        Hi-

Buttercup and Scull (both girls) got spayed 2 1/2 weeks ago.  Since then they are WAY more hyper, especially with the scratching and chewing.  I’ve even seen humping!! I let them out for hours every day and they get tons of exercise.  I also have tons of bunny things for them to chew on but they insist on scratching and chewing away at my furniture.  They’ve chewed holes in my upholstery!  I’m using a spray bottle to deter them but M’GOSH they are acting like they are on speed or something!  I thought spaying was supposed to calm them down a bit.  They are also chewing away at their hutch so voraciously that I’m afraid they’ll chew right through and it’ll fall apart!  They have a two storey wooden hutch.

Advice anyone?  Are they just having some sort of post-altering hormonal surge before they calm down.  They’re so much more hyper than they were before they were altered!

        Thank you!!!!

        Karen

I believe the rest of the hormones are coming out.
Mocha is correct, the hormones will calm down about after a month.

Have you tried bitter apple spray? Sometimes it doesn’t deter rabbits. In my experience, really smelly perfume does the trick. Once smelt, bunny will run away, foot flicking.

For some rabbits, destructive behaviors have as much to do with age as they do with hormones. If they were just spayed, I’m assuming they’re about 6-7 months. It’s possible they will still be a handful until 12-18 months. Some rabbits are always destructive tho. Bunny-proof very well and supervise as necessary.

Thanks for the advice everyone! I have tried bitter apple spray and they loved it. I’ve even tried lemon juice and chili powder! I’ve got my home pretty well bunny proofed…the upholstery destroying is a new thing. I got a spray bottle and spray water and say down and they get down. Now I just have to hold the spray bottle or even just say “down” and they get down. At least they’re learning!
