all these problems started to happen ever since i built him a new cage out of nic cubes. he never did this before!!!!

        problem #1

Cookie seems to be eating his litter box pellets during the day. and i am not sure if it is healthy for him. the bag says if consumed the pellets will break down into its original fibrous components and pass h through his digestive system.

        problem #2

it looks like he is also digging in his litter box. so when ever i come home. . . . i see this HUGE mess he made!!!!! pellets are litterally EVERYWHERE!!!!!! but the thing is i can’t fit a covered cat litter box. it is WAY too big to fit in his cage.

so i have no idea what to do. BTW he is neutered.

What brand of litter are you using and do you place a covering of hay over the litter? The hay will deter him. I would suggest getting some hardware cloth (small wire that is in a waffle, square pattern) to imbed in the litter, then pile the hay on. It should help with both problems. Since it is a new place, he probably is trying to scent the whole cage with eau de bunny or I know my two just do it when they are in a tiff as well, it really depends on his bunny personality. Does he have plenty of toys? Have you changed brands of litter, have you changed litter boxes? This may take some investigating and it may just be a matter of time before he gets settled in again.

I have two bunnies that are diggers – maybe you could try putting newspaper over the litter and then hay? That way when he’s digging he will get distracting by biting and chewing up the newspaper layer. Also, you might consider upgrading to a bigger cage so that you can get the covered litterbox in there, and Cookie can have some space to run around to get out his digging energy Also, the hardware cloth Scarlet Rose suggested might be a good long term solution for the digging.

No problem, he sounds like he’s digging and exploring his new digs. How is he doing now?

Why did you change him back? It sounds like he was trying to get used to his new digs. Are not going to change him to a new cage at all?

they do make very high sided  litterboxes that aren’t the cover type – you may consider one of them too

Trigger, the pet therapy bun, used to get litter everywhere.  I got rid of his old litterbox and put in a $ store dishpan.  I was able to wedge it in pretty tightly, so he wasn’t able to knock it over and dig all the litter out.  We also got him a cardboard tube, like the ones they use in cement construction, and filled it w/ balled up newspapers.  This allowed him to dig in a clean & tidy fashion.  Maybe you can use the nic cubes to build a connection b/t the 2 cages?  That might help him get used to the new cage so that you can transition him to the one that you made and likely fits in your house better (I too have similar issues—this is why I built the nic cage).  I used cheap bolt cutters (not real bolt cutters—cheaper ones) to cut through the old cage so I could build up w/ the new one.  Hope that made sense???
