I’ve been looking for a rescue bunny for a few weeks now. Samsons in a good place, and seems happy, but I’m always reading how much the buns love having a friend, and so here I am. My biggest issue so far is getting anyone on petfinder to call or email me back, I don’t see how they can have “in dire need of fosters! Or Adoptions!” all over their websites, yet they refuse to actually respond to any requests.

I’ve also seen on one website that they have tons of bunnies, but refuse to adopt to a home that wants to bond, and on others that they wont adopt to homes with small children. So I either just wing it and pick out a bunny and hope like heck that Samson agrees, or I pick out a bun from a pet store, or I have to somehow convince the rescues (assuming they actually contact me) that while I have small children, they are extremely well behaved and monitered around Samson, and on top of that, Samson actually prefers our almost 4 year old to anyone else in the house.

        Ok, rant over. <3

Where are you located? Someone may be able to help you find a bun if we knew your area.

That’s a shame. I think it’s so important for rescues (rabbit or other animals) to have these types of rules in place, but I think it’s a shame when the rules stand in the way of perfectly good owners adopting their animals. Especially when they won’t call you back!

If you’re looking to bond Samson with another it is best to let him pick his new friend, most rescues encourage bonding and will only not adopt to a house that already had a rabbit if you refuse to bring in your current rabbit to meet the new one. Are there rescues/shelters in your area? Does your state have a chapter of the House Rabbit Society? If the rabbits you’re looking at on Petfinder are from rescues then I would suggest contacting the actual rescue if you haven’t already. Bring your children to the appointment, rescues a lot of times require/prefer all family members to come to an adopting. Usually rescues will not adopt certain bunnies to homes with young children because they bite or are aggressive. If your children are well behaved and monitored around the bunnies then they should still adopt to you (:

Agreed with bunnnyfriend – maybe if you brought your children and demonstrated how well-behaved and knowledgeable about rabbits they are, maybe it would smooth things over with the rescue. All these rules are in place for good intentions, but I can see how it would be frustrating for some people…however, with the right kids or the right bunnies, maybe they might be willing to make an exception .

The rescues I’ve found all link to petfinder, so yes, I’ve been looking specifically to rescues. I’ve emailed all that didn’t have phone numbers, and called and left messages at all that did, still nothing. I’m in NJ The one that said no children, I found that hidden in their blog after I already emailed and mentioned I do have small children but they don’t handle Samson without supervision, so it’s possible she just wrote me off there.

Ah that is annoying! Have you tried here? http://www.njhrs.com/ They might even help you adopt a bunny that is not in their foster program.

It’s possible too that they just haven’t had a chance to get back with you – most of the groups are all volunteers – I would send another email.

It took over a week to get a response from the rescues in my area, they get crowded and it’s nearing certain holidays, so some people are getting busy with family and such. Give it a week or so then email them again.
