OK.  Abby has decided she doesn’t want to stay in her room at night when we are sleeping and when we have to leave to do things.  I have a standard sized baby gate in the doorway.  She now jumps it!  I have been putting 2 tall dining chair in front of it.  This morning I didn’t let her out right away because I was leaving for therapy and she tried to push the chairs from above the baby gate.    I don’t want her to try and jump it and hurt herself because she would smack into the chairs.  Any ideas on what I can put in the dorrway to her room to keep her in?

Could you hang one of those beaded curtains? Not the prettiest thing neccesarily, but it would allow you to still see in or walk in, but maybe be enough of a barrier to her. I also know people who have simply purchase screen doors and put them in doorways to block off rooms for animals.

What about just closing the door when you aren’t home. Does it have a door?

No there is no door for it and seeing that she is determined enough to try and push the chairs away from over the top of the baby gate I don’t think the beads would phase her. She doesn’t seem to spook at noises very much. I also thought about a screen door but she was digging at the baby gate today when she wanted out and it would take her no time to tear a hole in a screen.

You could put hardware clothe over the screen?

That would be a thought. As long as I didn’t have to attach the door. It needs to be able to be removed because it would swing out into our dining area and hit the table and be in the way. I’d also have to make sure that I could get the mesh smooth enough at the cut end that my girls wouldn’t get hurt on it.
She’s just so determined to be with us. She never jumped her pen when she was at the rescue. Little stinker. =)

What about an accordion door? Like the kind that goes on a closet.

here’s a page full of them:
http://www.homedepot.com/Doors-Windows-Doors-Interior-Doors-Accordion-Doors/h_d1/N-5yc1vZaqcb/h_d2/Navigation?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053

They aren’t the prettiest things in the world, but it wouldn’t swing either out into the dining room, or in to the bunny room. Also, they are much easier to hang than traditional doors.

Yes, I was thinking something similar.^ Someone posted a pic of a baby gate that opened like a sliding door. Maybe a taller version? Or could you install a cavity door?

I hope Abby is not a climber… Oh the joys of having a rabbit in the house again.

I just love having her here! Even when she is a stinker. I was hopeful to find a way to not have to spend so much money. I figured out a way to rig up something with nic grids. If that doesn’t work I might go by another gate identical to the one I have and stack them. Thanks for the ideas. Hopefully I can afford a taller more permanent baby gate soon.

Does the dining room have a door? If it does… you may want to consider letting her have the run of the dining room too

Our house is an open concept house. So our kitchen, dining room and living room are all connected with no doorways.

The only way I can keep Griffin from going back downstairs into the family room during free time is to use 4ft tall x pen panels to block the top of the staircase. Otherwise he just wants to go back downstairs and annoy Cotton and start a poo and pee war. I have 4 panels that I spread out so they stand upright on their own- then when I don’t want it blocked- I fold them up and lean them against the wall.

^^^That’s another thought… when you leave, you could place an xpen in a semi-circle extending into the dining room a little bit. This would allow light and provide a few more feet of space so she doesn’t feel as “closed-off”.

I can’t afford an x pen either especially since our hot water heater decided to leak all over our basement last night and it looks like we’re going to need a new one. (Sigh) For now I ended up getting another baby like the one I already have and I put one on top of the other.
