Hi ! My name is Tami and I live in Bedford, PA.
We just recently acquired 3 bunnies. One is a 10 mo. old female Lionhead named Mopsey, the other used to be my sons’ bunn, Sid (we called him our "Grandbunny", but now he’s our kid *wink*)…….we would have him here for a week at a time to visit with "Grammy" & "Pappy" and were always sad to see him go home when my son came to get him……..but, my son and his girlfriend got a Pit Bull puppy and I told him from the start he won’t be able to have the dog & Sid out at the same time because Sid could really get hurt or even killed, so my son gave us Sid as a Christmas gift, LOL ! He is all white with pink eyes and no particular breed that I know of, but he is a sweetheart. My son told us to watch out for the "Sid Hammer" and boy, he wasn’t joking !! The first night we had him here he grabbed my arm and had at it……..I had to have hubby pull him off me ! LMAO ! I never seen anything like it in my whole life ! OMG Anyway, we definitely have to get him neutered !! We figured Sid to be born either the end of May ’07 or beginning of June ’07, so he’s due, LOL !
The other bunn is a little female Netherland Dwarf that was born Sept. 30th & she is the dearest thing ! We named her Bally because her dainty little feet reminded me of a ballerina’s.
We have two dogs, a fixed female Shih Tzu/Pekingese named Kazee & a fixed male Yorkie named Kozmo and they are great with the bunns. In fact, Sid loves them so much he wants to make love to them ! LMAO Mopsey teases Sid by hanging out on top of his cage and letting him sniff her, then when it’s time for Sid to come out (we don’t leave them out together because we don’t want babies since I’m still waiting on an answer from Mopsey’s previous owner if she’s spayed or not) he’s all fired up and so goes after Kazee. We put the other two bunns up off the floor so Sid can’t get to them because he’s wantin’ to lay the Sid Hammer down ! OMG…..we laugh so hard with these bunns and dogs. We can’t take our eyes off Sid for a minute because he isn’t litter trained yet (we’re working on it, though !) and even though we have no carpet in the house, he still pees in places that really irritate me…….like close to my subwoofer to the point the fabric face gets ‘damp’ & the wooden crates I use to house my vinyl records that I’ve had since I was in school…….he loves chewing on the jacket covers, btw He is most definitely a handful !!
So I have a question……how young can a bunny be before getting them fixed ? If Mopsey’s previous owners tell me she’s not fixed, then I know her age isn’t a deterent since she’s 10 mos. old & Sid I KNOW is old enough *SHEESH*, but little Bally, I’m not too sure about. She’s so little and won’t get much bigger, I was told. I think getting Sid fixed first, though, should be our first priority because Mopsey isn’t displaying any kind of behaviourial problems right now where Sid is just outta control with his "male urges" & little Bally is still trying to get used to all the hub-bub around here. My Yorkie, Kozmo, is a toy fetcher dog and is absolutely relentless when it comes to chasing toys. He will bark til he’s blue in the face to get you to throw his toy and his bark can really make your ears ring at times if he wants it bad enough, so Bally has had a lot of commotion to get used to so far.
Anyway, that’s only part of my "family". We have 17 parrots as well, but mostly all smaller species like budgies/parakeets, Cockatiels & Conure sized. We have a Rose Breasted Cockatoo and a Congo African Grey that repeats every thing we say (which sometimes isn’t too good, if ya know what I mean) & is so hilarious to listen to ! He knows when to cuss at just the right time when hubby drops something on the floor and when Kozmo starts his incessant barking he tells him to "Be Quiet…..Go Lay Down !!!" or "Do you hafta go potty ???" It’s Reality TV at it’s finest ! LOL !
I look forward to learning all I can about bunnies and how to make their lives happier and also I look forward to meeting all of you and being able to talk about our little bunns without someone rolling their eyes like you can’t think of anything better to talk about. You tell me……What could be any better than sharing bunny-antics with your fellow man ?
I can’t think of a thing……..
Blessings,
Tami
Welcome Tammy and buns…and puppies…and parrots! Geeze, that is one heck of a family you have there.
You sound sooo excited to have the buns and that just tickles me! You are surrounded by great people who are here to listen and offer good sound advice.
