Okay, Chester has been home from the vets for a few hours now after getting neutered today. He has been relatively quiet and sleeping until I left the room. I come back to find him cleaning the area of the surgery and has pulled out chunks of fur! What do I do? He’s sleeping at the moment, but how do I stop him from doing that through the night? The vets are closed and I don’t know what to do
Is he irritating the actual incision area? It’s normal for them to want to wash there and as long as he’s not being aggressive or making it bleed, I would just leave him be but keep a close eye on him. Also, the area might be itchy, you could ask your vet if you could put something on it. Another BB member might know of something that’s bunny safe that might help.
If he’s doing damage to the incision you might have to get him an e-collar. It’s unusual for most buns to need one but my Stormy did. Hoping all is well now and that Chester won’t need one.
Thank you so much for your reply, LittlePuffyTail. I just checked his incision area and it’s not irritated or anything. He was just pulling fir out which worried me a bit ![]()
Also, he hasn’t pooped yet. He’s peed, had a bit to drink and eat but still no poops. Should I be concerned? It’s 11:31pm here and I’m not exactly sure what time his op was done. I dropped him off about 10am, was told to call at 3pm to check up and picked him up at 4pm. If I don’t see any poops in the morning I will most definitely call the vet. I just don’t think I will sleep too well tonight. I’ve hardly let him out of my site. I really want to see some poops before bedtime! Ugh ![]()
Excuse the numerous typos. It’s been a long day lol
I don’t know what time it is in Australia but if you haven’t slept yet, turn a light on and lay down. If you’re anything like me you’ll wake up every 2 hours which will allow you to check on him and you still get to sleep. The fur pulling is new. I would just make sure the incision is clean. Have you tried some of his favorite treats? My boy got through his OP with hay, lettuce, and his favorite- willow leaves.
Thanks FrankieFlash
It’s just after midnight here. I’ve got a lamp on so I I can check on Chester (his cage is right behind me lol I’m so paranoid)
I’ve been giving him his favorites but he’s only picking bits and pieces
Still no poops to report. Is this not pooping this normal after neutering?
usually. I think they say to give it at least 12 hours. My vet said if I didn’t see any the day after surgery to call her. Did they give him any sub-q fluids at the vet?
Its been quite a few year since my boys were neutered so I dont remember how long the poos took but I do remember them being small, squishy and mishapen, which is perfectly normal.
The fact that he is eating and drinking something is a good sign. Try to get some rest. :-/
The first day (which technical this probably still is) it’s very common to have the eating and pooping be irregular and smaller than normal, in part because the anesthesia is leaving their system first. I’m guessing that it’s close to morning by now when you read this, and I suggest you take a look at the site to see if it’s still untouched and just pulled fur, then call your vet. If they have a service, call right away and leave a message asking them to get back to you asap. You want them to handle the follow-up care that you are entitled to post-procedure. This is standard to have your vet stay in touch, and answer any questions you may have. Your vet may want you to bring him in so she can see what’s going on, and possibly put on the collar that was mentioned. But since the site wasn’t being chewed, I am hoping you got some rest by now and it’s only the pulled fur. Has he pooped yet? (Sorry for the time zone confusion.)
Hope Chester feels better by now!! Wish I could help — my little guy was bundle of energy when he came back from his neuter. I did a lot of research before hand, so if any of this helps — I read a lot about how the males can go downhill a little bit when the pain meds wear off — did your vet give you pain meds to give him??? If not that could probably be making him so miserable. Also, my guy couldn’t sit down properly. When he sat — he held his back end off the ground so I could tell it was bothering him a little bit. My vet said if they don’t poop and pee within 24 hours to bring him in immediately so hopefully he has by now! But that if he’s doing each only a little that is normal too. Especially if he hasn’t eaten or drank a lot. If he’s not eating much — maybe you could try Critical Care and mixing it with a treat? I’ve read a lot about using baby food on this site!
Anyone above — feel free to correct me if I’m wrong! Hope some of this helped! Hope Chester is feeling better though. I was so worried about my girl bun when she got her spay that I bawled for like an hour, so don’t feel too overprotective or overly caring! I think we all are here! ![]()
Hope chester feels better!! I would get a cone, if you can’t get one my cousin improvised with a cut to fit pop bottle (soft edges with tape on them, and supervision) until she could get a cone.
Thank you everyone for your replies
Chester finally pooped at around 1:30am. I’ve never been so happy to see poop lol
I slept on the lounge and put his cage right behind my head so I would wake up at any tiny movement. He’s left the stitches alone which is a relief and has stopped pulling fur.
I asked the vet about pain meds and was told that he has already been given some that will last 24 hours, and if he was pulling at the stitches I could come and collect more meds today. He seems okay, still a bit quiet but he is flopping over and hopping around his cage
Such a relief that he is doing better, I was freaking out all day yesterday because Chester is my first bunny so I didn’t know how he would react to the surgery.
Once gain, thank you for your replies everyone
I’m so glad I found this site ![]()
Glad to hear all is well. And yes, as bunny owners we all get excited to see poop from a bunny we’re concerned about.![]()
Thank Goodness for your sanity he is alright! Hope the rest of his healing goes just fine. My buns have been neutered almost 2 weeks now and their incisions are almost totally healed and you can see a tiny bit of scar tissue. But they’re looking so good!
I’m surprised that the vet didn’t give you any other pain meds. My bunnies have always found the taste of Metacam pleasant. I would try and get some next time for peace of mind.
Sorry you had such a worrisome and restless night, that must’ve been awful. I am with others on here who am a bit surprised that you didn’t get to bring any pain meds home. My vet gave me 3 doses for each of my buns that we gave them 3 nights in a row. However, I’m so glad that he finally is pooing and I know that you are relieved at that! Let us know soon how he’s progressing! I’m sure he’ll be back to his old self very soon!!
Hello everyone ![]()
It’s been 2 weeks and a bit since Chester’s surgery and he has healed nicely. Back to his usual lovely self ![]()
Sorry for such a late reply/update, I’ve been so busy organizing everything for uni this semester and job hunting
Such a slow process lol
Good to hear, I am so happy that he is better 🙂
Excellent! Thanks for the update! Please share more pics ASAP!!
