Cut off as much hair as you can around the wound, although the hair is very short on the picture so you might have to skip that step. Clean the would with povidone-iodine or just diluted iodine, some buns’ skin react negatively to chlorhexidine, but it’s often used with rabbits. I don’t know what you can get in Latvia, of course, it varies so much between countries. Hydrogen peroxide is not recommended these days though, because it can delay wound healing.

Dab dry with something very clean, like a fresh compress. Then you can put antibiotic cream on the sore. Fucidine cream can be used, silver sulfadiazine cream can also be used.

If there is an infection your vet might put him on oral antibiotics. Not all antibiotics are safe for rabbits, here is Medirabbit’s list of safe antibiotics: http://www.medirabbit.com/Safe_medication/Antibiotics/Safe_antibiotics.htm

You want the wound to dry up so infection doesn’t spread. He could lose the injured part of his ear, but that’s not a problem for the bunny, it’s just an esthetic thing. It’s very common with ear injuries though, so don’t be alarmed.

I hope your bun gets better!

I do want to add that keep both of your bunnies completely separate at all times until both have been spayed/neutered and gone through the proper bonding process. At this age they are hormonal and will only want to fight and mate, and they can fight to the death.

                I keep them separate.

Fucidine for humans (20 mg/g cream) is fine for rabbits. Put it on all the damaged parts, a thin layer. You can do this twice per day.

A bunny can potentially lose the whole ear, but frayed edges are more common.

Bunny keeps steping on his ear and its gotten worse. We are giving him antibiotics and fucidin. That means that we need to cut off the ear?

Did you take him to the vet to get the appropriate care?

What meds did they put him on? No injury should mean an amputation. If the bun becomes septic or the ear is cold in that area, then it means that tissue has died so then an amputation would be necesary, but it would have to be a really bad infection. One of my buns got an infection from subq fluids and her skin opened up and now has a 1inch scab on it as it heals. And she’s on antibiotics too. Can you upload a picture of the ear how it is today?

Would you be able to call the vet tomorrow and get the name of it so we can make sure it’s rabbit safe? Antibiotics need to be used for 2+ weeks for the effect to work and start killing all the bacteria. What did the vet say about how the ear looked?
