        Hi everyone,

Well, I went out to the workshop to check on the bunnies this morning and somehow my female rabbits’ hutch was opened. I saw her running across the floor and freaked out. The reason I freaked out is because I have a male who is not fixed running free in the workshop and I know they mated and I am VERY upset.

so I made an appointment for her to get spayed and the pregnancy terminated next Thursday, she’ll be one week along by then and I’m very worried about getting her spayed. She is 3 years old and lives with my neutered male. I have 3 rabbits in total. But my worry is that she is 3 years old and how risky is this surgery? I just cannot add to the overpopulation problem with have with rabbits’ on the Island. So I have to terminate this pregnancy.

        bye for now.

          Bette,

Sorry to hear about the scare. 3 years old isn’t too old to have the procedure. They may need to take some more precautions such as having an IV set up for fluids and so on but she’s still young enough to recover from the spay.

There is always the possibilty of complications, but a 3 year old is not an old bunny for a surgical procedure.  Besides taking care of the potential pregnancy, the spay will make her healthier in the long run.  At 3 she is probably already developing pre cancerous lesions in her uterus, so the spay will prevent her from getting uterine cancer.

I understand your concern but 3 years old is definitely not too old. You are doing the right thing.

Are you sure she is pregnant?

My bunny is getting spayed tomorrow and I wouldn’t have a clue how old she is, but I do know it is the right thing to do.

my bun was 7yrs old last yr when she had a mammary lump surgically removed.  it’s not the same as a spay but was still fairly  invasive since they had to remove all suspicious tissue plus a margin of healthy looking tissue.  baby bun sailed thru her recovery just fine & is spunkier than ever!

Thanks all for the support. I’m a worrywart when it comes to my pets. As far as whether or not she is pregnant I just can’t change waiting it out to see if she is. I mean the male was with her and so chances are she is. Plus, if she does have the beginnings of cancer this operation will lengthen her life and the quality of it. So I feel a lot better about this decision now. I do still worry for her but I know she is going to an experienced Vet and she will be in good hands. She is having her pre-op exam on Saturday and I will let u know if the Vet has any concerns. I”m hoping this surgery will be straight forward and she will come thru like babybunsmum, with flying colours.

                      Thanks again everyone!
