I’ve currently got a box that I’ve filed with some newspaper and hide some dried herbs in, which he seems to like. But I need some inspiration for what else I could do so he can do some digging that won’t create too much of a mess in my flat. If I have a box with hay he’ll probably think it’s the litter box so I’m all out of ideas.

I have my hay in the litter box and if they pee on it, its honestly not a big deal. Asriel loves to dig and chew, but Bombur could just lay around all day and be content. If I put enough hay in the litter box he loves to burrow around in it and make himself cozy. I also have blankets and hay mats everywhere for him to dig and burrow in.

Shredded cardboard? It can be purchased in large bags or even a bale.
I know I couldn’t use it for mine as they would100% pee on it.

I’ve been keen to try a fine pebble or gravel. Something like smooth river stones but smaller.
