Baxter is getting neutered tomorrow morning and I am so scared! The Vet will only be there to neuter him and then long enough to make sure he is stable. He won’t be there Friday either! There will be a different vet there Friday morning. They said they have Certified Technicians there to watch over him but I am scared! He absolutely won’t let me clip his nails and they are very long! The way he scratches scares me. What if he tears open his stitches in the middle of the night and there is no one there to help him? I am so scared I could cry! Any tips, advice or just something to calm my nerves would be greatly appreciated. ![]()
I know we all the jitters at the dreaded spay/neuter appointment coming up, it’ll be ok. As long as he’s going to be put out, maybe they could clip his nails too.
((((calming vibes for you))))
Kathy
Neuters aren’t so hard on the rabbits. Many are even sent home the same day. Are you sure he will have stitches? Some vets just use surgical glue or the incision is so tiny that it closes right away.
(((vibes!))))
I was freaking out for Lucy’s spay last week too. And it turned out just fine! All my worrying was for nothing, and I’m sure yours will be too! She was like 100% back to normal in just a few days. (and she doesn’t hate me or hold the surgery against me either!)
Yeah Lucy didn’t have normal stitches…they used something that disolves over time? Honestly she hasn’t been interested in them at all. Barely even looks at them, let alone tried to pull them out.
Advice…
If you want to be as totally paranoid as I was:
I put a white towel at the bottom of her cage – so that I could see if there was even a drop of blood (and also because it was nice and soft)
and also for the first like…12 hours, I put a piece of white papertowel over her litter box, again to see any blood, but also so I could easily see that she peed, and change it IMMEDIATELY.
She sometimes sits in there and I didn’t want her getting pee on her scar.
Oh also we put a big towel over the whole cage so that was darker and quieter then usual. (Just for the night she came home and the first day) – I feel like that helped. Also gave her a little space so that she couldn’t tell how much I was hoovering and fretting around her
I am not sure if there will be stitches. I just didn’t want it coming open at night. That is what scares me. I hope it isn’t too bad and that all of my worrying is for nothing. The towel in the bottom of the cage is a good idea but I couldn’t do that as Baxters living space is 3’x10′. I have a cage that is not in use but he is so big his litter box won’t even fit in that cage. I could block off half of his pen and lay towels out. Would that make a difference? Or maybe blocking off half of his living space so that he isn’t as able to run around so much. Should I do that? It can be done easily. I want him to be as comfortable as possible when he comes home. Another thing is that he loves is his frozen water bottles. I wrap them in a towel and he unwraps them and lays on them. He does get a little damp. Should I not give him those right after? Is there anyway that he could come open due to dampness of the water bottle? He is a total groomer in that area so it does worry me a lot. I am planning of getting him a few toys that he can chew and bat at to try to keep his mind off of his area.
How did he do?!
(((Baxter!)))
Hows the little boy?
He did great! I am so happy! They even clipped his nails for me when he was out. They did another exam on him and didn’t even charge me for it. The charged me less than I expected too. I called them to see how he was doing and they said that he was hopping around the kennel and eating and pooping normally like nothing happened! I can’t pick him up until tomorrow at 2:30! I want him to come home now! lol I am going to get him a kitty crinkle tube and a plastic slinky today for his welcome home tomorrow.
make sure he doesn’t jump to much when he gets home or lick to much then he will be fine.
oh, I will have to keep an eye on him then because he grooms that area a lot. Thanks.
Mocha where did you get that tube at in the pic?
That’s really good news. ![]()
I am very happy
I went to Petsmart today and got him a soft kitty mat just his size (for now lol). I also got him a new willow ball and a frisbee. I am moving his pen out of our room and back into the living room as my Husband complains that he smells skunky lol. It is cooler in there so he will like it better. How long will it take before he stops the hormonal things like marking with his poo and spraying?
You should see an improvement starting in two weeks from his neuter. After one month the skunk scent and spraying should cease completely.
