› FORUM › HOUSE RABBIT Q & A › Internet Hay in Canada?
A lot of you here have mentioned you order hay online and get really great quality. I would love to try this but I’ve yet to find any Canadian companies who do this or any that will ship to Canada at a reasonable price. Does anyone know of any companies I could look into?
Aren’t there any farms near you?
Oh are you like me & don’t drive? I bug my bro to drive me & found ads on Kijiji selling horse hay.
I couldn’t find any at all, none to ship up here either. Now I stock up with local hay like a small farm operation before winter.
I’m really fussy with bunny hay. I’ve tried numerous horse hays and am not happy with them. I have a horse but her hay comes in like 100lb bales so I can’t buy from the stable. There is a local farm who sells hay for small animals but I tried it and it is really gross and smells like cows. Bindi would be appalled if I tried to feed him that!
Most online stores I’ve tried are going to cost me at least $20.00 to ship a small bag that costs under $10.00. I can’t justify spending more on shipping than the product.
I’ve heard that American Pet Diner hay is the absolute best and I would really like to try it. It’s ridiculous, Canada is huge but all the companies are in the US. ![]()
I hear you, LPT. I feel like that about many companies that won’t ship to or do not exist in Canada or when the shipping cost is just disproportionate. i guess we’re a big place, Canada, but have few people.
Bovine-scented hay? Haha, that reminds me: one time I got such a batch — my dog instantly went to pee on it! It wqas cheap so I got rid of it.
I can get horse hay here that is good now, but I only know one guy who has the good stuff. I only buy it if I can see it first. That’s my rule now.
But why can’t you use your horse’s hay? You have a few rabbits, don’t you? I have 140 lbs hay at my house now and it is being eaten fast by my four.
Vancouver Rabbit Rescue apparently carries Oxbow:
And here for Oxbow on-line:

You could email American Pet Diner to see if they ship to Canada too – I think you would be pleased with their 2nd cut timothy. There’s some brown but it’s minimal – I think there will always be a litlte brown pieces no matter who you use.
Ha! Bindi would be appalled….
Yes, VRRA carries Oxbow but they’re not an online store, you have to go to their Vancouver shelter.
canadianpetconnection ships throughout Canada but the rates for me where I am in the North are out of my budget. A 50lbs box of hay costs $75 but shipping will be another 70 for me. LPT, it might be a better siituation for you. I just live too remotely.
edit: of course BB has hay online and ships to Canada now. ![]()
Yeah, even for me the shipping costs as much as the hay. I do a hay co-op thing with some of my friends through APD and the 25 pound box with the shipping cost us $49.00 a piece because they give us a 15% discount on the product for purchasing 500 lbs plus the break in shipping costs. Oxbow hay’s shipping is cheaper but I don’t like Oxbow hay (I like their pellets but not their hay).

Yeah, even for me the shipping costs as much as the hay. I do a hay co-op thing
that’s a great idea! For myself the local hay works, though. As long as I buy it when it’s available.
Sarita you still must have a huge hay bill.
I really should try to figure out how much hay I go through. The next time I open a box I’m going to to date it, if I remember to see how long it lasts. I did just buy three 45 pound boxes of the 3rd cut KMS hay though since it’s so nice. I usually stock up when the hay is good and green too.
I don’t buy pellets though or buy very little so that helps somewhat…my veggie bill is high though.
Ha! Bindi would be appalled….
lol, he is a fussy little bugger. If I’ve been with my horse and I come home and wash my hands, sometimes there is still a little horse smell lingering and he absolutely refuses to take treats from me if my hands smell funny.
I’ve tried Oxbow in all three sizes and have been happy with about 50% of the bags. The last bag I bought was pretty bad. My local pet store sells it but it’s still pretty pricey.
I’d rather spend more and order hay that I know I will like as I end up throwing out so much hay right now that the extra shipping costs might be worthwhile.
I just recently bought a bale of local hay (in NB), and so far am loving it. The buns couldn’t believe their eyes when they saw it. They would munch a bit, jump onto and off of it and then binky away before coming back for moire! It cost me $4.50, which I definitely can’t argue yet. I think it weighs somewhere around 40 lbs, so hopefully it will last a while. I don’t know if it would be good enough for Bindi, but my buns are satisfied! lol
Why don’t you buy 1/2 a bale from your stable?
I too have found nothing that ships to cananda ![]()
This company is an Oxbow distributor and also has online store. http://www.corico.ca/cart/index.php Not sure how economic it’d be though. And there’s always BinkyBunny.com ![]()
Jerseygirl, a.k.a. ‘International Rabbit Relations Correspondent.’ — *sigh*– don’t you wish you could make that your primary profession?
It IS your shtick, for sure!! (well, one of them… )
Haha! Jerseygirl IRRC. Does that mean that was a useful link? Other Titles: “Professional Googler” Or “Professional Time Waster”!![]()
Honestly, I just throw links “out there” and leave readers to discern if they’re useful or not.![]()
I like that: us rabbit people are in need of important associations to boost our status as ‘little bunny lovers’.
I can see business cards in the future… Jersey Girl. Esquire. I.R.R.C. — call to make an appointment if have long ears!
The hay that my horse eats comes wrapped in huge square bales. It’s a high moisture hay as it’s wrapped immediately after it’s cut. It’s a sweet grass and gets fermented if not eaten with a couple of days of being unwrapped so my buns would have to eat about 20lb a day.
I don’t think Olivia would mind, though, she’s a little hay piggie!
I’m trying over the next couple of weeks to keep all my store bought hay receipts to see how much I actually spend. It may be worth my while to get some shipped from the US. Gotta wait and see.
LPT, why don’t you try the canadianpetconnection (Sarita’s link above)? They’re in ON, and they guy was really agreeable to giving deals. They don’t just have Oxbow, but also another kind.
Just a note about oxbow. My vet orders it in for me and gives me their discounted vet price. Might be worth a try to ask your vet to get some in for you.
