Today i rescued a rabbit, she is absolutely terrified of everything. She had been used for breeding and kept in urine soaked filth.

When i got her home i checked her over and she has a scab on her shoulder and rump, a small lump on her lip, one side of her nose is weirdly protruding and her private area is swollen and red. I know this all sounds bad but its definitely NOT myxomatosis.. I thought perhaps syphilis with her being a breeding rabbit.. But given the other bite wounds i’m wondering if she’s been fighting?

I’m going to try and get a photo of her private area tomorrow, it looks like there might be a bite wound but it’s swollen so it’s hard to tell for sure. I’ve bathed it with salt water and given her anti biotics in case there’s an infection.

I’m not really sure why i’m posting this, maybe for some advice? Other than “see a vet” which i’m going to do.

Poor bunny! Thank you for rescuing her. I would definitely suspect fighting if she was used for breeding. That sounds like awful living conditions and being that she has never been to a vet, who knows what problems she could have. I’m not entirely familiar with rabbit syphilis though.

Do you suspect she may be pregnant?

Oh geez. Thank you so much for saving that poor girl… Please keep us posted with what the vet says. I wonder if she is pregnant… can you tell us how you came across her?

I’m praying she is not pregnant but there is always a possibility that she is

Her ‘owner’ put up an advert with pictures of her saying she was free to anyone who wanted her. The pictures clearly showed all the filth she was living in and i knew if i didn’t do something i’d have it playing on my conscience forever. So i went over and collected her this afternoon.

Did the owner have other rabbits – did he/she say she was a breeder? Did they give you any information?

The owner said they had bred that rabbit several times, and they had other rabbits but wouldn’t say much else.

Sounds like an unfortunate vicious cycle and it wouldn’t surprise me if you see more rabbits on the website you saw her advertised on giving another rabbit away. Very sad. I think it’s suspicious they would not divulge more information.

Let us know what the vet says.

Would you consider an e-spay if it was determined she was healthy enough for surgery?

                            Yes!

Oh good. Some people don’t like the idea of it (understandably) but she really doesn’t need to be nursing a new litter. She needs to get healthy herself. I saw her pic on the other thread, she is beautiful!

That;s great that you rescued her.
The breeder sounds suspicious, or at least negligent. Maybe you could call animal control and have them check out the situation. They may all be living in filth and have injuries.

Glad you posted. Would like to see pix of her.

Oh…I’m sorry, but I am confused. This isn’t the same rabbit from your post in December….https://binkybunny.com/tabid/54/afv/topic/aff/2/aft/108341/Default.aspx

Just clarifying what’s going on before I respond here