I myself, am the proud owner of two wonderful buns which have just bonded. There is always a lot to learn with these little bunners.
Hope you enjoy your time here with us!
*jackie
welcome here! sounds like you’ve got your hands full. is this the first time you guys have had rabbits?
to answer your altering question… females can be spayed at 4 months but i think most vets try to wait until about 6 months or so. males can be neutered when the testicles descend, about 3-4 months… but it sounds like your boy is more than ready. if you’re planning on getting your boy done first, by the time he’s taken care of and healed up, you should be able to see if the vet will do both girls at the same time and then you’ll be all done and on the road to recovery. are you planning on bonding them after the surgery? also, if they’re not already, you want to make sure the boy is kept away from the girls. either one of them can get pregnant now.
hi tami! that sure is quite a family… wow! a good friend of mine has a young african grey who whistles the andy griffith theme song and can imitate her cats & dog noises as well as truck backing up, bluejays, chair squeaks, and the funniest… the phone ringing! too funny. i’m not sure how young buns can be fixed, but i know some one else will be able to tell you with certainty. there are some pretty experienced bunny slaves on this site
Welcome Tami wow! I was laughing a lot reading your post oh my! LOL Whew, what a zoo full of antics! Well it is GREAT to have you here and I hope to see you around a lot more, sharing and kidbitsing with you!
You certainly have quite a household! You’ve come to the right place. This website and all the people here are just great and so knowledgeable!
welcome!
Welcome Tami!! What a sweet human fuzzy feathured furry family you have! I loved reading your post. So funny.
I wanted to add that if you get Sid done first, be sure to keep him separate from the female for a month, as he can still have viable sperm until even after surgery for up to a month.
It also can take that long for the hormones to die down. His litterbox habits, any destructo habits, and his “hammer” habits should subside.
As far as Mopsy goes, you can see if she has a neuter tatoo – basically an ink splot somewhere on her tummy. It’s hard to find with all the fur there, and not all vets do it, but if you see one, at least you know for sure she is.
Welcome Tami!!! Your household sounds so wonderful! Funny post! That was a good point binkybunny brought up, it seems weird but bunnies are still fertile up to a month after being fixed!! We’d love to see some pics of your bunnies (and dogs and birdies too!) when you have time
Thanks to all of you for replying to my post ! You all are so awesome !
Yes, this is the first time being bunny owners but we had some experience with Sid from last summer when my son would bring Sid over to visit and he’d stay with us for a week or more, so we knew what all was involved beforehand :o))
We just fell in love with Sid the first time my son brought him here. He licks the palm of my hand all the time when I pet his cheeks and head and he just adores my husband, following him around all over the place and watching when he cleans his cage. He loves climbing the stairs ! We have to follow him up to make sure he doesn’t fall since they are all wood and don’t have any carpet treads on them yet so he doesn’t get very good traction at times. Like I said in my introduction, we absolutely CANNOT take our eyes off him because he is a very curious little bunn-bunn and wants to see how far he can “push’ things !
When Mopsey is out, hubby & I lay on the floor on our bellies and she jumps all over us and lays down on our backs sometimes, LOL ! Sid jumps up on the chair with me or hubby when we’re sitting in the recliner but doesn’t stay too long, hehehe. Little Bally is still pretty skittish and doesn’t venture far from the tunnels we have set up for them. I have two long cardboard tunnels that I saved when I got a Real Flame Fireplace (uses gel fuel and isn’t toxic to animals when burned, but provides warmth and the ambience of a real fireplace and it’s portable) and they are set up on the living room floor (we have no carpet in the house whatsoever) and the bunns absolutely LOVE going inside them to either lounge or run through and shoot out the other end like a bullet, sliding across the floor before coming to a stop. They’re so fast it’s unbelievable, LOL ! We just love watching and interacting with them. We really adore them and feel so blessed to have them in our lives.
I am still busy reading through all the past posts and trying to absorb all the info, so if I don’t post for awhile it’s because I’m still reading *giggle*
Thanks again everyone and I’ll letcha know when the “Sid Hammer” is scheduled to be shut down, LMAO !
Blessings,
Tami
the past posts are really good and have probably covered about every situation, but feel free to start another thread if you have any questions. asking questions are not just beneficial to you… but also to other people who may have been wondering the same thing. oh one more thing… can we expect pics of the furry & feathery family anytime soon?
