Hi guys. Tomorrow is the big day! My husband and I are adding a rabbit to our family. We picked him out last week. He is a 9 week brown holland lop. We have been doing our research and it says its best to have two bunnies together. We also fell in love with an older 14 week lion head. He’s also male and a 9 week dwarf lion head mix who I think is also male we aren’t sure yet. What would be the best option??? We are definitely neutering our bunnies. We really need help with this decision before tomorrow. We have two cages already but I would like to have a bonded pair who can eventually be housed in the same cage. (They’ll be mostly cage less they’re only using it to sleep or if we have to step out)

Well normally it is best to let your rabbit chose their own partner once they are altered.

It would be fine to just have one to start out with since it’s your first rabbit – many people have only one rabbit and that rabbit is just fine with their human companions.

Bonding can be very stressful for owners too.

Also normally the easiest bonds are male/females although that same gender bonds are definitely possible.

I think a big part of is how much time will your bunny have to spend alone? If both you and your DH work full time outside the home and no one else is around during the day, bunny will be lonely. However, if someone in the house works from home, is part time, you work opposite shifts, someone is retired, etc so there is often a human about to be petted by and snuggle up to one bunny will be perfectly happy.

An option might be to get the first bunny, and wait a little while after he is settles from his neuter. The when it has been a little while, you could go to a shelter and have him pick out his bunny friend.
