology; 1986; vol.5, nr.3).

              9 rabbits are not a very large number though. It seems coconut oil and products containing it seems mostly to be tested directly on human volunteers, hence no need to go through the animal testing stage (since it’s not sold as a drug).

              In this article I found a mention of coconut oil helping with ear eczema in rats: http://www.healthline.com/health/coconut-oil-for-eczema “An animal study, reported in Pharmaceutical Biology, indicated that virgin coconut oil reduced fever, inflammation, and pain in rats with ear edema.” The article has a link to the study.

                I haven’t heard anything bad about using coconut oil topically. I know people have done it.
