Infected toenail!! What should I do???

  Ok so I just joined this site because I’m at my wits end in regards to my rabbit. He lost a toenail (as all rabbits do occasionally) on his back right foot several weeks ago but Thursday night we noticed the stub was really swollen and looked to be infected. We tried getting ahold of different vets in the area but so many places are closed or have strange hours because of Covid-19 and we ended up having to wait until today. Unfortunately it’s also a holiday so even more places are closed and I just don’t know how concerned I should be or even if there is a simple solution I can do at home to clear up the infection. He’s still eating, drinking, pooping, and hopping around normally but he’s putting as little weight on the foot as possible. He doesn’t seem terribly bothered by it but he must be in some kind of pain since he’s trying not to use it. Any advice at all would be greatly appreciated!!!

  Update: We were finally able to find a vet! They suggested an antibiotic and as far as we know he’s gonna be okay!

  I’m glad you were able to find someone. I would have suggested an oral antibiotic as the way to go. Once an infection gets inside, it is difficult to control from the outside. You’ll have to keep us updated. Torn nails rarely become infected. When they do, it needs to be addressed quickly. You did a good job finding a vet on short notice. This has been a challenge for a lot of people due to the pandemic.
