I’ve read through this forum so many times and now I can’t believe I’m posting here like this. My bunny, Storm passed away yesterday after having surgery for a blockage in her stomach. The vet said it seemed to be a mass of fur that she had swallowed twice. They were stitching her up after removing the fur and her heart gave out and they brought her back twice but couldn’t the third time. I feel so lost and cheated that she’s gone so suddenly. She was only four and I feel like the worst owner.
She was her usual happy self on Sunday and then I noticed on Sunday night she wasn’t interested in food and was pushing her stomach into the floor so I suspected she might have stasis and rushed her to the emergency vet. They said her stomach wasn’t emptying so it must be a blockage. I had cuddles with her before she left but I hate that she died in a place she hated without me there. I keep blaming myself, thinking I should have brushed her more or something. She was an amazing bunny.

I’m so sorry for your loss.

Unfortunately bunnies are prone to stomach problems, and often there’s nothing you can do. I don’t know if it will make you feel better, but a few posts above yours someone lost their bunny in a similar circumstance, despite brushing everyday. As bunnies are such obsessive self-cleaners it’s really really hard to completely stop them from ingesting fur.

She would have been anaesthetised when she died, so she wouldn’t have known you weren’t there. You were doing your absolute best to save her. I’m sure she had a very happy 4 years with you, and it sounds like you did everything right. Try not to beat yourself up, you obviously loved her very much and you did everything that you could.

My beloved bunny Sirius had an overnight stay at the vet after a gut blockage. They called me at 6am and said they had to put him to sleep immediately because he was suffering, and there was no time for me to get there. I beat myself up over it for a long time, and it still makes me cry, but you have to focus on the happy life that they had when they were with you.

Yes the vet said it was incredibly common, unfortunately. Thank you for your kind words, it means a lot. I’m sorry to hear you went through a similar experience with your bun as well. They are such special animals and Storm has definitely left a void in my life.
