› FORUM › HOUSE RABBIT Q & A › Identity of my Princess ND Dwarf
Greetings everyone,
I just got my first female ND dwarf, I am well very well prepared to make her comfortable at home. I think it only took me 2-3 days to make her comfortable and roam around my room.
I have a question about her identity though, I didn’t look up enough on false NDs, peanuts ..etc but that is also how I came across numerous topics in here that share similar concerns like I do.
Her name is mofi and she is about 2 months old, lately I have been curious whether she is a TRUE ND or FALSE.
Sometimes she looks small and round sometimes she’s really long -_- and I do notice that her hind legs are pretty long when stretched out and her ears are pretty long for a 2months old bunny. I measured and its slightly below 2inches maybe 1.9. Can any pro spotters take a look and help me figure out if she’s a true or not ?
Thanks so much, I will love her irregardless if she’s a true or not but I just wanna have a better understanding of my own bunny.
I’m no expert on NDs, but she looks pretty “correct” to me. What were you told about her background, where did you get her, and what does she weigh currently? With dwarfs, their body proportion will still be the same as larger rabbits, just smaller all around.
I don’t know about much about dwarf’s, I just want to say that she’s very beautiful. ![]()

I got her off a local breeder, I was told both of the parent are true dwarf but of course I did not ask for any documents or further proof since I picked her up because I felt a connection to her. It is just out of curiosity about her that makes me want to seek expert opinion on her identity.

Thank you so much ! I love her, I think I spend most of my time talking with her not knowing if she understands me or not. I think she is a little too pampered for a 2month old heh.
This is her when she is 4 weeks old, grew significantly but it might also be me feeding her too much and spiking her growth ? Lol, I don’t know.
She’s cute – I really cannot tell though but I’m no expert. I have a full grown Netherland Dwarf whom I can only assume is a “true” dwarf – I really hate that name too “false” dwarf – I find it terribly misleading and apparently it’s only used in breeding.
After some of these same discussions on this board, I did wonder whether his ears were 2 inches or less and I measured (silly I know) but they were 2 inches.
I’ve never had a baby ND though – I’ve only rescued a few full grown adult ones and I believe that they were and are (my rabbit Bobby) definitely ND’s.
I know Monkeybun got her little ND, Monkey as a baby, maybe she can tell by your pictures.
Welcome Reiben and Mofi : )
I love the pictures of her all stretched out – so cute!
I do want to ask; did the breeder let you take her at 4 weeks old or did you go to visit a few times before taking her home?

He was nice enough to explain to me that bringing her back at 4 weeks is not ideal in order to get her weaned properly. I left it there for an additional week before bringing it home. When she first arrived back home with me she was so tiny and scared, she didn’t dare to move and would shiver now and then, but how time flies though, she is all comfortable now.
She also gave me my first 2 fright. “Binky” she started doing binky the moment she got comfortable, as a first time owner I thought something was biting her causing her to twist and jump into the air, maybe mites maybe fleas so I called the breeder and he explained to me that’s what they do when they are happy. Whenever I take out those Daily C, she binky like crazy.
Second fright was the bunny nip, woah the first time she did it on me, it gave me a shock, it wasn’t extremely painful but was enough to make me go “OUCH” so now I try to run away when I feel her opening her mouth on my feet and knees lol. Funny though she only do that to my feet ankle knees but never for once on my hand.
Thanks everyone so far for the inputs and also the warm welcome !
Have you seen a flop yet? They can be frightning too.
They’ll flop over on their side and completely zone out. It’s sometimes called a Dead Bunny Flop. Nothing to worry about though. They’re feeling pretty safe and secure if they flop.
I can’t help you with identifying the true or false part but I just wanted to say that is one of the cutest little bunnies ever!!
I think the only way to really tell is when they are full grown. Then you would base it on weight, ear length, and proportions. False dwarfs are still small (because their parents are small) but they are a little bigger and they do not have the dwarfism characteristics.

This was my Monkey when she was a baby. Your girl looks similar to her in shape, although its hard to tell size in the pics. Monkey was a runt though, so she’s small even compared to other nethies. How big is your girl?
That was Monkey as a baby? She hasn’t changed a bit :~)
Yep, she was almost 8 weeks old there
She’s still itty bitty though ![]()
I have a beautiful ND, I have no idea if he is true or false, and like you, I don’t care. Mine’s ears are a little more pointed and not as wide, but they are usually folded, but they’re still short and he weighs 1.25kg, is that big for a ND?
Beautiful little bunny!
Just my first impression, she appears to be a false dwarf based on the length of her ears. No need to worry though – it’s extremely common and it just means she might be slightly bigger than the breed standard, or at the high end of it. A rabbit has to get one copy of the dwarfing gene to be a true dwarf, and a rabbit who gets none is a false dwarf. Rabbits who get two copies are called peanuts and do not survive. So, essentially, 1/3 of all dwarf breed rabbits (holland lops are in the same category) will be false dwarfs, but there’s nothing wrong with that! It definitely doesn’t mean they aren’t purebred, it’s just how the dwarfing gene works.
It’s also possible that her ears are longer because she’s just not bred quite to standard. Also no big deal! Not every rabbit is going to look exactly like their breed standard, but we love them for all of their variety.

Wow, that’s really good to know, I had no idea!
