Hi all,
I’ve been lurking on this site for a while and thought it was time I said hello! My name is Jess and I have an 8 mth old lop bun called Fred. Our story is as follows…
I have 2 kids, one is 2yrs and the other is in kinder. Last August the kinder participated in a rabbit-rearing program. This meant that a mummy bun who had just given birth was brought to the kinder so that the kids could watch the baby buns grow. (I now know how horrible this is…) Once the babies were 4 weeks old they were taken back to the “farm” to become petting zoo bunnies or parents could purchase them. (I know this is awful…but read on…) My son had been begging me for a rabiit so I decided to buy one of the buns. I had lots of animals around growing up but never a bunny so I had absolutely no idea about them…the plan was to have it live in a hutch at the back of the yard (!!)
So, that is how Freddy came to live with us at 4 weeks old. I was told by the “farmer” that he could go staright onto rabbit mix and didn’t need bunny milk anymore. Fred was very little so I decided to keep him inside with us until he grew. This is when I began to do research on rabbit care! Thanks to sites such as this one I learnt A LOT!! Also, having Freddy inside meant that we got to see his personality. I was so surprised that bunnies were so intelligent (he litter trained almost staright away) and so loving.
To cut to the chase…my research has led to Freddy being a house bunny with full run of the house (it’s only little and we are completely bunny-proofed) and he is off rabbit mix and eating a great diet. He is spayed, vaccinated (not for myxy because we can’t get it done here in Australia…another story…), and the entire family is completely in love with him. I have taught the children to never pick him up and to always be gentle. Fred is only ever locked in his cage (NIC cubes attached to a dog crate) overnight. I have a big outdoor run for him but often I sit outside and watch him run around the garden freely. H is like a dog and comes when I call him!
I am a stay at home mum so I am always around to spend time with him. Fred is very bonded to me and we share kisses every day. He is feisty and seems unafraid of anything. He chaes our two cats around the house and is completely at ease with kiddy screams/crying (prob because his early days were spent in a kinder!)
Thank goodness info was available online about bunny care or otherwise Freddy would be cooped up in a hutch outside or being tortured in a petting zoo!
So, here we are! Freddy is very glad I found you!

i love your story! it’s not the ideal fate for those poor baby buns, but at least Fred was able to get a wonderful (pampered) home with your family! i’m so pleased you chose to keep him inside with you… there’s nothing like a bun in your home!
He’s GORGEOUS!!! And what a truly heartwarming story!! I love it!!
I seriously love the idea of free range bunnies!! Great job!! Welcome!!
A big bunny welcome to you and Fred. He is very handsome.
Welcome! Freddy is adorable, I want to kiss that sweet mug of his!
Thank you for giving him a loving home!
Welcome, Freddy is quite handsome ![]()
Thanks for all the lovely welcomes! I do kiss Freddy’s sweet lil mug a lot!
It is sad to think of his poor brothers and sisters ending up in petting zoos, as I know that animals (particularly buns) have a very limited lifetime in that situation. I never let my kids go into them. Apparantly many of the baby animals die of stress after the first session. They should be outlawed IMHO.
awww! Freddy is cute!
(Thanks for compliments to Fred…I’ve been admiring all your bunnies for ages!)
