Infected eye…?

Hi there…

I think my other rabbit, Thomas, may have an eye infection. The skin around the eye is sorta red, the eye is watery and has clearish-cloudy-ish gook. It’s not stuck shut together.

I’m really tempted to just go visit the vet because I’ve scared myself reading up on stuff regarding rabbits, eyes and infections. But I’m really pressed for time, and I’ve just recently got him really well bonded to me, and I know taking him to vet will regress all the work I’ve done with the bunny. (He and his brother are really anti-touch, but he’s gotten so good lately)

Should I take him to the vet? I really want to, came home and saw his eye, and if I could drive, would’ve gone already. Sadly, I don’t, so I have to fix it so my dad can drive me. Is an eye infection very serious? Should I wait the night and see if it gets worse or better? =( Is there something I could buy for his eye that doesn’t need prescription?

EDIT: Maybe I’m just getting ahead of myself, but I got my sister to try to make an appointment for tomorrow morning, since I know both me and my dad are free only in the morning. Hopefully… otherwise, not til the weekend…

DEFINITELY take him to the vet. My Monkey had watery eyes, and they were caused by ulcers in her eyes that wont heal without meds. If left untreated, and eye infection could result in your bun losing its eye. Please take him in ASAP.

It is definitely a good idea to take your bunny to the vet. I do not think that it will un-do all of the work you have done bonding with your rabbit, in fact, you taking care of him and re-assuring him during a slightly stressful time for him may even bring you and him closer together. Often when bonding rabbits we recommend putting them in a stressful situation so that they snuggle together for re-assurance.

It is a good idea to take care of eye infections right away, and really any infection on a rabbit, because if they are in pain it is possible that they could stop eating which has even more serious consequences.

Phew, vet CAN see us tomorrow morning!

Aside from the eye, he’s still doing okay, eating voraciously as always. Is there anything I can do to ease it? He’s scratching it a lot, and although I stopped the really heavy sessions, I don’t think it’s doing him a lot of good. =/

Hm, I doubt it it’ll help bond… But I plan to bring lots of raisins and just give him a lot of treats during the way. He’s always been the healthy bun and hasn’t gone to the vet in years. =( Hopefully he’ll just forgive me, he’s always been very forgiving. My other bun still hates me after all the force-feeding, he runs away on sight of me. =(

You could try a using a warm washcloth to wipe away any gunk from around the eye or the corners of the eye, or just lightly put it over your bunnies eye to help loosen up any of the gunk that may have dried up. Is it his eye that he is scratching a lot? You probably want to try to prevent him from doing that, at least when you are able to watch him, just so he doesn’t irritate it too much.

His eye looks very wet at the moment, nothing dried. I did try with a warm washcloth, and wiped some of the gunk away, but he just went into overdrive scratching his eye. (I’m trying to stop him when I see it…) =( I guess just have to wait til tomorrow. Augh. It makes me feel so bad for him. So sudden too, he was great this morning…

UPDATE:

Took him to the vet, and he gave me an eye ointment for him. I’m so proud of my baby, he was so excellent at the vet’s, considering he hasn’t gone to the vet in a very long time, and he was quite man-handled, lol. He’s a little pouty at me, but doesn’t seem to be hating me, so that’s good. =)

Another good thing is that the vet said that I’m gonna need to keep an eye out for teeth spurs, seems to be developing one. I’ve expected those with my other bun, not this one, so that’s good to know.

Glad you took him to the vet! Hopefully the eye will clear up – could be partly a result as well of the molar spur problem…good to know that so you can watch out for this too.

He said he didn’t think it was cause of the spur, probably some irritant in the air. He couldn’t find any irritation from the spur in his cheeks or tongue.

EDIT: Should I go take care of the spur ASAP? He said it’s not really a worry right now, but…

I would just find out from the vet when he would want to take care of it if he felt it wasn’t a worry right now. Obviously if he stops eating or suddenly changes his eating habits that is going to be a red flag too that it is time for a trim as well.