GOOD! I am not enjoying him stinking. He has only sprayed once…thank goodness BUT, it was on me
I just want him to not be so miserable because he can smell Bella and not get to her. Thanks for the info!
nibbles: i got it at menards. i think it was 5.99. they LOVED it! but i left it out side and it got rained on
i need another one.
I want one! I just bought a kitty crinkle tube today. Baxter hasn’t gotten to try it out yet though
I hope he likes it.
What exactly is supposed to used for? What section of the store should I look in?
they are for poring cement into the tube. ( to cement basket ball hoops and stuff i think)
I got one just like it at Lowes for about the same price. Mine run in and out of it all day!!
Well, Baxter is home now. I had his pen opened up so he had a 3’x10′ space to run around in. He was in our bedroom and it is kind of hot in there since the air conditioner is in the living room. I moved his pen in the living room where it is nice and cool. I closed his pen up so he could run and jump too much. I gave him his new pillow mat thing and his crinkle tube and willow ball. He has a lot less space but he could care less lol. He is so happy in that crinkle tube and I think he is a lot more comfy in the cool living room. He is doing well eating and moving around but they couldn’t get enough fecals from him to do a test. They said that he had pills in his kennel there but not many. I brought him hom around 3:15 and he hasn’t pooped once. He usually poops a lot. They said that if he doesn’t start pooping at all tonight to call them tomorrow morning.
i am sure he will poop soon. my bunny ( mocha) didn’t even eat for about 48 hours. not saying he wont eat, just saying i am sure he will do fine. make sure he doesn’t lick to much down there. Glade he likes his tube!
Oh he is eating like a horse! He ate as soon as he woke up lol. They were really surprised! I just checked and he is pooping normally. Some pills are a little smaller than normal but most are normal. I haven’t even seen him look down there. They said that he hasn’t really noticed anything was different. I am just so happy that everything turned out good. I am also happy the Bella (girly name!) turned out to be a boy. I would be worried sick if my bunny had to go through a spay!
If you need to check his stitches, hold up a treat and bunny will sniff and eat it
It is a good way to check for stitches without picking him up
I am glad that he is doing well ![]()
He doesn’t have stitches. They used surgical glue on him. The incision is small. I’ve tried to peek when he was standing up a couple of times but he catches on too fast lol. The treat idea is a good one. thanks. I am going to have my Husband feed him some carrot matchsticks later so I can peek.
Good good!
I discovered that ChaCha ripped her stitches out.. I didn’t realize until later when I was cleaning out her cage and took out her grass mat o_O;;
The vet actually expected her to rip the stitches out. Rabbits ARE indeed chewers.
He glued the incision as well, so it was fine.
You must be so glad Baxter is no longer a hormonal bunny! ![]()
mocha ripped out his stitches and we didn’t know till we got home and there was blood every were! and he ripped it so bad that the doctor couldn’t put him to sleep so my dad had to hold him while he stitched him back up! and part way through he jumped off the table…. poor mocha… that vet was really weird though, they didn’t have any vet assistance, just one ditsy old doctor.
don’t worry i am sure he will do fine if he isn’t even licking them… mocha and lulu were licking them a LOT.
Wow! that is a terrifying story. I bet you were freaking out! I would’ve been. I tried to give him carrots so I could see his little tid bits or what used to be lol. I don’t really know what it is supposed to look like 2 days after surgery. I couldn’t get a good look so I had to pick him up. He didn’t like it but tolerated it better than I thought. I only got a look at one before he wiggled away from me. It is like hanging down and flat. Looks really ugly lol. It isn’t swollen or bleeding ans I didn’t even see where the incision was at. I thought I saw a tiny bit of pinkish red but it didn’t concern me. What is it supposed to look like?
Oh Brittany, Baxter is still hormonal lol. I was humped twice today. I won’t tell you what I saw when he stood up o.O! He just got them out so it’ll be a little while before the hormones work thier way out. I just hope it is very soon! lol
