My sister, who has two sons (12 and 10), is interested in adopting a rabbit (or a pair of rabbits). I had a long colloquy with her on text about it today and sent her several links, in fact, I’ll be talking about it more with her this weekend since I’m going down to South Carolina for a major family event. (Unfortunately, Panda and Fernando won’t be able to attend; the places we have reservations at don’t allow pets and it’s close to an 11-hour drive one way, so I boarded them with Friends of Rabbits for the weekend.)

Anyway, my sister lives in the suburbs of Charlotte, North Carolina. I looked for rabbit rescues in the Charlotte area but for some reason the closest I could find was Triangle Rabbits a couple of hours away in the “Research Triangle” area. Anyone know a good place for rabbit adoptions in metropolitan Charlotte or nearby?

Charlotte-Mecklinburg Animal Care and Control, in Charlotte, usually has rabbits. They only have two right now, but they often have several. I adopted a rabbit from there years ago. You can see their rabbits for adoption on petharbor.com or petfinder.com.

I know of the names of at least 4 other rescues in NC besides Triangle Rabbits, but none of them are that close to Charlotte. There might be some shelters that have rabbits that are closer to Charlotte. You may have just been searching for rabbit rescues, but if you go to petfinder.com, you may find some nearby shelters/humane societies that have rabbits.

I’m in Boston, so I don’t know much about shelters in that area. I just wanted to say I think it’s awesome that you’re teaching your sister and her children about proper bunny care so that they can rescue some

Well, right now, I think my sister is going to take it slow. She’s concerned about the financial side – I went into some detail with her about the monthly costs – and I also told her to discuss it with my nephews and make sure that they really do want a rabbit, or rabbits, and that they understand the commitment involved. That being said, they’re planning to go around to some places and make the acquaintances of various bunnies; so I’ll pass on the information about Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Care and Control.

I wish I had as good an influence. My partner’s cousins (kids) got rabbits shortly after we did, and they are shoved in a hutch in the garden. One gets walked on a leash outside and was even pushed down a slide!!! (saw the video of it!)
