you would think if these ingredients are bad for buns and bad on a daily basis why would feed makers put it in the food? I thought that was a bit odd

Because some food makers don’t know what is bad and what isn’t for a bun. It is what I call “Inherited Stupidity” – where someone simply believes something else without any regard to the truth. Such as ‘a bun can eat chips’ or ‘a bun can survive in the wild if I set it loose’ and so on. Our consumer system does not require you to be intelligent about the target of what you are supplying. And, since other people have the ‘inherited stupidity’, they won’t even think there’s anything wrong with what is there. I’d bet you that 95% of the populace wouldn’t think corn is bad for buns.

In addition, by putting in stuff that is extremely cheap in comparison to the rest of the food, they get to sell less of the real product for the same price.

Please don’t take this the wrong way, but you bought the food, right?  So it worked, they got you to buy it by putting stuff into it.  This is not a dig at you, but it is how the companies think that make this stuff.  They are selling to you, not the bunny, so they try to make it attractive to you.  it also makes the food more attractive to the stores, and by putting extra stuff into it, they can charge more ("Super Deluxe Mix&quot.  This is one of the reasons that the Oxbow and American Pet Diner stuff is harder to find, it is just a basic old pellet, yet it costs more that the "Super Deluxe" pellets at the pet shop, so the stores do not want to carry it.  It is the same story for cat and dog foods, only specialty shops carry the high quality food.

well yeah I did buy 1 bag and the people who work there when I try to tell them it isn’t good they say yes it is or they wouldn’t be selling it

well got me once. I won’t get that again. yes the pellets do look dull to me. and I dont want to put snickers and ice cream on top of my salad so they won’t get any on their pellets either not now.

and I will find timothy pellets just for them. I did see a bag at the pet store. the other store that carries oxbow is 3 bus rides away and long rides at that. but that binky bunny hay sure sounds good. will be ordering some friday.

I was teasing my friends when they asked me why I have hay in my cart. I said I am on a new diet hay soup. lol.

well with greens lying around in the frigie I am tempted to eat healthier too just like my buns.

and no more things in their food bags have to detox them from that rich stuff

Good choice I agree that its really irresponsible of pet stores to sell that stuff. i would imagine that the pet food manufacturers SHOULD know what is good and bad or a pet to eat, I think its really too bad that they don’t care.

I’m glad to hear that you are getting your bunny the “good food” – its really great of you to take good care of your little one!

yeah, i also find it extremely frustrating that pet stores seem a lot of products that are not going choices for bunnies! in addition to the pellets with all that junk in it, they also sell the pine shavings for litter, which are also unhealthy for bunnies.

This is a pet peeve of mine since way too many bunny owners don’t take time to learn about them. About 90% of treats I see for rabbits at petstores are totally bad for them too. It’s not fair for the buns with the uneducated owners.

Most likely pet stores sell things that aren’t appropriate for many animals including cats and dogs.

Unfortunately before the internet, bunny consumers didn’t have the good information and other options for pet food then what was in the pet stores.

Even many rabbit owners don’t know about rabbit rescues still.

Slowly but surely I think people are being educated on what is good and bad for rabbits.

grrr.  this topic still gets my blood boiling.  i know its the guilt factor of having fed my first 2 buns exclusively pellets & water based on the recommendation of the pet store owner AND the crap book that i bought.  of course both the book & the store owner were schooled by the pellet manufacturer so naturally they’d push their product.

unfortunately this is the same with all pet food as others have mentioned here.  i – litterally just this past week – did some very basic research of my own when my vet recommended a new food for my dog.  this food is supposedly "scientifically tested and approved".  but when i emailed this company guess what?  they would not produce or direct me towards any such studies.  the "scientifically tested and approved" dog food company wrote me off saying that the studies they use are owned by those who did the studies & i should read their website for info.  their website is just full of the crap they print on their labels which ‘claim’ that their ingrediants are healthy.  meanwhile they’re filled with corn.

don’t even get me started on the topic of using cheap corn & corn byproducts.

anyways, i agree with osprey, the quality foods are more expensive (they’re full of quality ingrediants) and sold in smaller more exclusive stores.  the dog food i get has a meat as its first & second ingredients and has no grain or corn.  i’m sticking with in.  oh, and when i emailed them asking about studies they responded with "what specifically would you like more info about?  we can send you studies about….."

It’s like the companies that make baby food that also put Baby Desert food on the shelves.. because people who don’t know better will buy it.

It’s so funny watching my once anti-animal hubby be so protective and baby talk with our buns complain about the people who make and sell the food that isn’t good and the treats and what not.lol, I “trained” him well!
