Last night, my son and my boyfriend brought home a new cage for Happy. This thing is huge! It’s a little over 3 ft long x 2 ft wide. The cage we have been using is just over 2ft long x 18″ wide. It’s a big difference. I want Happy to have the biggest cage possible, and have plenty of space, even though she is out for much of the day, but there is an issue with the new large cage. We have a rather small aparment, and I don’t know where to put it. The guys had planned to put it up on a shelf in the dining room that is connected to the living room. The cage would fit nicely there, but if it’s on a shelf, how will we let happy out on his own? The only things I could think of, were to lift the cage to the ground each time, which sounds like a pain in the butt, or to construct a ramp of some type, which makes me nervous, because I wouldn’t want Happy to ever fall. We have a large playpen coming too. Happy is going to have plenty of spaces of her own! Any thoughts on how we might be able to let Happy come down off a shelf on her own safely? Are there bunny safe ramps for sale any place? Can rabbits use those pet stairs that you can get for dogs? She has no trouble getting on and off the couch, so maybe I am worrying too much. Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated.

Beyond the height issue, I was just wondering what are some of the best things to put in a bunny’s cage? Right now, in the small one, I have a corner litter box, which she always manages to get loose and spill, a small food dish, which she also spills, a large water bottle, a flat cushion cat bed, a hanging hay toy, a hanging toy with a bell, a small box for a hide, which she lays on top of, but not inside, a few wooden chew toys, and a small chunk of himalayan salt that was a hanging salt lick, until she chewed it off the cord. I was thinking of ordering her something different for a hide. I saw some really cute soft cube hides online I was thinking of trying out, and maybe some type of basket as well. I’m not sure if I should put a lot of things in there to keep her busy, or leave more open space for her so she won’t feel cramped. I always keep some Timothy hay on the floor for her too. Is that fine, or should I get something special to keep the hay in? Any suggestions are welcome. I would love to hear what other people like to keep in their bunny cages.

I put a pinecone in m rabbits cage and he killed it so you could put a DRY pine cone in with NO pesticide in the tree it came from or on the cone. Also I think pet stairs would work lovely but I’ve never used them for my rabbit. And since her food dish keeps spilling, maybe you could get a heavier, hard to pick up one, if it becomes a bit of a problem.

I wouldn’t put a cushion in a bunnies cage, bunny may eat it, a small hard plastic dog bed is better with paper in, you could use a cardboard box if you don’t want to buy a new bed an xpen a playpen which you can put bunny in during the day, you can even attach another pen to make it bigger and throw in some old baby blankets or blankets from a secondhand shop, its surprising what you can find in those shops, you could ask them if they get any baby blankets that are not good enough for a baby with a little rip in to save you some, you could stitch them up or fold them over.