Welcome! I’m a fellow animal lover and bunny crazy gal. I have 4 cats, 2 buns, 1 horse and a fish. Looking forward to seeing some pics of your buns and hearing all about their future antics!
Well, I just tried to post some pics and an Error page came up
Don’t know what’s up with that…….so I’ll try again, I guess.
We just had Sid out for a little bit and I took some pics and now we’re getting ready to let Mopsey out, so everyone else goes up off the floor just like we did with Sidbunny :o)
I’m going to get some pics of her while she’s out and then some of Bally next and I’ll be sending those in soon !
Be right back !
Blessings,
Tami
the pics could be too big in size to post. i have to reduce the size of mine for them to work. i’m terrible at explaining tech stuff… but if you goto the technical forum i think you’ll find a thread or two on this topic.
Welcome! Can’t wait to see pictures too.
I have a cockatiel too – only one though – he’s more than I can handle. Cute but loud little fellow.
Hi Tami, I’m happy to know that you are willing to dedicate much care and time to all of your pets and can have a humourous attitude with their behaviour! It sounds like the bunnies will have a nice home with you! It’s also great that you are looking into getting the buns fixed.. I know what it’s like to have a young “active” male bunny! It’s amazing what a difference the neuter made!
Welcome Tami!
Thats so great that you have so many animals – I love birds in addition to bunnies, but being in an apartment means that I don’t have any birds at the moment. I just love that little bird on YouTube that can dance to the Backstreet Boys, he’s so cute!
Bunnies can be fixed as early as three months, but as some other people said, I’d recommend waiting a bit longer just because they do have to be anesthetized for the surgery so you want them to be “hearty” enough to recover without any trouble.
All your bunnies sounds so sweet and friendly – I can’t wait to see pictures of them!
Welcome to BB, Tami. I look forward to reading more about your zoo!
Hi my ame is Jan and I adopedted a bunny..the first one ever 3 weeks ago from a person who could not care for the bun any longer…she still has 1 other bun and 2 cats and 2 dogs and children and works…so she has to get rid of some things in her life..Sooooooooooo…In I come and see BEEPERS..the bunny…he is so cute….I have read alot of things on your website about buns and made the decision to take him rather than see him go to the humane society….
The previous owner told me Beepers was house trained….well…that was kinnda true…we have had problems in that area….Beepers is a male 1 1/2 old Satin bunny..he is black and brown…the last owner said Beepers had run of the house and never had accidents or chewed cords or destroyed anything…and always wanted to be held and even slept with her in bed at night…she did not even have a cage for Beepers.
Well…he goes potty wherever he wants…he chews whatever he wants and he does not let me even touch him…he runs……When she brought him here…she took him out of a box…held him for about 5 mins.let me hold him for about 2 mins…I put him on the floor an he procedded to pee and poo all over…she stay and explained things for about 15 mins and I have not heard from her since.
So I really rely on this website and all of you to help me raise this bun…Beepers is getting better…and I love him to pieces and we will make it with all your HELP
Thanks Jan and Beepers
hi Tami and Jan,
welcome to binkybunny! 🙂
Tami – it sounds like you have quite a wonderful lil zoo at your house!
Jan – Beepers previous owner made him out to be superbun, but it’s pretty rare to have a bunny all those traits. I’m glad you’re so invested in him and love him 🙂
when a bunny moves into a new space, they often take some time to adjust and feel like it’s their territory. is he neutered? That makes a big impact in how well they do with litterbox training?
Does he have a cage now? Too much territory is very overwhelming for them. One method that’s worked well for me is to limit the territory and add more litter boxes, especially in areas he seems to repeatedly mark. So – instead of giving him a whole room to explore, you give him only a smaller part of it, once he gets litterboxing down in that area, you slowly start to expand his territory as he continues to improve.
To help you bond with him – try laying on the floor and ignore him. Read a book or watch tv, but not him. He’ll likely be so curious that he’ll have to come up and sniff / visit with you. Bringing ourselves down to our bunny’s level makes us much less scary to them. You could also try to hand feed him veggies
please let us know how it’s going
janymae, I recommend you repost your post as a new thread, so that it can be seen and you’ll get more help.
