So as of two days ago my husband thought it was a good idea to bring home a rabbit as a birthday gift to me. I was reluctant but he kind of grew on me. I dont know much about rabbits or owning one for that matter. So any advice would be greatly appreciated. What I do know is that supposedly hes a a male and three years old (he got him from a coworker of his). I noticed he has a fairly big dewlap ans from what I read it is more of a female thing so wondering if it is a male after all or if it could possibly be a female. I’m also curious as to what type of breed it can be. I’m assuming some kind of lop breed because the ears are down, but I’m not sure. Any advice would help.

Welcome to Binky Bunny! I can’t see your pic, gonna try to get someone to help you with that, but I can tell you that here on this website, in the “BUNNY INFO” section, you will find all the basic info you need to get started in bunny parenting.

As for dewlaps, it is usually more prominent on females but males can have them too if they are overweight. Bunnies are very easy to sex incorrectly, especially when young (we hear of even vets getting it wrong sometimes) so it’s a possibility bun is a female and was just wrongly sexed. I suggest a vet check to confirm sex as if bun is a “she” you’ll want to consider spaying her. Reproductive cancer rates in unspayed females are extremely high. Spaying/neutering can also remedy some unwanted behaviours.

I’m not sure why the pic isn’t showing cause its showing through my end. He has long ears that hang to the side. And is black and white with dark brown eyes. He doesn’t seem to be overweight although I dont know. He actually feels really boney in his back. Just seems to have a huge dewlap as I had mentioned earlier. I have been feeding him carrots and romaine lettuce the last two days and as of yesterday started him on Menu rabbit food. I was reading that Timothy grass hay is 80% of what they should be eating. How much Timothy grass, rabbit food and veggies should I be feeding per day? He doesnt seek to be drinking much water although hes been eating alot of lettuce which contains water.

It’s showing now because I fixed it.

Does he have curly whiskers? His fur almost looks plush in the photo. If his fur is short and plush, then I’d say he’s a rex/mini lop cross. The broken gene is in lots of breeds so the black and white pattern doesn’t mean much.

Here are the recommended feeding guidelines: https://binkybunny.com/BUNNYINFO/tabid/53/CategoryID/2/PID/940/Default.aspx

Alright thank you so much. And yes his fur seems very plush . His whiskers aren’t curly I wouldnt say but don’t seem to be straight either. Lind of flare out to the sides if that makes sense. His name is Panda

I’d also suggest against the Menu food. The analysis isn’t very good, and the extras in it can cause him to become overweight and selectively eat. Good brands of bunny food are Oxbow, Burgess, and Manna.
