that is her cage now I’d like to add another layer too the top any ideas how? can I buy parts to do this i’m on the parts site but I dont see any of this.
Moving to Habitat – that’s the best place for this for answers.
Bunnies really need their space to be out, not up. Could you attach a pen to the front for extra space?![]()
X-pen or use NIC grids to make panels. I’m adding to Lola’s pen and wanted some NIC grids; couldn’t find them at Walmart, Lowe’s, or Menard’s, but I found them at Kmart–about $20 for one box (I think there are 17 panels, and they’re the smaller spacing so good for bunnies).

I agree with LongEaredLions, additional levels are nice, but expanding out will do more for her exercise.
I agree with the others on adding play area
with an x-pen. No problem at all with condos either — I’m getting
ready to build a giant condo with attached play area soon (already have one
condo).
If you’re planning to add to the top of the cage in the picture, I would definitely suggest
contacting the manufacturer to see what they recommend since you may be
affecting the structural integrity of the cage. Take a look
at the NIC condos online too — some are amazing and can be made to fit right in
with your furniture!
Nothing wrong with up but, bunnies need out more than up. Up doesn’t give them much room to binky, race around or splay out and relax, out gives them all of that. Even if your bunny needs to be in that cage as it is when you can’t supervise, that’s okay as long as he has plenty of room to do his bunny thing when you can supervise him.
I’d look at wire shelving and the other things mentioned here to make a larger play area, and a ramp down from that cage, if it’s on a stand like in the picture. Even if he can only be in the big area when you are home to keep an eye on him, that would be better than going up.

I did a little searching and found this recent thread… On page 2, caudex posted a great picture of her set-up. It’s the best of both worlds: “up” to satisfy the need to jump, but there is also a pen for horizontal space… 🙂
thanks everyone. She is doing great sorry to get back to you so late. However. I am still considering buying her the extention But I only want to use it when im around and supervising her just incase she happen to get out for some odd reason.

Definitely would be best to have her in a very large x-pen, or to block of a portion of a room with some sort of fencing or x-pen so that she has lots of room to stretch her legs out and get a lot of exercise. That cage you have now is fine for her to sleep in at night, but it’s too small as you know for her to live in all the time. I definitely support the idea of you getting a pen for her to be in whilst supervised. c:
I don’t think you can build on top of that cage. Also it would be difficult to build around this particular cage because it’s not on the ground – how would bunny get up and down?
I think you should just do an x-pen and get rid of the cage unless you can bring it down to ground level.
Could you please send me a few good examples of the x pen I have never heard of them and I need to know what I need to get . Is there a good link you could send me please ?
Nevermind I feel like a dootz I know what you guys are talking about now. but I still need details as to what flooring to put under it that will last a while and is in expensive because I currently have a cartpetted room

Yep!
There are actually a lot of great tutorials and examples of x-pens and set-ups on YouTube, and if you Google Image search “x-pen rabbit” you can find a lot of other examples, too. As for where to get the pens, I got mine (42″, Midwest brand) from Chewy.com for $50. They often have great sales on their stuff. You’ll want to make sure, if you do end up getting an x-pen, that it’s at least 36″ high.
MidlandHardware.com is a great site for really inexpensive materials that can be used as safe flooring for these habitats. Safe flooring options include: cardboard (really hard to clean though), cotton towels, linoleum sheet/tiles, vinyl sheet/tiles, laminate hardwood (this is what I use), actual hardwood, ceramic tiles, and low-ply carpet. You can combine these, too, and include things like small cotton towels and seagrass mats for flooring variety. You’ll just want to make sure it’s something the bunny can’t chew and ingest too much of, and if they can, it should be as safe as possible for them. The smooth floorings like tiles and hardwood and vinyl or linoleum are easiest to clean, and I personally recommend them, though it’s best to supplement this with softer things like towels and seagrass mats for the sake of their feet.
Flooring can be extremely cheap. I got my laminate hardwood panels for $15 on LumberLiquidators.com. But if you don’t want to do any online shopping, most of these substrates can be found at your local hardware store.
