› FORUM › HOUSE RABBIT Q & A › I thought he was neutered…
Let me start off by saying that I consider myself to be a pretty bright person.
Yesterday when I saw Rex at the shelter I checked him to see if he was a boy or a girl. I saw a penis but I didn’t see any testicles. They would be pretty hard to miss and his fur is very short.
I can see why he was taken to the shelter. He sprays. He smells. And today I swear there are testicles where there weren’t any yesterday. They’re close to his body and look kind of half way shrively. What is this??? They don’t look ANYTHING like other male rabbits I’ve seen, though I will admit I haven’t spent a lot of time checking out rabbit testicles. I just don’t see how I could have NOT seen them when I was specifically looking for them yesterday.
He’s still very snuggly. My 10 year old carried him around today and he at that up. The poor thing didn’t seem to know what to do when I let him out of his cage.
I guess I will be scheduling a neuter ASAP.
Have you taken him to the vet yet for a real check-up? He may need his anal glands cleaned if he is stinky. A lovely monthly chore. Sounds like he is not neutered but a good rabbit savvy vet should be able to confirm this. The spraying should stop after he is neutered. Actually I haven’t heard anyone complain about spraying. That would be awful. Hang in there!
I just got him yesterday afternoon. I’m going to try to get an appointment for the end of the week, my boss is on vacation so I can’t take any time off until he gets back.
oh, well look at this in a postive way at least now you know that he isnt neutered so you know why he has been peeing on you and you know how to stop it! Are you still glad you took him home? I think his scent glands may be to do with his smell, sure sounds like it. Keep us posted!
Oh yeah. I’m still glad we brought him home. I love him as much as I love the bunny boys already. I now have three bunnies who seek out the people and like to be held and petted. I don’t know if the babies will stay that way but I’m hoping Rex will since he’s older.
My plan is to bond Rex and Thumper. So far Thumper is still very skittish and likes to be left alone. I don’t know if she likes other rabbits. I don’t even know if Rex likes other rabbits…I’m not letting him meet anyone for the next couple of weeks or so. And I’m glad I decided to keep him separate and not intro him to Thumper right away…I don’t think she’s fixed either and I most definitely don’t want babies!
I saw someone say they throught their boy might be pulling his testicles up…can they do that? I will feel a lot less dumb if they can…lol
You know what-recent neuters I’ve seen at the HS, it’s the droopy skin that looks like testicles but the testes are gone.
Did the rescue say he was neutered? It could be loose skin? And yes they can suck them in. ![]()
Some male rabbits “suck” up their testicles but usually in a rex it seems pretty obvious because their fur is so short. But he is a rex or did you just rename him Rex?
The shelter said he’s a dutch. I named him Rex after the hamster in the Stephanie Plum books…keeping up with my theme. :0)
His fur is REALLY short. And it feels like velvet. I’ve never met a rabbit that I know is a rex so I don’t know if they got his breed wrong (because that hardly EVER happens ::eyeroll:
or if he’s just softer than your average dutch bunny.
I was going to take some pictures of his “stuff” but I’m not home right now AND his weiner likes to come out to visit A LOT and it’s gross looking and I don’t want to post that here…lol
Hmmm…does he have the dutch markings? Did they say they neutered him or he “came” neutered? Or was he recently neutered which could explain the shriveled look.
He’s solid black. They said he was un-neutered. He was dumped by his second owners so I don’t know where he came from originally. All I know is that I flipped him over at the shelter and poked around and applied a pretty good amount of pressure looking for testicles even after it was very obvious he’s a male. The man who helped me knew nothing about rabbits so he did the holding…but he agreed that there didn’t appear to be any bunny nuts.
I guess I’ll find out at the end of this week or the beginning of next week. Of all the times for my boss to be on vacation…when I actually need to take a day off for something. Gah.

He sure looks like a rex – not a dutch. Are his whiskers curly and not straight.
He probably isn’t neutered then.
Umm I really haven’t paid any attention to his whiskers. I’ve been so busy paying attention to his hind end that I’ve really not been looking much at his face…lol! Writing that makes me feel like a dirt old lady!
He was a little more skittish about being held yesterday but I think that may be because my daughter, who was holding him, felt a little nervous with a bunny she doesn’t know yet. When I hold him he doesn’t struggle much, just a little residual “up in the air” wriggle, and he burines his face in my neck. He will hang out in my arms all day long if I let him. He still doesn’t know what to do with out of cage time. When I put him on the floor he scurries over to where I’m sitting on the couch and hides behind my feet. He pokes his head out every now and then and sometimes he’ll paw at my pant leg for me to put him on my lap. I’m so in love with this rabbit.
If you remember check his whiskers. Also rexes are kind of “wrinkly” around their head area. His fur looks very short and velvety which makes me think of a rex but I cannot tell otherwise.
His eyes also look very round which is typical of the rexes I know.
His fur is really pretty and shiny too.
Yeah, quit looking at his hiney LOL.
keep us posted!
I’m thinking he’s definitely a rex…Hopefully it was a mislabelling that they called him a dutch because by no means is he a dutch!! I believe they can come in solid colors, but he’s sooo not built like one either, doesn’t sound like he has the attitude (well, has he forced you at gunpoint to make a three hundred dollar BB order? No? Then probably not a dutch) and he’s definitely not colored like one-they have markings like Maryann -markusdarks’ bunny, Sarita’s avatar, and my Kokanee…AND he definitely looks like a rex-probably mini rex!
